About this video: Wondering how colorblindness works? In this video, Joseph J. Allen, OD, FAAO will explain how color vision works. Color blindness is more common than people often think, however, there are different types of colour blindness. This video will review the genetics of color vision deficiency, how the retina is affected by being colorblind and some eye diseases that can result in color vision changes. If you have had trouble seeing colors or if colourblindness runs in the family, this color vision video is for you.

I am one of the rare females with color deficiency. I found out as a teenager and my optometrist was almost giddy because he'd never seen a female case. My father was colorblind. My husband is not, but we just found out our 10 yr old son is just like me. I had the genetics wrong because I thought since my husband was not, our son wouldn't be either. Honestly it's kind of a bummer. I don't mind wearing mostly grey, but I can't pick a shade of lipstick. And I still use the same shade of blush my mom picked out for me when she first taught me how to wear makeup. Cover Girl better not stop making classic pink or I'm doomed.

I recently took a color blind test and the results showed that I had tritan color blindness, but I have never had a problem with differentiating between different colors and shades before.. So I was worried and took the test again and this time the results showed I had a normal vision. it all happened because the first time I forgot to turn off the night light feature so it was blocking all the blue light.

I had suspicions that I was colorblind but it was never super obvious. It wasn't until I was in my early 20's working in the produce department of a local grocery store. My boss had asked me to go over to the potato display and to just go through them and pick out any that were starting to turn green. This is when I learned that I had green color deficiency lol. After failing to spot the green potatoes several times, needless to say my boss never asked me to do that particular task again haha.

Hello. Sometimes I notice the imagine coming from one eye has a different "white balance" than the other. One is a bit colder, and the is warmer. It happens rarely. But I noticed it's more often when I wake up in the morning. Sometimes it's when I've had one eye covered while the other is either not covered or just closed and there's a powerful light source like the sun. I think it's something like the after image you have when you stare at a coloured wall, you just see the complementary colour when looking at a white surface. And when you have your eyes closed and there's a powerful light source you see red, and everything serms to be a bit greener when you open them. Could be something related to different kinds of light/shadow the eyes get exposed to? Or it's something else and the eyes just adapt during the day?

Back in my teens - 7th grade I think - my Eye Dr found that I had a color issue on top my my normal red/green deficiency (he also hated that everyone calls color problem - "blindness") and was "lucky" enough to get the XChrome contact lenses. I had the Redeye nickname for MANY years afterward. Started with the hard lenses and eventually moved to the gas permeable hard lenses. Eventually gave up on them in my early 30s for various reasons. Part of whihc was ---- I could not get used to NOT wearing glasses. I have had glasses since first grade when they were heavy glass - can't get used to air moving past my eyes.

Hi Dr. Allen, I know i have written you alot about my eye problems. I was hoping maybe for some suggestions from you , but i guess what more could you say than what is on your videos. When you wrote about the possibility of oil glands drying up on your eyelids that struck a cord with me, The last four days my eyes have been constantly watering, tearing up so badly i could barely see out of them. This is over and beyond, the eye drops every hour almost, warm compresses and a humidifier in the apt. Tonight i noticed a white bump on my upper eyelid right about where the crease is. Now i have seen these and studied about them before. Usually lately if i massage it with a warm compress i can see the oil release. So you can see that my oil is not moving thru the eyelid but getting pocketed. So now dont freak out, but i used a sharp clean needle and opened it up and it was not oil but a hard white round stone? knobby thing??? dont know what to call it besides it could be MILIA??? it would not come out of the skin and by working with it , it appeared that smaller ones popped up right at eyelashes. I did thoroughly cleaned it with filtered water and put a small amount of CBD oil on it to soothe and heal the spot. I tell you i am soooooo over dealing with these dry eyes. Its been almost 14yrs of them being really bad. I am going to try another Opthamologist, what should i exactly ask them ...when i am really wanting to know more about the Puntal Plugs. There is a very very good reason why i feel they would help that i will not go into to. But who else knows my eyes better than me?/ just seems that i cannot get any response or help from the 5 MALE macho drs. that i have seen already. Im trying a woman this time..... any suggestions on how to go about starting the conversation with her about this procedure?? Thank you so much. I know you are more than extremely busy but i would appreciate any help you could give me to finding a solution to make me and my eyes happier.

Is there a perfect (ideal) overlap of 3 cones? Much healthy variation? And if we had equal numbers of all cone types do we perceive colors largely by the contrast between them, or for example, if we had a single cone type be given color perception by the relative sensitivity to each wavelength?

Hey doc! Thanks for your Videos!
I have a question, but some background:
I have mild protanomaly (0.24 AQ) and need to pass some vision tests for a job. Glasses are allowed if they help me.
I need to especially pass the anomaloscope test (not Ishihara anymore) where two colors are preset and I just have to say if they are similar or not, judging by looking through a microscope.
I am not sure which glasses would help me with that because I cant "try" that test on my own with the glasses I already have here.
The EnChromas do not help me with Ishihara (already tried) but the red lens glasses from "LLC Color Blind" let me pass and read Ishihara. Do you think this is a good indicator for the anomaloscope test aswell?
    My question:
Which glasses or lenses do you think would help the most for differentiating two preset colors in the anomaloscope test? EnChroma, red lenses or something completely different?
Thank you for reading this and keep going with those vids :)

My departed father's 100th birthday was last month, and he was color blind. He had trouble telling if a pair of socks or a tie was brown or blue. Once he figured out I could tell them apart as a kid he'd bring two pairs and ask what colors they were. In elementary school when they first figured out he was colorblind, they told his parents it was due to some vitamin deficiency while his mom was pregnant. That diagnosis seemed plausible all these years until seeing this video. But I, nor my brother, nor any of my cousins are colorblind, so it must be a recessive thing.

Could be caused by a lot of things...uncorrected refractive error is the most likely possibility, but I know what you are talking about. If the sign is LED, these can give a fuzzy light appearance too. Ultimately, you may need to ask your local eye doc regarding your eyes and if there are other possible causes.

Request= put up something inspiring about diabetic retinopathy. Talk about how much a person can do to prevent it from getting worse etc...Many seem to think that it's inevitable that it will get worse. And I don't think injections in the eyes is very appealing to most people. Isn't a strict diet/exercise/weight loss program a better alternative (for the type 2's at least). I know that type 1 is a very different situation.

Hey can you make a video on how to flush your eyes at home in an emergency...I got a chemical in my eye and I thought I flushed right but my eye got progressively worse, red stinging, swollen eyelids, tearing like crazy...In the morning I went to the urgent orphalm clinc, and they hooked me up with a morgan lens. Many ph checks and it took 3 liters of saline for my eye ph get back to norma. The burning sensation stopped. Today doc said the eye improved, no more tearing or mucus, eyelids back to normal...Just my eye still red and there's some swelling.I have to go back in 3 days to check on progress.

I have a question (viewers can answer too). Should I wear glasses when I’m not wearing contacts? On weekends at home I have to wear glasses but am I allowed to just not wear anything? Does contacts lower my vision? My parents want me too wear glasses when I’m not wearing contacts because I’ll strain more, but I’m really not. Thanks.

This is ultimately a question for your eye doctor, as they know your eyes and prescription. For people adults who have stopped growing, I would oftentimes say it is up to them, obviously people who see better with glasses should consider wearing them. I personally think if someone is in school or still developing at a younger age then having clearer eyesight can influence learning and brain development.

But if someone asks what’s this color then my answer is‘I don’t know’ then it makes them even more curious about d color blindness and my answers r kinda unclear

I have a friend and he's 100% Asian. However, he has a very different eye color than most Asians. Normally, most of Asians having brown, orange and black eyes color, but my friend has a green eyes color. Is it due to his previous ancestors or some weird disease?

So I'm color deficient and my wife is not a carrier. Does that mean my son's have no chance of having it? And daughters have no chance of carrying it?

If that is so, then your sons would have no chance but your daughters would be carriers.
