I'm Canadian, Bulgarian descent. I haven't been to Sofia in 15 years and will have to go in the coming months. You're about 1.5 km from my mother's ancestral home in Oborishte so seeing you walk the area and go to the malls was like a refresher course for me. Most helpful. I'm looking forward to more of your videos. Wishing you all the best.
Alina,I have seen many of your videos from different parts of the world but never watched any of Bulgaria and was curious of what I was going to discover. At first,I felt that it had the Eastern European look, but was more impressed when you hit the city proper coupled up with the Malls and the street level shops. The streets and train station aren't crowded and looks quite safe to me and wow, the phone plan is such a great deal! Looking forward to learn more about Sofia, Bulgaria!
Its a safe yes for sure. But Sofia at all is not so nice place to live, there is other little more small cities that have everything and even better in prices plus less crowd than Sofia and better environment for kids. In Socialism before 1989 we sleep always on unlocked front door, there was not criminal activity at all. There was no drugs,no homelessness, every single man or woman had a job, the medicine was totally free plus the schools too. At all comunism specially in Bulgaria was very different from other Socialism countries. Our dictator was a simple man from our nation and he really cared for all of us. Of course there is always people who will not like it. I dont understand and never will why. We had more than 3000 factories in all economic different areas. Bulgaria was 27 strongest economy in whole world. Not a single penny debt to another countries. Even only if take rhat there was no drugs and no homelessness is enough to understand what beautiful place was Bulgaria.

My friend Alina glad that you arrived safely to Sofia Bulgaria. Glad to see that you are settling in nicely and hope everything goes well with you. Looking forward to your next live video from Bulgaria. Stay safe and warm.
My wife and I will be moving to Sofia in March. We are excited to learn about that beautiful country and its culture. A lot of thanks Alina for showing us a bit of Sofia. We'll see all the videos that you upload. Great content!! From Uruguay 🇺🇾
Hi Alina you need to get to know the DM store. All kinds of shampoo and conditioner items are available there. There is one in the building at the very beginning of your video where the BIlla store is located. It is at the very entrance to the left. Just like you I thought that the older buildings are very quiet in Sofia. Not true. It all depends on who your neighbors are. I can hear the person living above me and I live in a 100 year old building. The good news is it is not a family with little children running around. Good luck with the apartment search!
Sugestions sugestions hymmmmmmmm !!! YES !!! I have one: Check out Ryanair - they fly from Sofia to Wroclaw, Poland :) Ideal for a spring trip (and if you book early its really cheap!)
Hoi, Alina, super interesting to follow. Well done. You know, been several times to Bulgaria, Sofia, the Rila Monastery, Plewen, Russe, Burgas. Like it. Lot´s of more Western European companie´s making good money there!. Take care and Greetings, Markus
Happy New Year Alina. Another great video. Wondering if you have been to cities like Wroclaw/Poznan in Poland or Timisoara in Romania. All these cities I think are underrated and definitely worth a visit.
4:13 Wow, I'm not going to lie, This city is really beautiful, I love this city and The weather is great. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us, Enjoy your day.
Welcome to Bulgaria! Glad to see you arrived save. About internet speeds A1 is the international leader and they are Bulgarian based so I recommend checking them out. I have a gigabit (1000 mbps) internet via sim card and a router from them (as I live up in the mountains) and I pay less than the deal you got.
17:35 I highy suggest paying for the public transport with your bank card or phone (apple/google pay) at the gates of the subway or the machines inside tram/bus/trolley, the price is the same - 1,60 leva for the ride, but if you use it for a third time during the day, it will only charge you 0,80 leva (up to 4,00 leva total for the day) and you will have a day pass and can use all public transport for this day without paying anymore. Also on that note if you plan using it often, the year pass is 365 leva - so a lev per day for all transport :)

Hi Alina, I know the feeling, and now understand why you made the move to Sofia, Bulgaria dear. I can tell you that I had to move out of Miami, which had become my second hometown on this earth, due to the unbelievable high cost of living. I ended paying 60 USD for a regular lunch, with "the allure" of a carbonated water glass and a cup of wine at my local restaurant up in the Miami Design Distric area back in 2015. So all I have to say is enjoy yourself your new neighborhood, which it seems to me is not bad at all, my best wishes to you from Colombia beauty, rgs
Make sure you visit the second biggest city called Plovdiv! And near Plovdiv there is a beautiful place called Bachkovo monastery that you deff need to go and see . There is plenty to do in Plovdiv so make sure you alocate at least couple of days for all the museums and the amazing city centre and a place called Kapana which you could visit at night and you will be amazed what you will find out there ! Welcome to Bulgaria ;)
The best supermarket chain in Sofia is Фантастико, the cheapest one - Kaufland. Sofia is particularly depressing in winter - fogs, smog, no street cafes, etc. It is as if someone pours buckets of grey matter over the city and then in April suddenly everything is out - colours, people, life. Sofianities spend January to March on ski and so you could too, Alina. Borovetz is just an hour and a half away.
I would love it then, most likely. Germany imprinted me as a child, so even at 50, I feel like winter NEEDS to be gray, cold, and damp for me to enjoy it. It's the battery recharge time of year.
The Sofia climate is a little bit different from the rest of the country (colder and snowier). I assume you recorded the video in late December, when it was foggy in Sofia, but if you left the city, you would see the fog disappear.
Congratulations, it was a long process, but you made it!!! I loved watching this video, and thought that I would like living in Bulgaria. I really like the public transportation system. That is a real plus. The people seem very helpful. I look forward to seeing more!!! 🇧🇬
Most malls in Sofia are in the city proper. It's very easy to get in and out. You don't need to drive to one. And this mall is not in the best shape actually. The rest of them are better.
In fact Централни хали Central Halls is a special Kaufland store once Kaufland bought it because the original market was sold. So when it comes to Central Halls - think for it as Kaufland special store. :) About places to visit (near Sofia) - if you are keen on monasteries - there are plenty around Sofia. Some of them are in good "fit", for orher - their best days are currently over. With public traffic buses - 61, 63, 66 you can go to Vitosha mountain. You may plan short trip to Pancharevo lake where you could make a walk. Also - you may go to Borovets, where you could skiing or snowbording. On many places there are hot springs open or closed pools like this one in small towns of Sapareva Banya or Velingrad. Also in villages like Varvara or Banya. FYI: Velingrad is not so cheap as resort, oftenly here in Bulgaria we joke our-selves that Velingrad beats Dubai's prices several times... :D

You're doing great with the Bulgarian :) Love how happy you were for having that conversation and I can understand the feeling. Reminds me when I was in Tokyo and I learned how to ask for directions in Japanese and had asked for the metro station directions at the information Desk, haha. Don't want to be negative, but the fact that it was so quiet for you...might be just very good luck. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case. As a fellow one that is sensitive to noise, I'd strongly advice you when you search for long term place to live to ask who lives in the apartment above (especially) and if it's a young family with kids, refuse, even if it's the best deal in the world. I know kids are hard to be controlled but sadly, parents in Bulgaria don't even try and rarely teach their kids to be considerate.
San Stefano is one of my favorite small streets in Sofia. You should try that restaurant next to Coffee Fellows :) Also, most movies are subtitled, and the ones for children are usually dubbed.
Clever girl. Finally you came back to Eastern Europe. Happy new year. I follow you from the moment you were in Colombia and happened what was a horrible experience. I feel you got a lot of experience travelling and I like the way you describe the places you visit. Now you speak at least three or four languages?
Добре дошла! Welcome to my country, to my city.... and weirdly... to my mall :D. However, Mall of Sofia is not the place to go considering where is your current apartment (can't hide the neighborhood from the locals :P). If you want a big shopping center, I suggest visiting Serdika Mall next time. It is less than a ... actually... better not tell how close it is to your place (privacy first!), but it is quite close. And it is much bigger and more diverse in comparison to the one you visited. That said, you are in a neighborhood with a lot of small shops and places where you can get most of your daily needs. I'm sure you've figured that out since then. Anyhow... enjoy your life here, I hope you like it. I am looking forward to the future content :)
You will be just fine. My home city Sofia is very welcoming. Plenty of activity to do and enjoy all year long. Go and hit the slopes if you enjoy ski. The Vitosha mountain is right there. The Cinemas in Bulgaria are always in the original language/ voice with Bulgarian subs. PS - Beautiful Bulgarian accent you've got.
All the movies in cinema in Bulgaria are in English language with Bulgarian subtitles. You will see when come to good weather in Bulgaria one really good place and 1 million things to do there. Welcome to Bulgaria 🎉
The thing about Europe is that it's quite common for people to speak multiple languages. Most young people in Sofia speak at least decent English. You will get along just fine.
The weather looks somewhat similar here in Toronto during winter. At least you don't have to adjust. Sofia looks better now and I see similar franchise food chains there. You'll be at home. 😃
Welcome to Bulgaria and I hope you will enjoy your life in our beautiful country! Wish you all the best here and hope your new life will bring you lots of joy and happiness! ❤
As a fellow Bulgarian, I have to say you absolutely nailed ordering that cappuccino-like a true Bulgarian pro! 😊 I really admire your vibe and would love the chance to meet you someday. It would be amazing to snap a selfie together! Keep being awesome!
the grocery store looks very clean... and shopping cards are smaller than here... ohhh and I love mayonnaise there and ketchup much better than here in Canada.
Nothing really negative to say about Europe at all except maybe the graffiti. Most Eastern European countries have teams of artists that create murals to cover up graffiti. Usually, a nice mural prevents future dummies from tagging the structure. But Bulgaria is a gem overall. Lucky you
15:00 All the movies in the cinema are subtitled except the kid's ones which are dubbed. And of course the Bulgarian movies are in Bulgarian with no subtitles ;)
Pernik is a nice town, but I would not recommend it for a tourist, especially in the winter when everything looks more depressing. And the Krakra fortress would be very disappointing experience; the reconstruction of the walls looks extremely fake; it looks like something made from cardboard.
You should Check out the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway. It is not in Sofia but really scenic. I will also suggest not to buy single use ticket but use debit card instead because you can only get charged up to 4 leva which is the cost of daily card for all lines. Also if you mainly use public transit you can get yearly card which makes it even cheaper.

A very good job, Alina!❤❤❤❤
For cosmetics ypu could have saw DM at the mall
Welcome to your new country
Sofia is beautiful city
Bulgaria looks like a lovely place, overcast or not. It actually reminds me a little of Canada. You will fit in just fine!
More Bulgaria and Eastern Europe videos in the future please !!!! 🎉❤ you are my favorite travel blogger on the internet for the past 5 years
I would also like to escape from Canada. How would Bulgaria be for someone who only speaks English?
The thing about Europe is that it's quite common for people to speak multiple languages. Most young people in Sofia speak at least decent English. You will get along just fine.
So lovely!!!
For shampoos and cosmetics you need to find DM, that is your store.
Welcome to Bulgaria!
The weather looks somewhat similar here in Toronto during winter. At least you don't have to adjust. Sofia looks better now and I see similar franchise food chains there. You'll be at home. 😃
Very interesting to see Sofia. It's seems a wonderfull place to live. Enjoy ! 🙂
You guys in Bulgaria have a graffiti problem just like us in Romania. Other than that Sofia looks nice, even in the winter.
The list of problems is longer than this single video can suggest, heheh. Still I love Sofia
in warsaw pact countries house wall must withstand canon round ofc it's quiet
the grocery store looks very clean... and shopping cards are smaller than here... ohhh and I love mayonnaise there and ketchup much better than here in Canada.
Nothing really negative to say about Europe at all except maybe the graffiti. Most Eastern European countries have teams of artists that create murals to cover up graffiti. Usually, a nice mural prevents future dummies from tagging the structure. But Bulgaria is a gem overall. Lucky you
Well done Alina! You are doing so well! Please keep us updated more frequently as this is now 2 weeks old! Look forward to the next one soon😊😊
15:00 All the movies in the cinema are subtitled except the kid's ones which are dubbed. And of course the Bulgarian movies are in Bulgarian with no subtitles ;)
Go to Pernik a Town 30 km from Sofia. You can visit the ancien city forteresse Krakra and there is a mining galery museum unique in the country
Pernik is a nice town, but I would not recommend it for a tourist, especially in the winter when everything looks more depressing. And the Krakra fortress would be very disappointing experience; the reconstruction of the walls looks extremely fake; it looks like something made from cardboard.
So good to see you. Congratulations on your first day in Bulgaria. Have you heard about the devastation in Los Angeles?
Thank you and yes, absolutely tragic what has happened with the fires. I hope there will be insurance and government relief for everyone affected.
You should Check out the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway. It is not in Sofia but really scenic.
I will also suggest not to buy single use ticket but use debit card instead because you can only get charged up to 4 leva which is the cost of daily card for all lines. Also if you mainly use public transit you can get yearly card which makes it even cheaper.
the movies are subtitled unless they are for kids, animations
