- Wealthy socialite Lois Frazer wants a divorce from her husband, but he's not ready to let her go so easy. Suspecting that he intends to murder her, she calls Lieutenant Ed Cullen, with whom she's been having an affair, in an effort to save herself from her husband's wrath. When Ed arrives someone dies, but it's not Lois. With his lover's husband shot dead, Ed finds himself the ironic and dangerous position of being assigned a case that no one knows he actually witnessed. In addition to trying to control the investigation, Ed also has the misfortune of having his own younger brother, a new detective on the force, by his side every step of the way, eager to prove himself.

I'M A BIG FAN OF THESE TYPE OF OLD MOVIES THE CLOTHES, APT'S ,BUILDINGS,CARS,VIBE,ETC
Me, too. 👍
Ya no doubt
...I'm a big fan of these type of movies too! After watching this, I ran out and bought a trench coat.
I then sat down and read the history of the trench coat and that galvanized me to join the army.
When my hitch in the army was up I balked at re-enlisting, but I did continue wearing that trench coat with me to where ever I would go.
On my first visit to NYC, I made a stop on Clinton Ave.(Millinary Row) to see my good friend Mr. John. He made me a fetching fedora that I wear with my trench coat at all times.
The fedora only cost me $3.59...although it did require some assembly.
Same here! Such style and grace that dosen't exist in today's world.

They sure didn't smoke enough cigarettes, omg, in just about every scene, thruout the whole film.
Smoking was a sign of sophistication back then.
It was some what fashionable back in that era.
Thank You Timeless Classic Movies.👍
A Must See.
God Bless.❤️🙌
He knew what she was all along. Her husband realized it too late. She got away with murder. He was left holding a cigarette.
He was so cool at the end, lighting her cigarette, never saying a word. That look.
They don't make this kind of movie anymore. A shame a lot of the stuff we have in the cinema world .those were the days, a era gone by . Those of us who know the difference miss it. Thank u 4 bringing it back.
I haven’t set foot in a movie theater in nearly 20 years. The last time I went was to see a matinee of “Hollywoodland” and it cost just $5.00.
@carolynnewyork6919
Unfortunately tho, behind the scenes of filming these were as bad as the actual movies these days. Forced abortions and contracts, mistreatment...
How sad the women just used him, and he ended with nothing and in trouble for sticking up for her, smh.
I thought that it was just one woman and not multiple women. 🤔
THAT'S WHY SOMEONE, MADE UP THAT SAYING! "THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A FOOL, THAN AN OLD FOOL!"😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤❤ DOING OUT OF LUST AND SO CALLED LOVE!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😮😮😮😮😮😮

These old movies are really good.Good clean movie free of bad language etc. Thanks for the upload.
Boy have times change they think 3 hours is a long time
I hope he doesn't get caught up in the riots
@Randy White You might want to reconsider things when you get old enough to have children and they are exposed to unending filth.
Woman kills her husband & ropes the guy she's been cheating on him with, a respected police detective, no less, to cover up the crime. These movies created a world that was a cesspool of depravity and corruption (which is why I love them -- they're honest about the rottenness of society and the state of mankind). But people like you think they're all sweetness and light because people dress nicely and don't use swear words.
It's like someone watching newsreels of the Third Reich, and all they can talk about it is how clean the streets are, how well fed everyone looks, how respectfully the children behave LOL!
LOVE the black and whites! When real movies were made. And some of the titles are freakin' awesome!
I agree, wish l they’d make decent movies like this today. Great actors too.
EXCELLENT FLICK.
I enjoyed it thoroughly.
an excellent thriller film. Suspenseful and atmospheric scenarios. Thanks.
Love, Love, Love Lee J. Cobb His catalog of work is immense.
Just watched Cobb,James Stewart in room 777? Cobb is a actor I've started to see how underrated he was in my eyes....hea in ""The Left Hand of God" a really unique film with Humphrey Bogart!!! Beings up " great film ( Bogart) and others!! "" The Barefooted Contessa""!!!!not seen!!! Watch!!

Love the great Nash automobiles in this great thriller.
Great period for car design. The Nash Rambler Ambassador had absolutely gorgeous lines with the front/rear partial fender skirting, and side moulding from front to rear bumpers. I also loved the look of the external sun visor, as well. And whats not to love about Lois's car the '50 Nash Rambler convertible/landau coupe, i always loved the cars that proportionally could be going forwards or backwards. Guess that's why I had two vintage VW Beetles. I noted Ed drives a '50 Chevy Fleetline Coupe. Also, saw a '49 Caddy Fleetwood and a Studebaker on the street, i noticed that '49 Caddy because I was the proud owner of a '50 Caddy Model '62 for a number of years. 👍
Note to self: never wear high heels when climbing metal stairs in hide out; the closing seconds when her arm is linked with the prosecutor, she asks for a cigarette, 'light one for me will ya darling..." Just proves how important and vital nicotine was to superior policing in the 20th century...I rest my case.
She really flashed those eyes of hers at Lee J Cobb! They should have closed the gate behind themselves; leaving it open was an invitation to come in!
She was talking to her lawyer, offering him anything, not the prosecutor.
I liked it! ( In spite of terrible sound quality) Tight, tense and they keep the suspense going. Cobb is obviously head and heels better actor than the others but he just isn't a "leading man." Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable film noir excursion.
Yes the sound quality was irritating
I think he's quite good..Leading or Supporting😊
Second viewing, enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Sure, the plot's thin and it doesn't compare with the masterpieces, but not every film can be a champ. It's NOIR, and that's all that matters.....
Rex Hamann qqqq
We called them a "B" film, shown in a double feature with a "feature" film from a major studio.
Great old film i love watching them late at night.
The Lt. delivered a better sucker punch to his brother than his kiss to his girl😂 I found the opening scene with the dropped gun receipt and the closing with the floating scarf to be a nice pair of bookends.
This film is simply a masterclass in suspense! The way the music cues the dropped inspection slip, the way the lamp turned on to reveal the third bullet hole, the parkour chase along the city buildings, the echoey footsteps and whistling wind blowing through the abandoned fortress... all such effective (and cinematically-stunning) ways of eliciting anticipation from start to finish!
What is produced now has little of the production craft of yesterday.
Great theme for a noir movie. It's one thing when it's a confirmed bad cop that kills someone and tries to stay ahead of the investigation but when it's a good cop covering up for himself or a friend, relative, or a girlfriend things get a lot hairier. If its a good cop that has to make a hasty decision he's surely gonna make mistakes. A dirty cop, used to cover ups uses his deceitful instincts to slither out of predicaments. Try watching "Shield For Murder" with Edmund O'Brian right after this one. There's a similarity there but the differences are revealing too. In one portrayal the worst that the cop did was a cover up with all the accompanying behavior but allows things to escalate and get complicated. This because Cobb's character has a foil, his rookie cop brother. John Dall is just fine in his role. Jane Wyatt is the perfect bitch unfaithful wife.
Most all people who wish to be a cop, a detective, have a common inner desire to make things better. Being confronted with temptations and opportunities that the average Joe Lunchbox never comes across and how it is dealt with is the defining factor. The test of character. In the Cobb and O'Brian comparison both do great jobs in their roles exposing the differences. They both become desperate men, letting that desire to want to make things better dissolve into their immediate needs to stay free and alive. There's so much more I could ramble on about but I'm not gonna spoil the experience of anyone wanting to make the comparison of the two films. With all the viewing time available now being closed in its easy to get caught up in film analysis lol ! Thanks TMC for the many hours of indulgent solace. Its comforting to know that I always have your movies to go to 😉
Whew!
Good movie but there must have been a carton of cigarettes consumed by the actors in the first ten minutes of the movie. All these actors are probably dead by now!
53:34 - Wow! I love this apartment!
Everyone smoked it those days. Crazy to see Jane puffing.
It's ßooooooo good to Puff a lucky strike.......
Lee J. cobb 👌🏻👌🏻
I’d watch anything with that name on the list.
Cobb was also a harmonica virtuoso, and leader of the harmonica-band The Capybara Boys. You think I'm kidding....
And he was a disgusting namer of names in the 50's. Vile Cowardly man.
@@higgsmerino3925 I had no idea.
Very dramatic gestures. I have seen this movie a couple of times. Worth the watch 👍🏼
This is such a good movie! You can hear the little static in the background, The way they smoke the cigarettes, Just the whole flow of the movie there's no sex, there's just the story The way they build the story is so good ! wish they made movies like this! Peace to everyone
They make me laugh the way they clutch before a kiss, looks so desperate.
Back then they knew it was a serious move, not like today when kissing is just a prelude to sex and men's so little. That goes for both sex and kisses. Exceptions apply.
Guinea Pig, for a long time, kissing was sterile and awkward for the most part. Probably because of the Code. Married people in separate beds, already.
Yes....like assault
Nothing like these old B&W films!!!
Two thumbs up. Unpredictable plot twists. I agree the woman wasn't a great actor, but I can stand a little cheese in these old movies. Besides, the other actors were terrific. This should go down as Film Noir classic!
What a pleasant surprise! I have been a fan of Lee J. Cobb and Jane Wyatt for a long time, and discovered John Doll after I saw "Gun Crazy" the first time. An excellent plot, exciting and filmed in and around California. A must see for film noir fans!
I liked John Dall in Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope" (1948.)
Filmed in San Francisco, a real treat seeing the old 1950 city streets, GGB, Fort Point and surrounding areas!
Freedom Presents. When it was sanitary! Now, sh-t all over the place! Nasty
Lee J. Cobb is one fine actor. Seamless in his characterization .His cop in "The Exorcist" was a perfect swan song to a distinguished career. Salutes to you my gifted friend.
Thank you
Bill KINDERMAN! GREAT COMMENT TY
Bull ding, that character loves the movies. He mentions John Garfield!
He's not sexy enough to be having an affair with a beautiful adulteress. I could see somebody like Lloyd Bridges.
@@VintageVera This thing called suspension of disbelief, where you enjoy yourself in spite of fact it's all slightly imperfect fantasy.
I don't remember this film having
been shown but it's another example of a lost classic. Great
story with superlative actors. It's a
shame these wonderful films get lost somehow like socks in the dryer. Glad I found it but I'm still
searching for that other sock.
I didn't realize Lee Cobb was such a good actor
So many great shots especially toward the end. Fabulous long angles, shadowy images and the simplest of props to build tension. An art that gave way to graphics and technology.
What a great movie! How I missed this one over all the years of “old film buffing” I don’t know. Never EVER thought of Lee J. As “sexy” - - he kinda WAS in this film😍! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Do we think John Dall wears a toupe? I thought so in “Rope”, but the top is shorter in this one???? I dunno 🤷♀️
TYTYTY SO MUCH for this gift on a chilly, wet evening, snuggled under the blankies with a pot of tea! Ain’t life grand???💕🙏🙋♀️
Yeah, there is a BIT of sex appeal here (since Lee J. Cobb gets the girl & is a leading man)! It's a different type of role- for sure.
A pot of tea and film noir...ahhhhhh, life truly is good!
Can someone please explain the ending to me. Was she selling him out by cozing up to a prosecutor or cop senior to him? Or was she working on trying to get him out by doing that? I DON'T KNOW...Look at that long look between them. What was it for? Did he think she'll get him out of it, or did she say that HE was the killer and take off with a new guy.. MONEY CAN BY FREEDOM, apparently.
I would like to know it too…
It looks like she was throwing him under the bus and her money would get her off. He looked like he was understanding her for who she is and was resigned to the fact and looked like he almost respected her ruthlessness.
All of the above that's why the movie is called the man that cheated himself
That was her lawyer, not a prosecutor.
I've been in that yard at the fort and the footstep dubbing was so overdone it soundedas if they were walking on coconut halves! Otherwise a good flick.
I know that Jane Wyatt is playing a hysterical woman, but does she have to be so clingy & obnoxious?
Gotta see the original "12 Angry Men"...it's NOTHING like that politically correct BS that had Tom Cruise and the other Hams in it. They couldn't even make a perfect script go over!! SHAMEFUL! H. Fonda; J. Klugman; M. Balsam; Lee J. Cobb (oscar worthy); Jack Warden and more fab actors of the day!!
Klugman & Cobb waz booty warriors big time
Yes, I seen the original!! Your right, it is better...
Cruise did a remake of 12 Angry?
@@eggbertinkabod1121
So many deceased stars, and notable personalities are now being defamed as homosexual.
What proof do you have?
Go with the original!
Eggbert, who cares?
I agree that Jane Wyatt over acted. The hand against her forehead, grabbing a her neck. She was more funny than anything. Trying to play a tough cookie is not her style.
You're right. Father Knows Best.
Absolutely correct totally miscast in this role and cobb is better playing the bad guy like in on the waterfront
I see that Janet and Lois Lane had the same taste in cars, Nash Rambler convertible.
try and find one today
We called those goofy Nash' bathtubs.
Those cars look like giant bumper cars that you'd see in fairs!

@@JohnPMitten hahaha! Well....thank you, John
Loved seeing those cars after so many years. I believe they were Nash's or Studebakers I could be corrected. wow
They were all Nashes. The big bathtub sedans and the Lois Lane convertibles. It seems like cops in all the noirs of this era drove a Nash. funny how they enter the car by the front passenger door and then slide over. You can't do that today.
Excellent, thank you.
great old flick, they smoked a lot back in the day
SO MANY DIED EARLY BAD DIET ,SMOKING, NO EXERCISE , DRINKING TRAGIC.
Yes, they smoked alot, they they didn't know the danger. Actually people know the danger today but choose to ignore it, such a shame. I was once a Health Care Worker and watched people struggle for their next breath.
@@lora1492
They smoked a lot back then and they "did" know the danger.
They just wanted to believe the manufacturers claim that cigarettes were not only harmless to the smoker but also beneficial to his/her health.
One drag of a cigarette immediately tells the novice that this habit is not worth acquiring. But instead of shunning the habit, he embraces it, and then buys an S. T. Dupont and other tobacco accoutrements to show everyone that image is exceedingly more important than his health.
Sure, they smoked a lot of tobacco back then, now a lot of smoking is going on using Hippie Lettuce, lol. And Alcohol is used as much or more.
Lee J. Cobb (real name Leo Jacob) was a superb actor.
Amen. He was fantastic. His work in On the Waterfront and even more in 12 Angry Men was amazing.

Brilliant observation that the blood was going in two directions.....very 2000s

Jane Wyatt reeked of class, and she always plaedy responsible, forthright characters so it's fun to see her stretch by playing a three-timing femme fatale.

Very entertaining, if campy, the chase scenes in dress suit, tie and hat...which never fell off.
Now watch 'Time Table.' Mark Stevens investigates himself in crime in that one, & the entire plot is wonderful, as is the acting. This one is good, too.
Sorry to comment *4* years later, but for anyone else reading through the comments, this was a good recommendation. Thanks!

Well, I did sit still (sort of). Wyatt was revelatory! Playing so opposite from her usual roles. And beautiful to boot. Cobb was always good. Both of them were very letfist in their politics which is fine by me. Not a bad film - such chicanery! Such duplicity.

Min. 47: this intermezzo was sponsored by Lucky Strike. Can you imagine if on a population of 250 miljoen 10 % smokes a packet of cigarettes each day, how much air pollution that accounts for on 1 year time ? Something the Chinese should keep in mind, apparantly...
+Benoit Vanhees B ok & PC if it was WEED!!!
That look he gave her while his lighting up her cigarette is you fucked me good I was too stupid to see it coming you set me up good now is her lawyer turn his next
She just should have played it straight. It was an obvious case of self defense.
he was unarmed.
@@erniebakeswell9623 He broke in, and she had reported to the police that she was worried he would kill her as he'd recently bought a gun. AND they were divorcing.
@@Grimenoughtomaketherobotcry he didn't break in, he'd jimmied the door. this is way before "stand you ground" laws. a woman would have an edge with a jury. but there'd be a trial. and the whole sordid story comes out. and ruins her reputation and destroys the cop's.
12:00 "The truth can get you 20 years." That's the cop's opinion.
@@erniebakeswell9623 Right. And I'm sure at the end he'd like to take that back and have let her try her luck on a jury with a self-defence argument. And she might well have got off-HE talked her out of it by cooking up the plan to take the body to the airport. Was he thinking about her? or about himself? By the way, whether broken or jimmied, it's still forced entry. The husband's motive was clearly not robbery, so the argument could be made that this indicated he had a violent state of mind, which, along with her "terrified" state of mind, the gun purchase, the divorce, and her lawyer's ability to say ANYTHING about him without him rebutting it, and a jury's likely sympathy, she most likely would have gotten off, stand your ground law or not. Cobb's character would have a long time to mull it over...
Love the 2 Nashs and the 50 Chevy fassback
This was a nice film. While it started out rather average and Jane Wyatt's overacting is clearly a minus, it does have several great moments. One of the best is the scene were John Dall is running through the abandoned prison.
Jane has to win the 'hammiest' actress award for this one. She can't compare to Lee.
This is a keeper. It's a must see, very enjoyable film.
Thanks for posting.
Never got why they exit a car on the passenger side??
I reveal things about the story in this comment so don't complain if you read this before you watch the movie and it spoils the plot for you. Lots of comments here reveal that folks did not pay attention to what happened. The woman's husband had planned to murder her. He bought a gun and hid it in the house with the plan to return, break in, get the gun and shoot her with it. He probably planned on taking some obvious valuables and leaving with them to make it look like a break in. He was counting on being at the airport to be his alibi. She found the gun, had a bit of evidence to believe that he intended to kill her, and she freaked out and shot him when he came towards her. Because he did not have a lethal weapon in his hands, his shooting would be viewed as manslaughter at best, and maybe third, or second degree murder. The cop saw what happened and realized from the evidence that the husband did come back to murder her. The cop doesn't want his girlfriend to be charged with a crime that killed a guy who was planning on murdering her. He figured the guy's death could be passed off as an easy case of a mugging gone bad and it would all be forgotten. Everything up to that point is very believable. However, the scheme to fake the cause of death didn't go right from the beginning. He dumped the body in a highly visible location, and it was spotted as he was leaving the site in his car. Then the gun he thought he had gotten rid of was turned in to the police, etc. The plot may have gone off the rails around then because I think any sensible person would have told his brother what actually happened at that point. Slugging his brother and trying to run away with the gal is something no cop with a brain would have done. He'd know that even if they were not found right away, his, and her bank accounts and all investments, would be seized and they would have nothing to live on. The best part of this movie is the very end. Because she has a good lawyer and will throw the cop under the bus to save her own hide, he will probably go to jail for 2nd degree murder. He gets an expression on his face that reveals that he thinks that right before the movie ends.
@1:10:27...Man that car must be about forty feet long. Love those old forties boats. I imagine gasoline was about twenty cents a gallon back then. Probably handled like a tank and could go through a brick wall like one as well😀😀😀
Try 16 cents. And they'd throw in some dish towels or juice glasses. some dish towels.
@@billding7073 And clean your windshield, check your oil and tire pressure, etc.
I commanded a tank platoon in Germany in 1964-65, and I can guarantee you that you did NOT try to drive a tank through a brick wall or a big tree.
A fun B-film. The Film Noir elements make up for the loose script, corny ending and suprisingly poor Jany Wyatt acting. My local movie theater played these films constantly---and we loved them!
Jane Wyatt also played Spock's mom and wife of Sarek.
And was in “Lost Horizon”.
One of the best moments cinematically so during the pandemic brought to us by the WHO.
Women always know how to play the victim! I was suspicious when she shot him as soon as he came into the room. While Lee Cobb was in the room too but she said she shot him bc he was going to kill her?
What kind of ending is that-I don't want to give it away, but him? An accomplice?

Great footage of Civil War era Fort Point in San Francisco. In 1950--this would have been part of The Presidio Army base. it was preserved from demolition when the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed in the 1930; it was thought it would cost more to demolish the fort than it was worth, to say nothing of its historical value. But it's about the last place anyone should go to escape from cops--cold, windy--and surrounded by water. Though there is no clear indication of fencing, one could walk to the beach from the fort, if the tide was low. But once you got there, it would be steep uphill climb to the street and you would still be in the Military Presidio. I think I recognized Grace Cathedral on California Street, they are heading toward Polk St. Most of the other places were simply too generic to clearly recognize as San Francisco.
Steven Torrey In 1994 the Presidio became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.. I don't know when Fort Point became an historical attraction open to the public. Always a great place to visit.

the real twist is how a color blind person would see blue as green and not the other way around...
