Great stuff Ben. I too enjoy aircraft (I'm a repair manager for the F18 Super Hornet GE engines) and fly both RC fixed wing and helicopters. I tend to stay out of the real choppers, I give you credit for summoning the courage to do so!! Keep up the excellent content and please continue to take us along on more of your life's adventures. BTW I did purchase the Spitfire hat from the Temora Aviation Museum for my son; they were very professional and my son absolute adores the hat!!! Thank you much for hooking me up with the Temora folks and for sharing the air show pics. Cheers brother and take good care of mom and dad!!
Matthew form facebook here Ben im off to Avalon next week any tips on seetings and shutter speeds the jets are no problam it the prop planes i want to get 100% especialy the Spitfire and Connie getting them just at the right shutter speed to get the prop movement just right i got my exposures right i dont want to stuff these up im useing a full frame 6D sigma 120-400mm and 7D and 24-70mmf2.8L with practicing today 1/500sec f8 to16 at 250mm to 400mm seamd to get the prop movement just right but when i zoom in at 100% on the pc they are not pin sharp.
Matthew Burniston it's a skill you will need to work on, I use 1/125th to get nice blur, but, only really score 1 in 5 shots sharp, my advice is take some at 1/125. It also some at a faster speed so you don't miss out on The shot. If you have VR use it, some VR are great and will do the trick, if you have a tripod or monopod use it too. Good luck. Ben.
Oh how funny this is, I just literally hasd this video pop up in my recommended to watch. So i click the video to have a watch and sure enough i was just at one of pauls airshows taking photos. Im lucky to know paul himself so i managed to pull some strings and get access to the aircraft side of the fence.
Hi PittSlayer89, Thanks for watching the video and for sharing your experience! That's really cool that you were just at one of Paul's airshows and were able to take photos from the aircraft side of the fence. Sounds like you had some great access! Paul puts on some amazing shows, and it's always a thrill to photograph these incredible planes in action. I hope you had a great time and captured some amazing shots. Thanks again for sharing your story and for tuning in. I hope you'll enjoy more of my videos in the future!
Enjoyed this and your Andrew Marr challenge. Like you I've a passion for aviation. I've just retired from flying instructing where I taught guys on Seneca twins Instrument ratings etc. Looking forward to more of your videos and another challenge with Andrew. David E (UK)
enjoyed that, I was a pilot in the late 70's, early 80's until blood pressure meds were required. Had to give it up. Can't afford two expensive hobbies anyway!
Seems expensive for that helicopter. You can get a Boeing 747 for 20k US per hour. www.privatefly.com/private-jets/large-airliner-hire/Boeing-747-400.html Is there something special about it?
I think their figure included all the maintenance provisions as well as hourly running costs. It was fitted with missile detection equipment and all sorts of fancy stuff.
For those aircraft I'd be using my 80D, not my 6D. It's like having a teleconverter that doesn't lose light. I'd set the exposure from the low side of your aircraft, I don't think a camera can guess the exposure for that job. it's a but like photographing tall grass against the sky, birds in flight. Do you have any photos to show?
Great to see the outdoor work,& tips on camera settings. Cheers Ben
Thanks John! Always happy to share :-)

Eric Maki shooting air shows?
Yes
Like the pilot ray ban glasses for the occasion :)
Ha ha.. yes, you need to wear aviators at an airshow ;-)
Nice, I too share both of those interests.

Steve H thanks. Sometimes it's a balancing act to afford both, Cheers Ben
The sounds of the aircraft engines would be the best music for my ears.
Tim 63 I love it too! Cheers, Ben
