@throwaway1184 You mean you can't prove God empirically. You can prove God a priori. Alex ive been watching you since you were just a humble teenager in his parents house making videos in his room. I remember it was during a time filled with a holes debate bros. But you seemed genuine and brilliant. Im so happy to see how far you have come.
To think of it in a outer perspective, God creating the universe and only makes humans in such a large universe, occasionally sends his "messages" through selected individuals telling the people to follow this "God" or else they'd end up in hell. Does nothing when his creation is fucking shit up, and demands worship from individuals constantly. It seems to me such illogical nonsense now.
Do you feel that God is demanding something of you? I don't think so. But we do believe that at the hour of judgment, He will judge everyone and either let us come to Him or reject us.
This is so funny man 😂 How can you say that God doesn’t intervene when his creation goes completely astray while He destroyed so many generations before us for the sins they did. Remember the flood? Like almost a third of the world is monotheist now
During Alex’s debate with Ben Shapiro, Shapiro made the point that a lot of the people responsible for scientific inquiries were, themselves, religious. And this proves Christianity has had a good history with science. If I were to argue with Shapiro, my response would have probably been “Can we really even say Christianity tolerated science if the only way scientific discoveries could have been made was through a few individuals, over hundreds to maybe a thousand years having the courage to make these discoveries despite the nationwide religious order?” I really don’t think the faith of the individuals scientists is really what’s important, what’s important is the broader religious order because the vast majority of societies after 0 A.D. had people who made scientific discoveries, but we wouldn’t want to say those societies are necessarily kind to the scientific process
Actually it was mostly people who were science minded who were either trying to go beyond what religion taught, people who were Christian because they didn't bother to say otherwise and a handful of people who attempted to use science to prove religion and found the opposite.
This is the same argument people make about the scientific advancements of the Islamic "Golden Age." It's not Islam that produced this intellectual culture. It was the existence of an economically prosperous, socially stratified, politically stable but culturally diverse environment that enabled an intellectual class (consisting of many non-Muslims) to emerge. Ditto for Christianity in Europe.
I would say the reason the relative lack of scientific breakthroughs would be because of the lack of education infrastructure. Not only was the population of Europe much less, the population of sufficiently-educated Europeans was much much less, and the number of those being intellectually-competent enough to make step towards was even less. Then also include the fact that there was less knowledge to build on and it was more difficult to access what knowledge was there. Assuming there's no collapse of society, science will almost always develop exponentially because education infrastructure improves which allows for more people working in science, availability of knowledge improves which allows for more breakthroughs to be made

to all the comments, im a big fan of alex as a christian myself. alex is generalizing religion in this speech based on a good amount of so called "christians" who force their religion onto other people and are not open to conversation about any other belief system or religon. one thing clear, *this is not all christians*. it is massively important as followers of jesus to study other beliefs and be open, because if we only know our own religion well, we can never argue against the other side without knowing where they are coming from. in short, its some people in the religion who are close minded and hostile, meanwhile the other true followers who are open minded, although firm in their own belief.
I view religion as a evolutionary advantage we just like other evolutionary advantages like being very energy effient with kcal consumption we just dont need this anymore, our body holds on to energy storage just as well as it often does to religion, it is hard to let go of a lerned thought construct as religion is for some maybe even impossible. I would also like to mention believing in something supernatural or that something exists wich humans cant ever understand is not nearly as unreasonable as religion.
It doesn't even matter if he did or did not rise from the dead. Why,? Because every living thing still dies regardless of beliefs and evil entertainment for some being is still rampid. Disappearing and abandoning humanity is what actually matters. If you rise from the dead and disappear it does not mean anything at all.
Example: Galileo. He was excommunicated for interpreting scripture, which the church claimed authority over, not his discoveries. Copernicus had the same theory before him and was never excommunicated. Galileo subverted the prevailing scientific theory of geocentrism, and catholicism interpreted scripture based on the prevailing scientific theories of the time and reinterpreted it when consensus changed. It's important to note that most scientists did not find Galileo convincing, meaning he was the one "rejecting scientific consensus"
Actually Protestant missionaries improved the education system, built hospitals and fought the caste system in India for marginalized groups ie. women and lower castes. Education also improved where missionaries were in Africa as well as South America. Although some missionary groups thought Christ was coming back soon in some parts of South America while they were there and didn’t build as much schools and hospitals and focused more on evangelizing. I don’t have the scholarly sources handy but I can provide them if asked.
He may be right when it comes to certain Christian conflicts with scientists e.g. Galileo and his ideas about the solar system. However the same cannot be said for islam, since it was Muslim rulers who sponsored scientist and scholars. A whole book written about this is by Jim Al Khalil 'Pathfinders' . And Khalili is an atheist.
I grew up religious and the belief that I settled on for myself is that there can be no true faith without free will. If there truly is a God, and he intended for us to believe in him, but created us with free will, it would be his design that people choose whether to believe or not, and therefore that belief is morally equal to disbelief and skepticism in that hypothetical creator’s eyes, and whatever anyone believes for themselves as an expression of their autonomy is their “god-given” right, in the sense that it inherent to their being and I would be disrespecting not only another human being but also betraying my own belief to try and suppress, control, or influence another’s beliefs to match my own outside of the free and open exchange of ideas.
Let's not forget all of those biligerant religious people who were nearly the only ones to stand up against the governmental authority of Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and many other eras of authoritarian brutality. Paul Dirac, upset by dishonesty and self deception in religion, stated: " I cannot understand why we are talking about religion. If we are honest-and scientists have to be-we must admit that religion is a jumble of false assertions, with no basis in reality. The very idea of God is a product of the human imagination" to which Wolfgang Pauli commented "Our friend Dirac has his own religion and its guiding principle is, There is no God and Dirac is his prophet."
"If we are honest - and scientists have to be - " Is that why they had no choice but to figure out the way to make thermonuclear bombs? It sometimes seems more is needed than 'honesty'.
Is that not the unique quality of Western civilization and the western Church in that there has always been a tension between the centralising forces of the institution and dissidents, some of whose ideas eventually end up as currency in the culture. I'm thinking early mystic sects, Galileo, Martin Luther and many others who no doubt have provoked violent reaction, wars and so on but at least there has always been that possibility of dialogue and for ideas to be tested in the crucible of relatively free societies. Continuity and change or the dialogue between them ongoing.
I'll explain this when asked. Free will exists and GOD exists. Understand what I call: Levels of Proof. There can NEVER be absolute proof of anything . There is however, the next best thing which is usefulness and benefit. GOD is useful and beneficial. Free will observation/ belief is useful in meting out judgement.
My question is, why does it matter? Christianity has been proven to be helpful to many unless used incorrectly but that's with most things. I often wonder why people strive to take away this religous unity from others even if it is all a delusion. Many of the friendliest/hardworking people I've known have been Christian. It's almost as if having a God or entity whose sole purpose is to instill hope and drive morality is a good thing for mankind. Even so, why target Christianity? Other religions have shown to be far more dangerous and much less cohesive. It's all so strange to me.

Most of the restraint is on stuff that can send your life in a downward spiral anyway. Things like excessive booze and loose women. Lots of religions are WISELY against those things.
@@theboombodyi grew up in the U.S.A., a christian nation, and its my 80 years of existence that religion did very little or next to nothing to stop whoring (married men or women ), drinking and being overly celebratory. An occasional mormon, muslim, or some other cult does abstain from those “loose” behaviors, but then they replace them with some other equivalent vice, such as greed, and holier-than-thou attitude, etc.

You can’t disprove God. You can only disprove religion and the worship on him.
You can't prove god

He wasn't trying to disprove God. If you want someone to disprove something, you're going to have to present something falsifiable.
Why all the debate? Put simply, religious people make their religion other peoples' problem - whether it's through laws, proselytizing, or some other means. It can be direct or indirect, overt or subtle.
What the hell is "spiritual evidence?"
@throwaway1184 You mean you can't prove God empirically. You can prove God a priori. But you likely wouldn't accept that because you're likely under the impression that God is a being, which would be a delusion. The ground of Being can't be a being, and can't be categorical. You can't prove that empirically.

During Alex’s debate with Ben Shapiro, Shapiro made the point that a lot of the people responsible for scientific inquiries were, themselves, religious. And this proves Christianity has had a good history with science. If I were to argue with Shapiro, my response would have probably been “Can we really even say Christianity tolerated science if the only way scientific discoveries could have been made was through a few individuals, over hundreds to maybe a thousand years having the courage to make these discoveries despite the nationwide religious order?”
I really don’t think the faith of the individuals scientists is really what’s important, what’s important is the broader religious order because the vast majority of societies after 0 A.D. had people who made scientific discoveries, but we wouldn’t want to say those societies are necessarily kind to the scientific process
Assuming there's no collapse of society, science will almost always develop exponentially because education infrastructure improves which allows for more people working in science, availability of knowledge improves which allows for more breakthroughs to be made
@@danielessex2162how did they try to use science to prove religion?
@@elijahknox4421 by thinking they could validate the myths in the bible.
ie catholic archeologists who tried to prove the global flood actually ended up debunking it.
A group of scientists who wanted to disprove evolution ended up providing studies and data to help prove evolution and that evidence helped lead to medical data that benefits all of society. This, by the way, is not a benefit from religion as once they discovered thier line of thinking was debunked they abandoned their pursuit amd the benefits of their works was done by biologists who were looking to further medical science not to benefit religious approval.
A few other similar cases to these last two are evidence that debunk the Egypt Exodus, The supposed town of King David, Sodom and Gomorrah, the trail that Moses supposedly traveled with his people. Several other attempts to debunk evolution or germ theory had also benefited some form of medical science.

I find that funny that he says that while admitting that the non-existence of moral standards is a prerequisite of atheism.

Is this our new Chris Hitchens?
