Tacoma Power Steering Pump Fix (First Gen)

If your power steering pump is making a loud whining noise it is most likely a clogged screen on the resevoir. In this video I show the method I used to clean mine and fix the problem.

Completely changing out fluid every twenty years or so helps a lot.

WOW! Funny how I hear noises and say, "that's it, I'm buying a new truck", but the solution has always been very simple. I bought my Prerunner new in 1999. At 251K miles, this week, I heard the power steering whine, it became embarrassingly loud real fast. I cleaned the screen like you did in the vid and it's totally quiet now. I have two things left to do, been putting off, the timing belt and valve cover gasket is leaking. So tired of that smell.

This is a great video and I'm glad to see it's for the 2.7, everything out there is for the 3.4.
What's the trick to getting off that front bolt? even with the pulley holes lined up I can't fit a socket on it. I can get super close but the socket just won't fit through the hole.

@@flyinryanmtb thank you for the immediate reply. My problem is that even with the hole aligned, I can't get on to the bolt, the pulley is still slightly in the way

@@andrewarzoian4266 that’s weird I would think they are all the same. maybe try a crows foot wrench or crank the motor and try with the pulley in a different clock position. I remember I had to crank it a few times to get it lined up just right

It is easy if you remove the fan shroud. I have a 1995 2.7L and the reservoir's screen has a hole just in the middle.

yeah it lacked a little bit of power but it was mainly just a really loud whining noise

@@rudyromero4001 Try flushing the old fluid out and putting in fresh fluid. Also make sure your NOT using power steering fluid. these trucks use dexron atf fluid
