0:43 I know it's just an animation for representation, but unless there is a mirror or other similar reflective surfaces for specifically reflecting the LASER, the LASER won't bounce back as its LASER form from uneven surfaces, what the altimeter would measure would just be scattered light from the surface, even a minuscule level of light would be enough for it to detect and calculate the altitude. Basically it would basically 'see' the laser pointer on the surface as dot, 'seeing' the dot means, it has captured a fraction of light reflected from the surface in all direction, the fraction that has come back to it in its direction. It's same as if we human just point a laser at a wall and see the laser dot on the wall.....we are not seeing the entire beam to be bounced back towards us, but a small fraction of it that has come towards us. Edit: Alright after watching the rest of the video, I see that the thing I commented above was covered pretty much, including the actual dots that the receiver "sees" on the surface.

Hi there, so I have a question, we have seen in TBBT that they fired a LASER from earth to NASA's retroreflectors. So can we do something like that from our home? If so, what kind of equipment are required to do so?
Dear Gareeb Scientist, I would appreciate if you could explain and elucidate what positives could be / are achieved by NASA successfully sending laser at Chandrayaan-3 lander? If as per the explanation given by you in this video, the aim of this exercise is to ascertain altitude of future landers wrt moon's surface, with more accuracy, then I guess, it would be quite a nominal ambition...not a very significant outcome.
They all are getting initial data of the assistive tech that would be part of next generation landers. Small experiments are much less expensive than a failure landing of full fledged vehicle. Also, there are not many chances to do such experiments on your own when your space program is leeched out with tons of projects, so all space agencies across the globe are using each other to do their experiments. It's good until the commercialisation of those things starts in the next century.
Bhayya.. I have one doubt. Why didn't isro put radio active isotope on pragyan rover? I know it costs a lot. Chinese space agency also uses 1kg of isotope on their moon rover. It costed them around 8cr (1million dollar) approx.

A Chinese company has successfully done launch and landing test as it aims to build a reusable rocket. The Kuaizhou reusable technology test rocket lifted off from a pad at test facilities on Jan. 26 2024, hovering in the air for nine seconds before landing back at the takeoff area. The flight lasted 22 seconds. Expace is known for its expendable Kuaizhou solid rockets, which have conducted two orbital launches this year already. But the company has previousely said that it's adding reusable methane-liquid oxygen rockets too. The country's government opened the space to private sector in 2014, leading large number of startups. A number of these are now launching, or are close to launching, liquid propellant rockets with potential reusability. China is making major gains amongst the Asian states.
