I was so happy to get Southern Comfort on 4k. It's actually in my top 5 movies of all time and actually very believable. Only one of the national guardsmen pretended to shoot at the Cajuns, so it wasn't like the entire unit did. The rest of them thought the guy was an idiot to do it. So really as long as you buy into the fact that one idiot can make a bad decision that put his entire unit at risk then it's not far fetched at all. Just like in Walter Hill's The Warriors, it's about how do a group of friends or in this case soldiers handle being in an actual survival situation. I love it because it's not like every other action movie out there and like I say very believable. Just go into those parts of America and threaten those backwoods people and you'll quickly find they won't just let it go.
I guess when I look at it the way you describe it I think it does make more sense. I always envision the military as so “responsible” and reserved - especially on our own land and with our own citizens. But you are most certainly right about it “only taking one idiot.” And the rest of the group was pissed at him for doing it… I loved “The Warriors.” Exaggerated points in that one about street gangs but it was a very fun and interesting film. I have a feeling I'll probably dig Southern Comfort a little more than you did... it looks right up my alley, especially having become a fan of Walter Hill's work over the last year or two. You’ll like Southern Comfort- as one commenter here already said (Scott Cunningham) there actually is some truth to the plot. I guess I didn’t see it that way from the start or I would have enjoyed it more. Let me know your thoughts if you get around to it. I watched Red Rock West last night and was pleasantly surprised! A great “neo-noir” type crime thriller film with Nicolas Cage playing a great role alongside Dennis Hopper. I did notice on my copy with the special features on the interview with Director John Dahl, there were some audio issues. It changes pitch then drops out for about 10 seconds. I may let VS know about it but I didn’t think it too major an issue. Hope you enjoy them both my brother!
