  • Life in the province of the Philippines with my favorite lola. For the holiday season, my family and i spent time with my filipino grandma or Lola in her home town of San Jose in Mindoro, Philippines. Because of the typhoon there was no wifi, phone service, electricity or running water! So this is how we had to spend the week, with eachother and that's all! Family Vlogs are back! Vlog 585

Kagaya ng vid na ito, you experienced typhoon, blackout and zero data connection sometimes these situations allows us to spend time together with our loved ones rather than spend our time going out or countless hours we spend on our smartphones ....

Another great vlog! 😌

    Long comment, sorry...
Love your stuff, thx for all you do. This reminds me of my first trip of more to come to the PH. As an American, I was struck by the beauty and the struggles of the Philippines. I never could form the words to ask anyone about the struggles of living in the Philippines. While staying in Oslob, the owner of the resort I was at, stood with me on the side of the road, making sure I caught the right bus. While talking, he brought up how hard it was for many living in the Philippines...I asked him from my western perspective, I see so many people living in what I would consider poverty, but everyone seems so happy!
He told me, that is what he had learned from his parents, his grandparents, and his great grandparents... if the big storm comes and destroys everything, the sun will still come out, and we make the best of it.
I didn't think I was going to go to the other side of the world for a life lesson, but I did, and am grateful I did. Salamat Philippines!

I went to Australia when i was 26, due to some circumstances, i couldn't come home for years so my mom came to see me 4 years later. When i met her on the airport i was so happy but in that moment i tried not to cry... not because of missing her company and this being the first time to be able to see her again after so long... its because i saw in her what changed in those 4 years apart... 4 years of her life i wasn't there for and could never get back... 4 years out of how many more till i loose her forever. After that i made it a mission to at least come home every year or have her visit me at least. We don't have long with some of our most loved ones and we often don't realize this fact until its too late. Im pretty sure your Lola will remember all those hugs from her apo's until the day she has to go... godbless wil this was beautiful

    Elders knows everything.
I have been taught of people around me that we all have to work, we have to continue grinding. After every activity, we will do another activity.
I am always reminded that when we work too much, we will either be burnt out or sick of what we are doing even though we love it. I'm quite teary eyed when your Grand mom told you that her sun is about to go down. When my Lolo was still alive, he always told me that every human is special like me. Everyone is as witty as me. I just have to talk with them(as I don't talk to people back in the day). He always encourage me to learn how to play ball or run with other kids. And when we sat together, he mentioned how lucky we are knowing that we did not experience the hardest part of life here in Philippines.
Thank you for sharing us your Lola, Wil.

We are resilient and just like how you surpassed the struggles when you got the Big C, you do inspire people by trying to share this culture we have that somehow lifts the positive things after the negative things rushes in.

Wil, thanks for showcasing your Lola. I never met any of mine since they passed on either before I was born or still a baby. She seems to be a tough old woman (probably because she’s always moving/doing something). One thing most Filipinos are good at: squatting. It shows in your Lola, amazing at her age. You’re a good grandson. Happy to see you were giving her lots of hugs and attention. In another note: that bagyo and black out brought back memories. The wind can really be powerful, it’ll knock down trees, etc. You’re on point that situations like that bring back old ways of getting together with families: unplugged but having a good time. Cheers to you all! 🙏🏼👏❤️

Very similar to my story. Migrated to Australia from the Philippines when I was 8yo. I'm now 42. Recently lost my Lola (who raised my 2 siblings and I in Bato, Bicol - our mum worked and sent money back from Manila), this October. Broke my heart not to be able say goodbye and see her, due to Covid. This video awakened memories of her. I'm crying, I'm laughing...man I miss my Filipino family!

I remember my maternal Lola. She lived all her life in the remote province as a young widow who was left to raise her 5 children all by herself thru farming just as WW2 was raging in the Phils. No electricity ( it was alien to the folks), fetched water from river, and firewood had to be gathered. My Lola managed to acquire a piece of land she could farm. She, planted crops, coconut trees, weaved her mat ( banig), sew their own clothes, along with her children. My mom was only 3 yrs old, and education for them was limited to 3 yrs primary ( grammar). But they survived and thrived thru hard work. Lola's only diversion was chewing betel nuts and occasional betting on ' huweteng'.. She did not remarry and remain devoted to her children and her land till they had families of their own. One time she visited as in the city. But she was restless, she could not stand it, the conveniences, the crowd..the noise..etc. She was constantly looking forr anything she could do. She got hold of some old Abaca fiber and made a rope out of it. She ate dried fish, boiled vegies, no meat. That's how I remember her

This is a great vlog. Gives those without hope (after effects of the lindol) to have hope.
Inspired to be positive and act like a filipino. All is well despite hardships and difficulties.
I was in the PH for the first time a few days ago and saw the after effects of Lindol Tisoy... But my family showed genuine happiness that they are still alive and will go through the hardships with a smile. 👍

brandon gulapa Get lost! is the informal way of saying go away, leave, go, get out etc. which is commonly used by western countries.. Wil’s translation is correct...

get lost parang “layas na” informal of saying “umalis k n”. polite naman ung sabi ng lola nya kaya ung translation parang di tama.
