  • This is my reaction to a police chase of gym owner Paul Whyatt, of Thorney, Cambridgeshire, out pacing a police car that was doing 148mph, with a fake number plate on his BMW S1000RR registered to a car in Hampshire.

You know, they should just acknowledge that someone on a modern bike is easily able to leave them for dust, so even trying to catch them at those speeds puts the public and them in unnecessary, futile danger.

Which one? The guy that ran from the cops and t-boned a car in the driver’s door killing the driver? The other drunk with two dudes that hit a curb at a T intersection launching the passenger over 200’ and the driver through and the driver through the top layer of a 7’ tall barbed wire fence decapating him? The guy (in a car) I chased that went the wrong way in a construction zone headlong into a semi?
Few cops will chase a bike because your going to lose, get the plate and a description and go on your way. The problem is they still tend to keep running and wreck hurting others. Glorifying them running is a bad thing.

@@soonerfrac4611 I personally always pulled over the first safe space. A lot of times I only got a warning by being polite and making his job easy. Even had a speeding ticket at over 96mph reduced to 75. because of it. 96 is going to jail with the car impounded, 75 is a ticket. At 2 oclock in the morning and I hadn't seen another car for over a half hour. When I went around the turn he was running radar. When his lights came on I downshifted and pulled in front of him. Once he knew I wasn't a threat or going to be a smartass his demeanor changed.

    • @soonerfrac4611

Absolutely the right response. Both officers and drivers should be respectful and it will usually work out best for all parties involved. Unless you act like an A-hole the cops will often lower the speed to keep you from losing your license and vehicle.
But there’s times, such as this, where the book should be thrown at the driver and the cops should be reprimanded for continuing the pursuit in such a tight residential neighborhood.
And videos like these both profit from and promote the reckless behavior of the bike rider.

That will NEVER happen in the UK trust me. Despite the constant shittalk about usa cops, UK cops are way more stuck up and act like assholes. You mess up, thats it no chance of getting out of it. When i started riding, on the first day my bike was delivered i got pulled over because the ANPR camera system flagged me up for a nearby police car as uninsured, eventough i was insured but the MID system that stores insurance data updates in 48 hours. So they pull me over, i stop, cop jumps out runs up on me and grabs my key almost knocking me over acting like i was gonna run with the engine off. Then they would hold me for 30 mins because despite me giving them my licence and insurance, they didnt believe i was insured eventough the certificate stated that the insurance was signed that day... They tried calling the insurer (at 6pm) ofc noone picked up the phone and then after fuckin around for a while more they let me go and told me to sort it out...

A couple decades back, on a very early Sunday morning, I got passed by a guy on a huge bike that looked like he was going well over 200 mph. This was on the 90/94 in Chicago and we were practically the only vehicles on the highway because it was so early on Sunday.
I was going fast, but I saw a tiny blur in my mirror, then he zoomed right past me on the left, and wound his way down the highway before disappearing in seconds.
It was the fastest vehicle I ever saw, and I’ve been on German autobahns. Wish I knew what kind of bike it was.
Considering Chicago PD’s well-earned reputation for not f’ing around when they get upset by someone, I was amazed he took such a chance. I totally agree they are easy, even encouraging to whip it through twistys and even from pretty low revs, pull harder and harder as the revs rise but no sudden cut in of any sharp narrow powerband, it came on so progressively and built to PLENTY enough to do everything effortlessly. I loved the fact it was a bike I did intend to do some club racing on with virtually no modifications. I'd be surprised if it couldn't have placed well at that level racing and would have been great fun to be able to use all it had without worrying about getting booked for doing triple the speed limit seconds after taking off lol.
Mine ended when a **** launched his ridiculously jacked up Jeep wagon and I slammed into the side of it at very close to the 100 kph speed limit, I wasn't expected to survive either. A lovely 3 month holiday in intensive care after the first 8 days on full life support in an induced coma while they waited for me to drop off my perch. I'm still pretty stuffed but, I am riding lesser bikes I have and trying to decide whether with a much more limited ability to ride a reasonable distance I can justify the expense.
It's great but kinda weird that such a fantastic bike to ride also has a few little luxuries like the heated grips and cruise control, oh man did I love that cruise control lol. I clocked up 35,000 kilometers on mine and loved every bit, well, except for one road I know that was a bit too patched and rough that the suspension didn't cope well but, everywhere else, it was awesome.

I used to work shifts and was returning home around 3am southbound on the M23, a deserted and clear motorway with zero traffic. An unexpected disruption came into view - a blockade of blue lights up in the distance. I slowed down, eventually coming to a complete stop at the scene. Within a minute, an undercover cop car pulled up behind me, an officer with a distinct Scottish accent approached, looking none too pleased.
The lecture that followed was one for the books! He spared no words in expressing their frustration, emphasising the dangers of high-speed riding and admonishing me for reckless behaviour, "It's idiots like you we have to scrape up off the floor and then have to go and break the news to your wife and family". As the verbal reprimand reached its peak, the officer directed me to the back of their car, where they proceeded to showcase the evidence against me on their dash screen.
I watched the footage, revealing that they had entered the at the Gatwick junction just as I had zipped past. The on-screen display shows them rapidly accelerating, 110, 120, 130, 140+ mph, but I had already become a distant speck, chin on the tank, elbows tucked in, my TL1000R bouncing off the limiter. Unbeknownst to me, they instantly coordinated with a unit two junctions ahead at Pease Pottage, strategically placing a van on the bridge and two cars either side of the junction, anticipating a potential escape attempt.
Just when I thought the situation couldn't get any worse, another officer chimed in with a case where a motorcyclist had been sent to prison for traveling at twice the national speed limit. The dread settled in, and I braced myself for the impending legal storm. However, the unexpected twist came when the officer asked me about the wording flashing on their screen throughout the footage.
Upon closer inspection, I noted that the word 'calibrate' appeared every two seconds. The officer revealed that this message surfaced periodically, signalling the need to test and recalibrate the system. He went on to say the system's accuracy never deviated by more than a decimal, and that it only just starting flashing up 5 minutes ago. But the 'calibrate' message meant it would never stand up in a court of law.
With a hint of amusement, the officer acknowledged the fortunate timing of my escapade, pointing out that, on this night, I was the luckiest man alive. The lecture concluded, and after a thorough ID check on me, the bike, and insurance, I was surprisingly allowed to ride off into the night, escaping any legal consequences.
As the motorway disappeared in my side mirror, the echoes of the 'calibrate' message lingered in my mind, serving as a surreal mix of relief and disbelief at the sheer serendipity that defined my life that night, a turning point. Oddly, those flashing blue lights, meant to enforce the law, inadvertently became the silent guardians that saved many lives that night.

Self and few friends would play cat n mouse with small town America cops more times than I can count, never at such high speeds and I had strict rules such as innitial distance far beyond plate reading ability, often they didn't even use lights, tried to be stealthy, never used a siren I can recall. Mostly on high performance bikes but also dirt bikes and pickup trucks, only got caught once hr AFTER it was over bc we returned to town too soon in pickup, would have got away with that too except one of four of us, crammed into cab, caved during interrogation. Roommate/driver paid a few grand fine. (adjusting for inflation) Always park for the night after a chase, next day somehow it was too late for culpability.
Was great fun for all involved, no doubt cops enjoyed as much as us except for always losing. :D That was back in the '80's when courts didn't take it too serious tho a good beating by cops was always likely.

Of course he didn't follow when you turned into a field. With such a great disguise, they were probably just wondering where you'd gone.

I've no need for it, but I almost want to buy a bike like this as an investment. Don't ride it (much) just put it in storage for 25 years. It's just a matter of time before nanny nations ban them.

Yeah they limit it just like with air rifles and everything and the pathetic lefties who love rules will praise the tyrannts in gov.

A ban on modding bikes? That’s so communist. Next they’ll ban a hammer and screwdriver

That's not a bad idea, especially if it's a rarer bike, like an M1000RR or a Ducati 1199 Superleggera. 25+ years from now, I think you'd make a lot of money selling it. But I'm no expert.

I was doing 120 on the highway and a speed-trap cop flashed their lights. I gave the bike the rest of the throttle, purely based on it scaring the shit out of me. The cop turned off their lights and didn't pursue. It was 1am so hardly any traffic. I got lucky. It was a time before traffic and red light cams. Nowadays you've got to have no license plate to outrun anything.

Even an experienced riders day can turn bad in a heart beat, plus there are a lot of riders who actually believe they are experienced until they find out they are not. I have seen a lot of them, even watched them get zipped up in a bag and hauled away.

    From reporting on Cambridgeshire live:
A judge criticised Whyatt for his "his arrogance and stupidity" after hearing the backpack also contained a sheath knife which was uncovered by police.

I was out for a Sunday ride once, taking a break sat on a wall next to my bike at a small petrol station in the middle of no-where. I could hear a bike coming and it flew past, knee down round the bend the petrol station was on. About 30 seconds later a bike cop pulled into the station and parked next to me. "Did a fireblade just come past here?" he asked. "Yeah" I said, "pretty quick, had his knee down round this bend too". Cop said he'd been chasing him for a while but couldn't keep up, said he was actually quite impressed with his riding, a bit fast but safe overall and that he was only gonna tell him his brake light wasn't working! We had a chat for a while and a laugh about it and then he was off on his way again. Cop was pretty cool and loved bikes / riding too.

5:20 70mph+ in a residential area with no contact to the bike. That is really dumb.
