    The tan sao is one of the most misunderstood and misapplied in Wing Chun. I have had to retrain many students from other lineages amd even from my own cousin lineages. Most people who don't understand it end up abandoning it. However Tan Sao & Tan Da is a beautiful technique and concept. For begginers, make sure you develop proficiency early on. That will prevent frustration later on. You know when I think back. It is all about having the right Sifu and diligent practice in form and application. I personally require high standards in all aspect of the art.

      Totally agree. I've been studying many years in a school, going several courses with a different Sifus, and thinking i was on the right way. Then i moved out for living a thousand miles, and found a new Sifu (student of the same Sigung as my first Sifu), and fall into frustration. He tested me to know muy "real" level, not what you get paying for a title. I had go back some grades. And about the Tan Sao... The test was something so "simple" as put myself whole back against a wall (touching it completely), my Sifu on contact on my arm, and pressing hard to need to do a right Tan Sao. There is when you realize if you understand wing tsun, the tan sao, the pression, the angles, the conection... A new beginning for me. And so many years wrong because i had not a good guide. Sorry by my english not so good. Greetings from the Canary Islands.

    If you can master one movement you will quickly acknowledge that every other movement is the same.
    When I trained with my grandmaster, I quickly learnt that each time the movement was successful, the less effort I seemed to use. I liken a good tan sau to carrying a load of fire wood across both arms. I’m not holding the weight with my hands. It is laying across both arms and most of the weight is directly over my elbows. My stance is the power behind the shape of the arms. When I lift a dead weight I need to have my body in the right position. Tan sau is the same.
    My students can’t stop my tan sau now. Not sure if it’s perfect but it requires little effort to work extremely well.

    Great point! My Sifu teaches the same thing. In fact, he is one of those 4 instructors that you criticized in the beginning of your video. Try to make your point, which was very valid in this video, without criticizing other people's videos. I have seen each those 4 videos and you're taking a 2 second video clip to knock people down. My Sifu teaches of the efficiency in movement from tan sau, but you put a 2 second video clip of him doing teaching an application and then saying he is wrong. Keep up the good teaching just don't go trying to discredit good instructors to validate your instruction.

      I disagree. Each of the clips were of these sifus teaching to go away from the center when doing their tan sao. If you have further explanation for what they are doing I’m willing to listen.

      In those video clips you were showing, in at least two of those videos the Sifu is instructing the use of tan sau using yui ma (turning stance). In another video the Sifu is teaching how to train the wooden dummy form without the use of a wooden dummy. All I'm saying is that you are discrediting other sifus from a two second clip. If you are going to reference them then you should show the entire content so nothing is taken out of context. Your instruction is very valuable and you don't need to try to discredit other instructors to validate your instruction. All the best to you.

      @@EvyTumbao These sifus I’ve shown are doing something very different than what I teach. I am simply contrasting the difference. I am willing to blur their faces out but the point I am making is still very valid.

    Thank you for the advice. What lineage is your training from?

      We call our specific brand Dragon Family Wing Chun. It is a branch under the Leung Sheung lineage.

      @@sifuadamwilliss Thank you for your prompt answer. I've only recently begun studying WCGF, at a school that us associated with Francis Fong's instruction. They are using it as the base instruction for their Jun Fan/JKD program. What recommendations would you say a beginner in their first year of training should focus on?

    How is the TanSau useful against a Boxers hook?

    • @sifuadamwilliss
      @sifuadamwilliss  2 роки тому

      A tan sao shouldn’t be used against a hook or other round punches. Instead we use an elbow facing out position. See my video ua-cam.com/video/-YNrn5XbwBc/v-deo.html
