Thank you John for this in-depth tutorial. I realized just how much more sophisticated I could be making my edits. I am a recent switcher to Capture One Pro (after staying with Aperture 3 for waaaay too long, but getting a Sony a7R IV forced me to finally leave it) and am not happy with Photoshop CC 2018 performance, and had been thinking about Affinity Photo. Your video has convinced me to make the jump from Photoshop to Affinity as well!
Great tutorial! I’m Using Capture One and Affinity Photo and I’m loving them! The inpainting tool is awesome! A little tip: always use any clone layers right above the original layer, and curves and levels or any other adjustement layer on top of those to avoid affecting the relation values between clone layer and background layer. 🙂

Enjoyed the tutorial. Thanks! Just switched from Photoshop to Affinity Photo and transitioned from media pro to expression to Capture One 12. some learning curve involved... Now having trouble working through the process of getting prints to match what is done on monitor. Have calibrated monitor and paper/printer, but it's an exercise in frustration and patience. I'll try printing from Capture One next and look for a tutorial on color managed printing from Affinity and/or Capture one. Thanks again!

Great tutorial. I just bought Affinity Photo and will be done with the Adobe products.
Worth noting: the "small" but useful Capture One feature for temporarily resetting a single slider without having to use the Alt+Reset Tool control. Just click and hold the slider's _name._ It resets to its default position. Then let up on the mouse button and the slider returns to where you last set it. (If it's a tool with adjustments to more than one slider, the before/after view of the tool's effect requires the Alt+Reset Tool control.)
I would love a shortcut key like / in lightroom... I tried in settings but didn't found any way to do it
@@DiogoFilipeR No, there isn't one, and it seems to me Phase One has received many requests about it. But for whatever the reason, they just won't do it. They could make a better version: press "\" to reset all except cropping; press Shift+"\" to reset everything including cropping.
@@mikearst2940 or a way to program shortcuts with macros with your clicks! That would be cool 😄

The last couple of months I’ve been researching both capture one and affinity photo. Bought a new computer and not wanting to do the subscription base for adobe. This is just what I wanted to see between the compatibility between affinity and capture one.
Awesome tutorial thank you! I know this is a little dated however I am a latecomer to Affinity Photo and found this video super helpful and the additional tips towards the end were a nice addition. The detail on the GFX is incredible, it's nearly chalk and cheese from my X-Pro 3 and XT-3 look files.

What's most surprising with the move is just how much faster the UI is with Capture One. Not sure Adobe devs really have a clue what they're doing when it comes to Lightroom as it just has not sped up at all and they've acknowledged it's an issue.
Great easy to follow video, thanks! Affinity looks interesting. I was using LR + PS and I have replaced LR with C1. I am still looking for a PS replacement. I mainly do landscapes, astro and a bit of macro. I generally edits like you did in this video plus time lapse, HDR, foreground/background blending, stitching and focus stacking. Do you think Affinity is on par with PS in those areas?
Thank you! I know that PS/LR has some handy stitching and photo stacking feature. But honestly I’ve never used them that much as I tend to do most things manually with layers. So it is hard for me to comment specifically on Affinity’s tools that do similar things. I will say that you should download a trial and give it a go and see how it works for you though. And since you brought it up, I will try those features out as well. 👍
I left Adobe some time ago and have been using ON1 Photo raw (backed up by Affinity for complex jobs) but ON1 is proving unstable and slow on my iMac. For the last 2 weeks I've been using the Sony Express version of C1Pro and having got the hang of the basic RAW development I'm just starting to see how it works with Affinity. As a portrait shooter I love the way C1Pro renders RAW images, if the workflow fits then this is also my way ahead too. Thanks for the tips, Subscribed.

I really enjoyed your blog tutorial that included this video (that led me here). You really gave me some aha-moments. Not easy to find this gem due to google and youtube ranking by subscription numbers and views. But my search of "integrated C1 -> edit with Affinity workflow" got me here.
As a total newbie in Affinity, I got more than one light-bulb firing up from my old habit of doing 95% in C1 before exporting a TIFF and doing touch.-up completely "offline" in Gimp. Going Affinity mostly because of focus-bracketing and pano stitching (in addition to that celebrated "inpaint" ("content aware fill"-version). Your easy to follow workflow tutorial has saved me weeks of tinkering and pondering since unlike LR (with tons of tips) C1-expanded workflow are islands in a huge ocean of youtube (except from their own really good webinars
Demonstrating that one like me, that rarely have any signs of humanity in my images, can easily translate all your steps for my image type when being this well outlined.
I have one question though. Any specific reason to why you choose PSD instead of TIFF as chosen format for Affinity?
(PS - Oh yeah - those GFX files are pure butter! I say that as being stoked every day from how good my tiny and puny xt2/xe3-files looks and behaves in C1).

Why PSD? Until Capture One supports the ".afphoto" file extension for this type of workflow, I chose PSD over TIFF so I have the ability to use the layered photo in Affinity Photo, but also in Photoshop should I ever have to send the file off to high-level retouching professionals.

My workflow with Lightroom and Photoshop is similar and the one thing I'll miss is hitting "Command "S" from Photoshop and the image will be back in Lightroom with all my edits from Photoshop but I'm sure there is something similar with Capture One and Affinity Photo. I'm about to buy a Sony a7iii and I was going to bite the bullet and start paying the subscription for Lightroom CC so I can edit RAW images but I've decided to go with Capture One and Affinity Photo after watching this tutorial. I've been editing with CS6 and Lightroom 5 for a long time now because I shoot with a Sony a77ii and a Sony a99 and I haven't found a good reason to subscribe to their CC other than the fact that I no longer can edit RAW photos from newer cameras in Lightroom 5. I dabbled in Capture One for a few months because I got a Sony a6300 a year ago and I couldn't edit RAW images in Lightroom but that wasn't a big deal because it's my backup camera and I would have bought Lightroom 6 but I knew I'd eventually buy a Sony a7iii and it wouldn't be compatible so here I am having to decide where to go from here and the fact Affinity Photo is currently only $39 and the Capture One Pro for Sony is $109 I think I'll bite that bullet as opposed to a monthly subscription for Adobe CC. Thank you for the great tutorial and I look forward to seeing more of your work and tutorials.

Hi John, Thank you for this really great video. I've just settled into using Capture One 12 and Affinity Photo. I recently retired and have been spending most of my time learning Affinity Photo and wondered which was the best app to use for cataloguing. I have all the other popular apps; Lightroom, Luminar 3, ON1, but none of them seem to have the quality and workflow ease of Capture One Pro 12. I'll be watching out for your next videos with great interest. I still haven't decided which genre to focus on with my photography but I love your clean, fresh images on your website. I like all outdoor photography but at the moment I'm trying just about everything. Like you, I highly recommend both Affinity Photo and Capture One Pro 12. Thanks again.

Thank you for this - easy listening & nicely paced !!!! Like so many others I am using C1 & am seeking to get away from Ps & Lr - I go to Ps for focus stacking, panoramas & 'flaw' editing !! The edit brush looks interesting - but can you exert more control if you want to !!! I really fine tune any edits - to recreate natural replacement - does affinity offer the patch tool & similar !!!! How about it's performance with blending & merging ?

Actually holding a copy that matches what I see on the screen - so any input re your methods would be appreciated .I use a self calibrating eizo monitor & C1 is completely tuned to it - it's wonderful !!! None of the glitches & delays I had with Lr

Thank you! You are able to refine the blend mode a bit with the inpainting brush tool, but Affinity also offers tools just like photoshop (patch, clone, heal, etc.) so there are many options at your disposal.
Printing is something I used to do a lot of (even printed fine art reproductions for artists) and this is definitely going to be something I discuss in the future. : )

Thank you! When you save your image variant (either Tiff or PSD) in Affinity Photo, the file is automatically updated in your Capture One library.

You sure can! And it’s fine if you’re working one image at a time. But the benefit to working in C1 is the ability to copy and paste your edits/adjustments from one image to the next.

Great tutorial and super easy to follow! One quick question: when you finished with AP, do you File > Export > [file type] into a folder then re-open in CAP1?
Please refer to my updated video. You will want to save normally. With Tiff files AP will ask if you want to save with Affinity layers. With PSD files, you need to make sure you go into AP preferences and check the box related to Photoshop file compatibility.

With the inpainting brush I find that counterintuitively using a hard brush and being more careful in painting over the object to be removed, produces a better result.
In my experience you are mostly correct, but it all depends on what it is you’re using it on. I still find that a softer brush is good for grassy areas or tree leaves. A harder brush is good for hard surfaces. 👍

M.A. Stough Thank you, you will love C1. My channel is still young. But there is more content in the works (some BTS, some workflow, and some vlog). I’m not a fan of the subscription model, but if the software is fast and gives me the best quality I wouldn’t mind paying a fair subscription rate. My issue is Adobe is a greedy pig with bloated software that eats my computer resources like candy.
Hello John. Awesome video, awesome editing, awesome picture, and awesome knowledge of both tools. I have a doubt. How do you go back from Affinity to Capture One? Do you just save the file and then in Capture one you look for it in your library? Or do you save it in another file type? Or Affinity has a button to go back to C1? just like C1 let you edit it in Affinity? Thanks
Thanks, Juan Carlos! There are two ways to round-trip back to C1. But first I need to mention this: when you are in C1 and choose the "Edit In" option (and then choose Affinity Photo), C1 will create the file you choose (TIFF, JPG, PSD) and automatically add that file to your catalog next to the raw file. If you choose to edit a TIFF in Affinity Photo, pressing Command+S (Mac) will prompt Affinity Photo to ask if you want to save it with layers (hint: you do). When saved, the TIFF file will update in C1 automatically. PSD works the same, but you have to make sure you've selected the 'Enabled the "Save " over imported PSD files' setting in Affinity Photo Preferences. Once that is selected, anytime you open or edit a PSD from C1 and save it in Affinity, it will automatically update in C1. : ) Does this help?
@@JohnMagnoski thanks for the answer. It sure helped. I already try it with psd file. It worked just as you said. But to be sure. The layers made in C1 do not appear in affinity, right? (Using psd file) But the photo opens in AP as edited in C1. Now I make some layers in affinity, I save the file and it updates in C1. Now in C1 I see C1 layers, but not the Affinity layers, although the image has the changes made in AP. I am ok with that, but maybe I am doing something wrong, just want to be sure. And now... If I wanna go back again to Affinity, with new changes made in C1, do I have to do the edit with thing again and make a new variant that looses all the C1 layers? Because if I only go with open with, Affinity opens the psd file without the additional changes made in C1. I hope I made myself clear and Sorry for the long question 😐
@@juancarlosmiranda6830 - No problem! The layers from C1 will not appear in Affinity, nor will Affinity layers appear in C1. This is why I do the majority of my work in Capture One and then use Affinity to finish. If you want to continue work on the layered image from Affinity, make sure you use the "Open With" option for that specific image. This will open that image in Affinity with all of your layers intact.
I love how image finishing works for DaVinci Resolve with Lift, Gamma, Gain color correction and node style adjustments for video. Would you recommend either of these for a the most similar workflow into photography?
I’ve never played with DaVinci Resolve, but the color correction tools within Capture One are very robust. You are able to tweak Highlights, Midtones, and shadows as well as working with luminosity masking to go even further. If you haven’t already, grab a trial and take a look. 😉

Since C1 is customizable, it all depends on how you have your workspace setup. The default location for the color editor is in the color tab (the one with three overlapping rings/dots).

The color editor is it’s own tab separate from black and white. It has three sub tabs, advanced is in the middle, with skin last.

Well, maybe in the beginning when Affinity Photo first came out. But after I made this video I discovered there are quite a decent amount who use C1 and AP as part of their workflow. 😉

Nice video and great workflow. I have been on the fence for some time now. The ONLY thing stopping me is C1 has no option for cloud or for iOS. Now OS.13. I travel a lot and use an iPad Pro for a lot of editing within Lightroom these days. If they ever bring these features to the table then I would definitely make the switch.

Hi, I've been very happy to see this exemple of workflow with Capure One and Affinity Photo. I've recently acquired Capture One Pro 12 Fuji to work with my X-T20. And I see something strange. I edit my RAF file in Capture One. Then switch to Affinity with a PSD (16 bits) file, using the "Edit With" menu. But when I save my final PSD (with all the edits) in Affinity, I don't see the same pictures. Colors are "hazy"... Strange. When I export the JPG from Affinity, The Picture is perfect. Any Idea ?

I rarely use an automated HDR process since I’ve never felt the results were realistic. My process is more traditional and allows for greater control.
@@JohnMagnoski I just watched your video. At first glance I thought it was only on panoramas, so I didn't watch to the end earlier, but now I did and I'm grateful I did. I've been in love with capture one. Not so in love with affinity, yet.
funny fact, I've downloaded for testing like 3-4 times and I never gave much attention to it. I really liked, but I ended up not editing much on it when I had trial time because I had too much work to do and I didn't want to fight the learning curve. But now I have half switched to fuji and I'm angry at adobe processing on fuji files, so now I bought capture one 1 year subscription first and I'm really using it haha. Only using Lr for almost finished jobs already.

No problem! I use C1 to catalogue my work. And I create a catalogue for every project I photograph, archiving them on two different drives to keep things tidy and safe.

Why PSD? Until Capture One supports the ".afphoto" file extension for this type of workflow, I chose PSD over TIFF so I have the ability to use the layered photo in Affinity Photo, but also in Photoshop should I ever have to send the file off to high-level retouching professionals.

To be honest, it’s probably more of my ‘old’ habits than anything. But TIFFS we’re always larger file sizes compared to PSD. I haven’t done a proper comparison in years and since this question has come up before I should take a closer look and determine the pros and cons of Tiff. 😉

I Have been using both the software for my last few photo editing, Capture pro seems pretty good while affinity photo gives me a little head ache. The reason is when i transfer my photo to affinity photo from capture one for further editing and when I finally save in jpeg format, The output colour seems quite different from what i saw in the software. How can i get the same colour For jpeg output.

As long as you edit them as either a TIFF or PSD (edit with command )in C1and have made sure that Affinity preferences are set so that you can save the file natively. Then you can export from C1 to any file format you wish.

How do you guys have clean black and white images or videos? Are there some principles to follow? I see this with Sean Tucker as well.
The secret to good black and white is making sure to mix your channels and then adding in enough contrast. You want the black levels almost clipped. I should do a video on that as well. Thanks!

Great video, but after you are done in Affinity Photo, how do you get it back into Capture 1 Pro? I was watching the video to find out how you "closed the loop", but you didn't really cover it.
Thanks for your comment and question! There is no additional work to get the file back into Capture One - it's automatic. In my workflow, I opt to work with the PSD format still so when I save the file, the PSD data gets updated automatically in Capture One. Very similar to how LR works. I can then access that PSD file any time in C1 and do additional work within C1 or by choosing to re-open that file in my editor.

I am a beginner who just started using Affinity Photo instead of Photoshop CS6. I love it so much already. I would like to have a dedicated library manager/raw processor like Lightroom, Capture One or Luminar. But I’m on a budget, it doesn’t really make sense to buy more software after AP. And to be honest AP’s Raw processor is more than enough for me at this point (even though it is a bit small and simplistic, much like Photoshop’s Camera Raw).
Affinity Photo is awesome. I just wish they had a DAM like Adobe Bridge.
@@JohnMagnoski . Yeah. I'm currently using the free Lightroom trial and when is is over I'll try Capture One and Exposure X5, just to try all the options that I can't afford right now. But the trials are free so why not? Experimenting with new software is fun and those programs have both good DAM and Raw processors.
When I have spent those trials, I am pretty sure use Adobe Bridge (since it's completely free) like I did with Photoshop CS6. It unfortunately does not help with batch editing, but since I only really do one photo at a time that doesn't bother me. I just enjoy the organisation feature Bridge has.
As an amateur efficiency is only really a goal when it serves the ultimate goal of having fun. So experimentation with free software and trials is only an advantage.
I’m a fan of using free/trial software. It’s how I fell in love with Affinity Photo. In fact, think it’s 50% off right now. Anyway, enjoy playing with different software. Learning new things makes photography so enjoyable. 👍

good video. However the edits you did in Affinity could have been done easily in C1 (e.g. Healing layer, Level adjustments for black/white points, Luminosity Masks for dodge & burning, Radial mask layer for the solar flare effect)
Thank you! They sure could have. But I much prefer the inpainting brush tool in Affinity to the clone/heal tool in C1 and also to use my overlays to add the atmospheric drama. I will sometimes use luminosity masks in C1 for “dodging and burning”.

I know how you feel. Made the full switch almost 3 years ago. Always used both C1 and PS. The benefit of this route is less cost. Mastering... I doubt I’ll ever claim that. 😉
It seems to me that all you did in Affinity you coukd have done in Capture One as well? ( Possible exception perhaps removing the lamp posts)

what does that keystone tool do?
Thanks for your question! The keystone tool allows you to adjust your vertical and horizontal planes in the image. This is handy when photographing architecture (or anything really) where you need your vertical and/or horizontal lines to be straight.
is capture one more all inclusive than affinity if you had to pick one?
You really can’t compare them in that way. C1 would be more similar to Lightroom as it has a catalog/database and Affinity is like more like Photoshop.
C1 and Affinity are great companion programs. But if I had to only use one, it would be Capture One as it processes raw files better than anything Ive used.
I was recently watching a tutorial by “Rich Baum” called “Demystifying Twilight Photography”. He uses light room and photoshop, to make night scene shots of homes by using various techniques with the sky lighting and with water illumination in the pools.
What’s the possibility of doing a tutorial on something like that with Capture One & Affinity? I’m trying to get into Real estate photography, and would really like to know how to offer this!

When I click "Edit with > Affinity Photo" I have more options but not the PSD one...why is that? I'm using Capture One 20 Express and the latest Photo version.
Andre, I had made an update to this workflow since I had encountered some issues using PSD. ua-cam.com/video/NIyiRZwDp08/v-deo.html I’ve been using TIFF and saving those TIFFS with layers in Affinity Photo for maximum compatibility between the two programs.

I agree. When you say you just save it and it's back in capture one pro I'm kind of stuck. Right now when I hit save it asks if I want to save with layers or save as and if I choose save as it wants to save it as an affinity photo file. I'm not sure how to round trip it back and save my changes into capture one pro. I know you said you would do a video but could you please explain here? Thanks
I went ahead and told it to save as layers and that seemed to work. I'm hoping that's the correct workflow and answer to this. it did in fact update the image in capture one. It is kind of misleading in that save as layers typically I think of like a PSD file in Photoshop and not the Tiff that you are working with. Thanks for the video

Depending on what camera you’re using, yes. Affinity Photo’s raw processing isn’t as good as Capture One’s. But if you’re looking for one inexpensive program to do all the heavy lifting, AP could work. It’s just not the best for a raw workflow since there’s now DAM like Adobe Bridge.
I would to do the switch to C1 and Affinity, main issue is that I'm broke and I use my sister's student acc on Adobe for editing :( As a fuji shooter, I feel like I insult myself doing it just because it doesn't cost me anything *again, broke*
As a father of 9 and the only income-earner in my home, I can fully understand "broke". ; ) With that said, don't forget that the Fujifilm version of C1 is Free (see affiliate link in my description). But also, until the end of August, the Pro version is 50% off (again, see link above). And Affinity Photo is only $50. If photography is your passion and you're wanting to grow, may I suggest cutting off any non-essential services (like online video streaming) or purchases and invest that money in quality software instead? You'll be surprised at how quickly you can grow. If you have a good camera, which anything made in the last 10 years is, then investing in good software is a must. You can do it! : )
Being broke is no joke...but sadly, it goes hand in hand with being an artist. Photographers are artists!

Capture One is great for doing most of your edits and archiving. If you do very little retouching work, then you can do everything you need in Capture One Pro. : )
Affinity Photo is just like photoshop, so it is perfect for doing everything as well as final retouching work. But it does not have a way to catalog and archive your images like Capture One. So for me, this is why I use two programs.
Actually, I use more than two to work on my images. It just depends on what my intent is for the final image. For the majority of my work, it is done in Capture One Pro and Affinity Photo.

This could be the dumbest question of the day, but can you say what the main reason for a Capture One-Affinity Photo workflow is? I’ll admit that I don’t know anything about Affinity Photo. What are some of the main things that Affinity Photo does that has led you to this workflow?

The main reason I switched to C1 was the image quality I got out of my images (in less time_ in comparison to Lightroom, but I was still using Photoshop for final edits. When Affinity photo first came out I purchased it mainly out of curiosity and because I knew they were going to have a full functioning version for the iPad, which I also own and use on occasion. After using their program, I fell in love with it more and more and started using PS less and less until it didn't make any financial sense to keep my subscription with Adobe. The final straw, however, is the fact that both C1 and Affinity run SOOOO much faster in comparison to the Adobe products. My overall image quality has increased as wall as my efficiency in delivering final edits to my clients quickly.

I watch all types of Capture One videos and am an avid user and avid learner. I’m amazed at how many tools it has to create really excellent photos. I have never come across a “Capture One-Photoshop Workflow” video. So when I saw a “Capture One-Affinity Photo Workflow” video, I got curious - what does this program do for a photographer that Capture One more or less does by itself. Maybe lots of people finish editing in Photoshop and it just hasn’t hit my consciousness. So asked another way, what are the kinds of things that Capture One doesn’t do well enough (or can’t do at all) that leads someone to finish editing in either PS or AF?
@@emmgeevideo Got it! Well, to be honest - C1 does the majority of the heavy lifting for me as I mention in my video (it has layers so I can do almost everything). Affinity is where I finish (ie. retouch) and will use layers to do additional dodging and burning, but that can be done in C1 as well. I prefer retouching in Affinity. While C1 has a decent clone tool, it does not match what can be done for retouching in either PS or Affinity Photo.
My workflow a few years ago looked like this:
Import into Lightroom, choose favorite images, adjust images to taste, export to PS for layered editing with luminosity masking (using Lumenzia action panel), dodge & burn, retouching, save as PSD to round-trip back to LR for cataloging and export.
Now my workflow is primarily confined to C1 (which is SO much faster) and round-tripping through Affinity photo primarily for retouching and finishing my work.
John Magnoski Thanks! I’ve never been proficient in PS and was never that proficient with LR. So when I switched to C1, I was in heaven. It didn’t occur to me that something else would be useful after using C1. Watching your video I see that the retouching tools were pretty cool. What about color editing. Although C1’s color editor and RGB curves are powerful, sometimes I don’t feel they can do what I need.
Here’s an example: I took some casual photos of a group in a room where there were a lot of video monitors. During post-production I realized how much blue light was in the room. As I toned down the blue, a lot of yellow appeared. I could have done a lot of masking but these weren’t studio photos and no one was paying me for them. I found myself wishing I had a more versatile color editor. Would AP help with that?

The best way to deal with that is with various mask tools. Depending on the particular look you're after, I would either use C1 with masks, or Affinity (or a combination of both). : )
