LEGO Keep Remaking Harry Potter Sets... Here's Why

  • Have you noticed that LEGO Harry Potter keep remaking the same sets over and over again? It's becoming very frustrating for LEGO collectors, so I thought I would take a look at why LEGO keep doing this, and what this means for the future of LEGO Harry Potter. The most recent example of a set that's been remade, is LEGO Harry Potter Hagrid's Hut - Can you believe it's been remade FIVE times?!

    A few weeks ago I randomly decided to check what LEGO's been up to - and imagine my surprise when I realized a new multiple-years journey is about to start in March, and I'm in a perfect position to jump on board. And unlike back when I was a kid, I won't have to choose what I want most anymore - I can buy whole waves if I'd like to. And LEGO actually wants me to do so - Hogwarts sets are modular, Forbidden Forest sets are modular, Diagon Alley sets are modular - so the point about expecting customers to come back for more is really spot on. I don't mind the remakes - doesn't matter to me how many iterations Hagrid's Hut had before, if I never got one back in the day. And if it wasn't for that my only shot at getting one would be buying from local "collectors" at 3 times the retail price. In a way, I even find it advantageous that I don't own the old sets so I can justify getting pretty much anything. Besides, they are an improvement over what LEGO did before - Ford Anglia can have two minifigs side by side, Hagrid's Hut is enclosed etc. I find some of the sets like the Owlery a bit small and underwhelming, but this is a necessary tradeoff for not making every set cost $500. Besides, putting together a series of sets over time, watching reviews and such is a more engaging experience than to get a single huge set, build it - and then what? Not to mention it's a good decision to start fresh with a cheaper wave to get people hooked - I understand the ones that come later this year will be mostly bigger and more expensive ones. And I don't mind the small choice of themes at all - in fact, I'm very happy with the new wave's focus being Chamber of Secrets and Philosopher's Stone; everything that happened after (later books especially) is no longer a wholesome fairy tale, which is what I value HP for - so I have no need for things like Azkaban or Malfoy Manor.

      Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and thought provoking comment! I completely agree and think that LEGO super fans and collectors just expect too much. The sets we have are brilliant and the amount of time and effort that goes into creating them is taken for granted!

      You put my thoughts into words really well (maybe with exception on the books to include - I found it fun until book 4, so I’m happy to get sets from book 1-4, but will probably get sets from later books as well because of the modular/collectible factor!).
      I’ve had most of the books 1 and 2 sets back from 2001 release, and jumping in last year it was overwhelming as many sets were already retired, so I just got a few sets that I didn’t already have from the old sets - like thestral carriage or the dragon from the triwizard tournament - but seeing a fresh start now got me really excited to collect Hogwarts all over again 20 years later! Especially since Lego improved so much on the designs!

    I wish Lego could, once every couple years, bring back some old retired sets. Imagine, for example, if they re-released that Stranger Things one for the 5th season's release? That would be awesome. Of course a new ST set would be cool, but I think bringing back some sets from time to time is also really nice. At least they wouldn't go for 5x more money on Bricklink...

    I completely agree with you. My family just got into Lego this year, and we are in a position to buy some sets. Lego Harry Potter is my wife's favorite theme and some of the retired sets are extremely expensive on resale. I'm happy they are redoing some of the sets, but I understand it can be annoying or boring for people who already have those sets.

      Yeah, I’m in the same boat. It’s all new to me, and I’m able to get everything I want through the remakes. I have no desire to go and buy older sets. Pretty confident they’ll all be remade eventually!

    well yeah, at the end of the day it's a toy aimed at kids. the "collectors" Lego targets by giving them 18+ ultra detailed sets which usually have a very long shelf life. as a long time Lego fan, you don't need to collect everything, it's much more fun to pick out sets you actually like and purchase them. I never really understood people that wanted to own every set out of a particular line, I lowkey think it's a bit obsessive. I never understood people purchasing 5+ big sets at once as an adult.
    one of the best alternative examples is the star wars x-wing, there's pretty much a version of it at all times but that's because it's one of the most recognized vehicles in the franchise.

    • @brickodan
      @brickodan  3 місяці тому

      Spot on. I mean people are free to purchase however many sets they like, but I just don’t like the general message on UA-cam of Adult LEGO fans moaning about items being remakes as if they are LEGO’s most important audience!

    The question is what you collect. "Owning every set from year x to y" is just stupid in my opinion. You end up buying for example minifigure series figures you would actually not want for free, If it wasn´t about competing the line. I want a perfect representation of the stuff I truely love. I buy only sets that are perfect or close to perfection, so I can fix the last details. An example would be the minifigure scale batman tumbler. I got custom printed elements to replace those cheap stickers, got the 2 light bluish grey elements in black and replaced the brown technic axle. Now it is pure awesomeness and stands surrounded in a display with the (at least in my opinion) best possible versions of all the villains (lots from the lego batman movie, but with details like the old printed coin element, face and hair piece for two face for example). Harry Potter was never good enough for me to start buyng whole sets. The mirror in the first great hall was a sticker and I can´t print metallic colours. So It would never been perfect. I got the best minigifures of teachers and students and upgraded them, when a better piece came out, until now. Now I got Hagrids hut. It is gorgeous and from the first movie, which I like most, I can replace the stickers and use the new mould for a wooden door.... It will be brilliant. The boat house is also perfect. Nothing to change about it. The new potion class room is gorgeous and the stickers replacable. The new great hall is "meh" in my opinion, but at least a solid foundation for a MOC on the outside and I am pretty sure this is the best Lego can do. I´ll fix the inside. That way I do not spend as much and save space. I am also really happy with everything I own.

      This is the way to do it! I think collectors of HP sets have started to realise that collecting everything isn’t really very sensible, and it’s best to just go with what you love. I also picked up Hagrid’s Hut as it’s by far the best version and I really like it on display. Thanks for commenting!

    I like how in depth you went with this. Was such an interesting watch that I never really thought about. So now you mention it, it does seem that targeting a broader audience over and over again is the main goal. And I don't think we've seen anything yet! The rest is still to come!

    • @brickodan

    Used to have quite a big collection with PS and CS. And then they changed the skin tone from yellow to pink. Now that was frustrating. Had the clock tower and the Knight bus from PoA and the dragon challenge from GoF. But I didn’t want a double set of every character. I got frustrated of that (and became like teenager or so). So I just stopped, even when new movies got released.

    • @brickodan

      Ouch. That’s a point I did want to discus. The “evolution” of mini-figs means that there was a “need” to refresh everything with the new style ones. I do think the new style ones look cooler but I’d be extremely frustrated if I was in your position. Thanks for commenting.

    I was ok the first few waves since I didn’t get many of the older Harry Potter sets, but for me it’s a lot cheaper to just buy things we’ve never gotten in Lego before, like the Boathouse or Drumstrang ship. I like the theme, but I can at least be reasonable and not buy repeats like the second Hogwarts Express or Hagrid’s Hut.

      @brickodan  3 місяці тому

      Yeah, that’s exactly how it’s designed to work I think. Always something remade to bring in new customers. Over time and once these customers have got everything they want, it slows down and they become more selective with purchases. Bet LEGO’s customer churn rate is impressive!

      It is a bizarre question to me. Lego sees a new generation of kids every 5 years or so. Of course they're going to be remaking sets for these new fans to enjoy. It's strange to me to think the idea that this might make it repetitive for collectors to buy all the sets is even considered.

    I actually like remakes: atleast people that couldn't have the set back in the day can now. I would love, for example, to see a remake of the old Modular Building Palace Cinema: it looks a little outdated, and, now that we have that piece in the Lego Polaroid Camera Set that has the photos printed on (you know what I'm talking about right? Piece n°6468167), I think Lego could use a similar one if not the same as the Movie Theater's screen, so there could be some images of Popular movies like Endgame in Lego form printed on them so it looks like the lego people are watching a movie

      Thank you, and you’re absolutely right. Sometimes the LEGO creator space is a bit out of touch, and that includes the LAN creator’s too. Maybe that just comes from having access to a few too many sets, and losing sight of money vs what new customers and every day LEGO fans actually want. I just reviewed the new remake of Hagrids Hut, and it’s so brilliantly made. It clearly took hours of research, thought and development , and I just don’t see why anyone would feel the need to moan about that. If you don’t like remakes, don’t buy them!

    Lego, except maybe some of the 18+ range, are not targeted at collectors. They are designed to created brand loyalty with kids. The kids who get Harry Potter Lego while 5-8 years old are supposed to get Lego Harry Potter sets whent hey are 18-20. Lego wants to make money, so they have to raise prices. Easiest way to do that is to just remake the product. As a side effect, they can improve (though they sometimes fail at that).
    Also, especially in licensed merch, there is only so many locations and characters. If they could do every location only once, they probably would not have made a Hogwarts set until the 2010s (banking of the finale of the movie franchise), instead of dropping set 4709 in the early 2000s. Would have sucked to be a Harry Potter Lego fan and not be able to buy the castle :D

    The problem is that the sets are getting worse. There are so many alternative brick brands out there. In Germany they are very well known in the community. You can get 3000+ part sets for like 150€ and the quality is actually better than Legos (better color-consistency, more prints etc.)

    • @rosemarie9956
      @rosemarie9956 Місяць тому

      @@brickodanI don’t think they are getting worse at all BUT just appealing to different people. For example the new DA sets will appeal mostly to a younger person and perhaps to someone who has less display space. I still think the UCS version is so much better but I can see the appeal of these smaller individual sets. Same for the newer great hall set. This will appeal to many because it does look great but again I prefer the interiors of the 2018 version. So as an AFOL when I see these sets I simply get ideas to modify my sets or do a full MOC. I do think I bought too much of the last wave however (2022 - 2023) so it is easy to get caught up in it all. I am much more thoughtful about what I purchase now with the HP theme. Still love seeing all the new stuff but not buying it all.
