    Kale is fun to grow they are super cold resistant I have a video on my channel showing just how hardy they are and the plants were frozen solid and they are still alive, make sure you mulch it well in cold areas, I use a 5-5-5 Dr.earth organic fertilizer it works great I'll do a update soon on how they are doing.

    I'm from the Netherlands and for us kale mash, is a very popular hearty winyterdish. We know the kale is even tastier after it's been through frost. This is the climate it is used to, and because it has such a long growing season people always had kale in their yards, so much so in england people's yards would actually be called "kale yards". They needed those vitamins in the time of year other produce was scarce.
    The way we eat it is cooked with and mashed in a potatomash (milk and butter) with fried cured baconbits and smoked sausage. All the things a family would have around preserved in winter. It's special bitter-ish flavor works best with these things. Its even a favorite for kids.

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie 7 років тому

      Oh and we lso freeze it, cut up in a bag it lasts very well that way too. So you can have it all year round after a glut harvest.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

      Given the right environment, you can definitely grow Kale in the hotter months. This makes sense. The Kale you plant in the spring isn't simply cut down in July and thrown away. Most healthy plants will grow right through summer, then into fall, and depending on where you live, right into the next year!

    I started growing a jale plant from seed 3 years ago, and it has not made hand- sized leaves yet. It is probably around 8-10 inches high and its leaves have not been damaged by insects or disease, but they are still only 2-3 inches long and 1.5 in wide. Any idea why this might be? Its been kept inside until recently.

    Thank you for detailed info.
    My experience: I saved seeds from a curly kale that survived -30C and 7 months of pure winter, crop from those seeds was a disaster. 2016, I did grow a few from seeds and a flat mixed with all verities, they turned out bitter by July/August, I left them in ground to see if they pop up in May or not. I love curly kale and use them in my favorite salad mix.
    Question: Have you ever tried cooking kale as replacement for mustard green (saraoon ka saag) these days most of South Asian are using broccoli raab leaves for saag purée.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  7 років тому

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

      Most definitely! Harvest the outer (lower leaves) first, always leaving at least 20-25% of the leaves on the plant intact. Kale grows from the inside out, so it is always producing new shoots and leave for you to harvest! That's why you can grow it for 2+ years in a row!

    Nice video. Last yr I grew Kale in the early spring time for first time and had good success. This yr, I tried to grow it late fall and no luck. Even after almost 2 months the plants look like same size as when I transplanted them. I did use organic vegetable fertilizer in my soil. I am growing these in raised beds as well as 5-gallon buckets. Not sure what could be wrong. Maybe it is every day rain that we having in northern CA this yr.
