That Bosendorfer sounds just about perfect for this music. What a thoroughly intelligent and musical performance. World class in every way.
For one-and-a-half hours, life became perfectly beautiful. I agree with Jaick Koo that such musicianship is genius. Thank you, Sir András Schiff.
Fantastic, how respectul of the public for not applauding immediately after the end of the Arietta, and let him have that moment of silence.
At least 90% of the audience wasn't convinced it was the end of the sonata. The remaining 10% were respectful.
Yes. I saw him perform the same 2 pieces in a program at Carnegie Hall. The very second he finished the last note of the Beethoven, with his hands still on the keyboard, some rude guy screamed out 'bravo' just to be the first. Sir Andras was clearly disturbed, and in the next piece he played, he removed his hands from the keyboard at the end very demonstratively to made a point.

Reminds me of a concert pianist who once said: "Ignorant people think Schubert is a composer for maidens; in reality he is a Titan".
The joyful final allegretto of the D960, written while he knew that life was abandoning him, is one of the most poignant pieces of music I know of.

One of Maestro András Schiff’s performances I have enjoyed the most. Maybe it’s not fair to say it is the most beautiful Schubert I have heard but, at least, it feels so now. Sober, intelligent, and exquisite rendition of this sonata. Intimate, delicate, and sublime touch and phrasing: poetic lyricism, the nuances of a true artist. Coherent and eloquent dialogue of voices, perfect tempos. Few musicians understand Schubert’s music this well. Regarding Beethoven’s sonata 32, what to say? This is the way Beethoven should always be interpreted. I'm so bored with hearing pianists playing Beethoven as if his music is only about violent (hammer) Fortes and extreme contrasts (Maestro Brendel's Fortes are not hammer-like but Anvil-like Fortes I have to say with all due respect). Maestro Schiff clearly shows us how interesting and musical Beethoven’s music is: every single note speaks, every single one of them is in its right place. His encore pieces confirm that what we heard before was not the result of chance... we are before one of the greatest, without a doubt. With his Bach interpretation, he seems to be telling the audience: “This is the secret of my Mastery”... It’s what I always say: those who study Bach’s music as well as he has, are rewarded with such exceptional musical wisdom. His technique, obviously the result of patience, discipline, and intelligence. A memorable recital. Bravo Maestro Schiff!!!
I've listened to (my favourite composer) Schubert's B flat sonata, literally many hundred times, over the last 50 years, and once heard Rubinstein (in his mid eighties) play it live. This is the performance (aided by modern technology) I've been seeking all those years. Previous front runners (for me) were Lupu, Brendel and Rubinstein, all of them among the few who appeared to understand Schubert's music. I heard nuances in this performance that I have not registered before. I agree that the tempos, touch and phrasing (etc.) were as you describe them. I'm left with the belief that no pianist has understood this piece as well as Schiff does. His technique is amazing, and he makes it all look simple. (I think there was a wrong (mis-struck) note at 41.27, btw - if there was, it only proves he is human; after all, he had been playing in live performance continuously for nearly three quarters of an hour.)

I am a humble listener but I feel that he always do magic to convert piano into an orchestra, voice, other instruments whatever he imagines. He is communicating with the composers which I listen. He is a genius. I joined a small event that he appeared in New York hosted by WQXR, I heard him playing right behind him, but I did not such a impression at that time. However, the more I listen his playing, the more I get fascinated.
And what is so wrong the piano sounding like a piano?

I love how there was such a long pause after the Beethoven was over. It really helps have the music soak in before the inevitable thunderous applause :) it should be the norm for pieces of such character!
Schiff is one of the greatest pianists of the century, it's not an understatement. His interpretations are so profoundly well researched, he looks at copies of the original manuscripts and reads ancient correspondences to find the composers most authentic intentions. He played each of the WTC books in full concert, consecutively with almost perfect execution. You won't hear him playing Liszt, Rach, Prokofiev, he seems very specific in his tastes: he knows all the German masters from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, to Schubert, literally every composition they ever wrote. Quite a lot of Scarlatti and Hadyn as well.
Liszt in particular is anathema to the old boy but not having heard him explain why I can only speculate. Perhaps he judges them lacking in gravitas to the point of showy vulgarity? It's fascinating to hear one genius slagging off another.

Well said. He is the welcome opposite of some publicity-engineered showmen who will play anything that enables them to show off their technique but do not have an ounce of taste or music understanding. (Not naming names.)

Just as pianists are a breed apart among musicians who play an instrument, so are we, the Boesendorfer aficionados, a breed apart among listeners. Here ' apart ' doesn't mean better or worse - it just means different .
And what a way to celebrate that difference.
I have long loved Sir Andras ' Bach interpretations but his Schubert opened up new doors for me, so lyrical and contained . What I feel about his Beethoven, others have said so well.
So I will just second their appreciations.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful music, I shall be coming back to it again and again.
Bosendorfers are superior pianos
The second mvt from D. 959 was absolutely unreal
I heard Schiff play the Arietta while visiting Bonn a few years ago. God, I trembled from the emotion, it was embarrassing.
For those with comments about tone, I would just like to observe that there are many operations at work between Maestro Schiff's sound in this concert and our ears. This is why I find live music so vital, and so magical. I have never seen him play, but I imagine that all the things I love in this video despite its being compressed and posted to youtube, processed through my subpar headphones, etc., are in even greater abundance in the concert hall. What a gift to bear witness to even a fraction of Schiff's genius. Thank you to the poster for this offering!
The tone is made tinny by the transit between piano and our computer screens - you can't just suddenly make a concert grand sound "tinny", except through recordings and subsequent methods of reproduction.
Andras Schiff is a pure genious, what can be said more ? And it is a real pleasure to hear another piano than a Steinway, the Bösendorfer gives a woody sound, softer than a Steinway or a Yamaha or a Kawai.
There are Yamahas (newer series) that sound somewhat like them because Yamaha is using some of the same material sourcing as Bosendorfer now. This is a 280VC, my favorite piano. And note, it has 88 keys. It's not like the Imperial that has 97 and is a half foot longer.
Petrof pianos are also lovely if you like the sound of this one. :)
Such a complete artist. Many aspects to praise and ponder about, but one in particular I find myself thoroughly enjoying while listening to this recital is... Well, let me put it simply like this: Maître Schiff, one of the finest grammarians I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.
Very well put. Sir András is indeed the consummate musical grammarian. A major aspect of his pianism is that he is able to give us precisely what the composer put down on the written page without dampening (or exploiting) the emotional and intellectual contents of the piece. In doing so he takes a musical score and creates an experience which is more than the sum of the parts, which is in itself work of Art.
What an exquisite musicianship!
How beautifully composed manner even at the fiercest passages, he's clearly not from the motion&emotion generation of pianists!

Schiff never misses a repeat. He states that the balance of the whole piece gets distorted if we skip repeats

Enjoyed all of this concert, more than I can say. What I love so much about Schiff’s music-making is his ability to listen to himself, to the sounds coming from the piano. Eyes closed, he listens. And this is very telling for those of us who try to really listen too. Quite wonderful.

This is András Schiffs choice, I respect it, but I myself find the sound of the Böserdorfer somewhat to dark and a bit "echoing", not with the clarity of a Steinway. But perhaps I am misled, always listening to Steinway?
@@staffanolofsson8201 : Perhaps we’ve all been misled, being so accustomed to the ubiquitous Steinway! The Bösendorfer (note the spelling, n instead of r) is an acquired taste, and I love it now. It is part of Schiff’s attempt to more closely approximate period instruments, and it is glorious. Perhaps you will have heard Schiff speaking on UA-cam about the very thick bass strings on a Steinway, and the consequent unpleasantly heavy bass? (Not everyone agrees with him, of course!)

In this recording the treble sounds brittle and short - common in Bösendorfer pianos. The bass is warm but a little unbalanced with the higher notes. It is not a bad sound, but it would not be for me. Personally prefer the Shigeru Kawai concert grand sound - strong and sustaining treble without harshness, similar big resonant bass to the Bösendorfer, but tonally in-between Steinway and Bösendorfer.
He doesn’t sound too bad on a Frank Brodmann either.

Beautiful and dreamy Herr Schubert. Truly god sent genius. Schubert felt inadequate and looked up to Beethoven and see how he can please him with his compositions. Unbeknownst to him, in my opinion Franz surpassed Ludwig with over 1,500 most exquisite music ever created.

I know comparisons are odious but this is meant as a compliment. His playing of these two last sonatas of Schubert and Beethoven reminded me of Wilhelm Kempff at his best.

The Schubert is fantastic. Of course I still love Richter's recording, but this is live and Schiff plays with so much clarity here, it's unbelievably good. Maybe the piano has something to do with that, as it's not the standard Steinway D. Also great camera work.

@@georgehand7027 : You made me laugh with “He schleps it around.” He does indeed, because it’s his own piano and he loves it dearly. Kein Steinweg because of its heavier bass, but when someone voices the Steinway well (as at Wigmore Hall) he happily plays it. It is actually Bösendorfer; not “Boesendorfer” - Americans seem to enjoy misspelling Germanic languages. :)
@@sheilanovitz8578 Kein umlaut on mein keyboard, hence Boesendorfer. For a seemingly normal person, I have a large collection of "original instrument" piano recordings. They do make a difference. Schiff has done a two cd Diabelli using both. Interesting. Only in the last few years was I talked into the Richter and it's definitely up there at that level where rankings become invidious.

Have you heard Schiff’s fairly recent recording of the Brahms concerti on an old instrument (I forget which one!) with smaller orchestra? Marvellous. And yes, I’ve heard the 2 CD Diabelli recordings. For me, the difference is clear, but each person hears differently. 🤗 Have just looked it up: Schiff played the Brahms concerti on a Blüthner Grand piano built around 1859.
@@sheilanovitz8578 Bluethner. I own the Brahms. The Bluethner is very long, the bass strings are not over strung. I tend to think of Brahms as "modern" piano, but even in modern piano zeit, not everything is Steinway and even then not all Steinways are voiced in the same way. I had a piano technician friend years ago who had a Bluethner and it had a unique (for me) sound. He also had a Mason and Hamlin concert grand a foot longer than normal (one of three they made): big sound! I don't play, BTW, but something about the sound of early pianos grabbed me early on. I don't consider early/modern to be a dogma choice that must be made one way or the other.

Schiff plays in a most subdued and precise manner, which is certainly attractive though without extreme fireworks. Most relaxing to the point even where audience snoring might disturb the sound even more than coughing would. I wonder how he would play Shostakovich and Schnittke and other more modern composers?
His political activism is extremely attractive as he frequently has spoken out against the racism of the neofascists. Many in his position stay silent, but he has not. How many today, as before, defend the Roma? Not too many... How many stand up to today’s thugs?

This is definitely one of the greatest recitals I‘ve ever heard in my life. Sir Andras is playing Schubert‘s and Beethoven‘s last Piano Sonatas. Schubert and Beethoven are the main persons of this evening, rather than Sir Andras Schiff and that makes a big difference. On his own Bösendorfer - this feels like the best piano one can imagine.
And then there is the seconds of silence after the Beethoven Sonata. Truly magical.

I have read here, that this piano is Mstro.'s Schiff's personal Imperial Grand Piano, made out of cherry wood out of trees of Antonin Chekov's cherry orchards. In an effort to accomodate the out-do personality of the region.

we've all so be conditioned to appreciate the Steinway Grand. To me the Boesendorffer is a newbie and a would-be. However it'll help to keep Steinway on its toes.

I like also the Bösendorfer piano ( what a funny name) but how would it sound when the Barenboim piano technology would be used. It happens that an older piano technology as used for the List's piano is simply better than anything produced later. Great Barenboim knew it and got one produced for him with this superior old technology by a specialist.
