"Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed" - I ask myself the same thing everyday
You have the same profile as my friend Presidential on Skype :3
Cool haha! ^-^
Lol ^~^
i think you're overjoyed
Yes! MCRmy Unite! Especially on this sad day.....
This song influence me to get out of my house in 2009 get rid of all the drama in my life, move to another city and be on my own, had to work hard and study. I learned hunger, struggle and most of all desperation but made me a better man.
What did you end up doing? What did you study/work at?
I want to do so when I'm old enough. I have good friends here and my cousins are the best, but I can't stand living in the same house as my parents anymore. I guess I'll stay until I can take my little sister out of there. My parents aren't abusive or anything like that. They're so just stupid it actually ends up harming us, but I know they don't mean it. How did you do it, btw?
Devil's Offspring I studied International Relations and now I am a Recruitment Manager at the one of the best agencies in the country.
Will ll-// what do you mean stupid? I’ ve just let them know that I was leaving for MY OWN GOOD.
Dude. Congrats. That's really amazing. 🙌💗
Some people would say that this song is too long. I say it's too short.

I recommended this song to a friend who said they wanted to give green day a listen and he said "A 11 MINUTE SONG. SCREW THAT"
I could literally listen to an hour long song of green day. Such good melodies.
Very correct my friend

This is one of the best goddamn songs. I agree.

How isn't this song more popular... It's an actual masterpiece
It is popular
@@mysteryperson1958 Didn't know that at the time
Was greendays highest song in new zealands rock 2000. Number 200 so yea its popular
Whoever says Green Day is shit needs to listen to this song. It has such depth and lots and lots of musical genius behind it.
This is great, however Queens Bohemian Rapsody can never beaten, please listen that masterpiece
@@nolanakers1871 he didn't say anything about being boen in the wrong generation. He said that whoever calls Green Day shit should listen to this song. He's basically praising the song and telling haters to listen to it, not complaining about being born in the wrong generation.
EDIT: Lol I said boen
In my opinion, the only band besides Green Day that I could call my favorite is Nirvana.
Risto Laukkanen its a masterpiece but this one too
Wait? There’s people who say that?
It's like the Bohemian Rhapsody of (pop) punk
damn yes
Stylistically yes. But in terms of sound isn't 21st century breakdown like bohemian rhapsody.
ok get that pop out of there and then you got it, this shit isnt pop, pop is the horseshit you hear on the radio these days ok there is a fucking difference
+Dylkill This is Pop Punk though. I don't mean to be a punk elitist or anything but listen to Black Flag's Damaged or Rudimentary Peni's Death Church and you'll hear that there's a difference between Punk and Pop Punk.
so true

Yeah it is. But being realistic, I know something's wrong with me.
Song could have very well ended at 5:21, but they went on to add the second half, and make it a masterpiece.
the only drawback is the length...
Jeremy Dus I like the length
This was one of many masterpieces of the time. If you're a fan of Epics like this, I implore you to check out "The Willing Well" series by Coheed and Cambria. It's fantastic as well. There's 4 of them. Aside from that, the band has plenty of other epics, including "Through the Light and the Glass"
Jeremy Dus yeah it needs to be longer
true, but they decided not to, and thats why i like green day, cause of songs like this, all of their songs to me are a masterpiece no matter what songs i listen to that were made in this year i will always say green day is better
this is a song that for one is an emotional roller coaster like no other, and secondly it means something different and is perceived differently by each listener.
agree
Music is perceived different by everyone. It's poetry, and every person will find a different meaning to each and every piece of poetry out there. Usually depending on what the person has been through themselves.
That's the Beaty of Music :') Music is love, Music is life.
Every song in creation is about a man that hurt a woman and instead of loving him and keeping him around... she leaves him for another man. Yet she is his true love. She stops thinking about the children’s true needs, and believes that those needs can be fulfilled by the other means that the new man has. The root of all evil... money. Destruction of family and this is our worldly system. God is the Mother, the Lord is the Father, and Lord God is the new man... this is the truth. Music is MK Ultra. To fix the world we must rid it of all the music and begin anew.

It speaks to those who listen.
Released as the fifth and final single from the group's seventh studio album, "American Idiot," and the second song on the album. With the song running for 9 minutes and 8 seconds, it is Green Day's second longest song (with the band's longest song being fellow American Idiot song "Homecoming", which runs for 9 minutes and 18 seconds) and the group's longest song to be released as a single. The studio version of this song was considered to be unfriendly for radio, so it was cut down to 6½ minutes for the radio edit. The long version was still played on many album rock and alternative rock radio stations. At most live shows on the first leg of the group's 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, the band would pick a member from the audience to play guitar for the song. The single has sold 205,000 copies as of July 2010.
American Idiot is a concept album that describes the story of a central character named Jesus of Suburbia, an anti-hero created by Billie Joe Armstrong. It is written from the perspective of a lower-middle-class suburban American teen, raised on a diet of "soda pop and Ritalin." Jesus hates his town and those close to him, so he leaves for The City.
"Jesus of Suburbia" was the second multi-part song the group formed. Armstrong said it took "a long time" to write the song. Dirnt said that it came about from natural rehearsing between the trio. This song was an extension of Armstrong's desire to write the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of the future.
As the song changes into different sections, Armstrong’s guitars were recorded differently. The musicians would "split the signal from the guitar and send it into an amp while simultaneously going direct with it," to achieve a sound reminiscent of "Revolution" by the Beatles or the style of David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson. In addition, an overdrive pedal was employed to accentuate gain from the instrument, producing a "punchy" sound to each chord. For the first two sections of the song, Cool emulated Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts, two English drummers from the 1960s. For the final three, he drums in his style: "I'm tipping my hat to all these great drummers that I love, and then I kick the door down and do it … my style."[8] In addition to Watts, Cool pulled inspiration from Keith Moon and Alex Van Halen.[8] The song was composed by Green Day (with Billie Joe Armstrong writing the lyrics), and was co-produced by Rob Cavallo.
"Jesus of Suburbia" has five movements:
I. "Jesus of Suburbia" (@ - @)
II. "City of the Damned" (@ - @)
III. "I Don't Care" (@ - @)
IV. "Dearly Beloved" (@ - @)
V. "Tales of Another Broken Home" (@ - @)
Since its release, "Jesus of Suburbia" has received universal critical acclaim. People magazine called the song "epic" and a "magnificent nine-minute rock opera." It is often recognized as one of Green Day's greatest songs. It was voted the greatest Green Day song of all time in a Rolling Stone readers poll in September 2012. Magnet considered the song underrated, saying "Some will look at this choice and sniff, “How the hell can you call that underrated?” ... But how in the world can you call it “overrated” when the five-movement, nine-plus-minute song bobs and weaves its way through standard-issue pop punk(“Jesus Of Suburbia”), a piano-laced interlude (“City Of The Damned”), the slobbering, thundering middle section (“I Don’t Care”), acoustic mid-tempo connective tissue (“Dearly Beloved”) and an outsized, anthemic curtain call (the spectacularly good “Tales Of Another Broken Home”), all in service of a tale of bored rebellion as nuanced as Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia and as powerful as any of Paul Westerberg’s snot-nosed teenage character studies?".
Billie Joe stated in an interview:
"[The song] broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it’s everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out."
He also added:
" ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, ‘holy s-t, I can’t believe we just made this thing,’ and there was this fear, like there’s no looking back now."
Armstrong told MTV:
"Right after I came up with [the phrase] ‘American Idiot,’ I came up with [the album’s protagonist], ‘Jesus of Suburbia, I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I’ve never really read it?’ So, there’s no burning bush, but there’s burning towns and ethics."
I- Holy shit how did you have the capability to type an essay on this- I'm surprised
Also, that's actually really cool to know
Bille also said that JoS is his favorite gd song
Shit bro, u should write a book at this point

Oh my god this girl is saying 1D has better lyrics. Sorry to break it to you but 1D doesn't write their songs. All 1D is sing and try to look cute. Green Day has rose on their own not with the help of Simon Cowell. Anyways Green Days lyrics talking about life problems. Green Days lyrics always have a deeper meaning. I wouldn't expect 12 year olds to get the concept. Its just disappointing for people who listen to pop to say this is shit when this is really the shit.
yep
It's more the case that they haven't heard enough good music to consider the poor music that they're listening to as actually bad music, I mean if you listen to poor music long enough, you'd probably get used to it.
estoy contigo
I am about 10, and I understand the whole lyrics like 1D is a bunch of British Boys singing about finding the right girlfriend or loosing her. You know, that 1D is just a bunch of loosers who have no life? Guess what! 1D is! Green Day is better!
WHAT THE HELL? IM DIRECTIONER BUT I AINT STUPID GOD!, GREEN DAY IS BETTER THAN 1D IN ALL THE SENSES!
WE ARE THE STORIES AND DISCIPLES OF THE JESUS OF SUBURBIA
aw one year ago i didn't know how to make comments. this song was my official baptism into the rock punk and grunge phase. thank. GREEN DAY'S NEW ALBUM IS AMAZING

09:10 I hate this part
I just love Billie Joe Armstrongs voice.

I get high and happy off of of his voice
Cassidy S. Ok but nice profile pic
It’s better than all the broadway guys
Same
Ok, since everyone is debating the true meaning of the song, I'll explain my opinion
1st part
This part is an introduction to the character. He named himself Jesus of Suburbia because he don't follow any religion and decided to make his own practical beliefs (From the bible of none of the above). His lifestyle is completely fucked up, consuming drugs and alcohol (To alcohol and cigarettes and Mary Jane [weed], to keep me insane doing someone else's cocaine), but to him, it's normal, that is his way of living in modern day America (Land of make believe)
2nd part
The part tells that Jesus of Suburbia hated his hometown and every major cities. The city is damned because nobody gives a fuck about abandoned street kids (Including him I guess)
3rd part
The part tells Jesus of Suburbia's simple motto, I don't care if you don't. He also reflects on everyone's hypocrisy in his speech, we also know that JoS hated war, and protesting American foreign policy (War and Peace)
4th part
Inner struggle within JoS. Is it only him that feels this way about society? About modern day America? He is on the edge between insane and disturbed. He also talked about therapist who only cared for money. Everyone thinks he is an idiot, retarded, but he is only a human that had his own opinion, and frequently curses a lot
5th part
He stated that suburban people are only living, not breathing. They never felt true life experience because they are the slaves of society. He decided to run away, cause he don't want to become a slave of society. He was also broken because everyone is so rude and harsh to him.. He also embarks on a spiritual journey. He don't want to apologize for living life this way, he don't feel ashamed living as a punk troubled boy, and then he left home
The song isn't about Christianity, check out East Jesus Nowhere, now that's about religion and Christianity
Excellent analysis. One thought I had while reading this (although it has been years since I read it), but it sort of reminded me of Catcher in The Rye's Holden Caulfield. But again, I dont know if drugs and "mary jane" had much to do with Holden in the book.
+Patrick Pellow [edit]
--thought i had while reading -*-your analysis-*- was--
should have clarified.
(this...it...) not specific. lol
+Rifqi Thoriq In fact, to undestand all the history, you will need to listen the whole album (american idiot).
Your analysis, for me, are great... But, i dont know, i feel like something is missing.
(Sorry for any mistake in my... grammar!? (I need to use translate on this one, so i dont know) If there is anything wrong, please correct me :) )
+Rifqi Thoriq Well the truth is, JoS is a rather good explaination. The person's alias is Saint Jimmy, the whole album is based around him and people he knows (mainly Whatsername)
MinecraftTerroristSchoolShootingSocialExperimentPrankInTheHoodGONEWRONGAlmostGotShotGONESEXUAL I think Saint Jimmy is JoS's imaginary friend, or he's having a delusion

worst part 9:09
not as bad as 9:11... wink wink
Before people get offended by your joke, I'd like to say that I was born 9/12/01 and I am VERY aware of all the death on that day, and I still own terrorist jokes. Make good from the bad. Otherwise the world just becomes a cold place. You can joke about something bad, without being disrespectful. I love this part so much! It'd be cool if they turned that part into a full song rather than a part of this song, but I don't know what they'd write for it xD
0:00 to 9:09 is just yes XD
6:32 “guitar rocks” but it’s a bass...
I like how he said “GUITAR ROCKS ^-^” on the BASS solo
Greenday can't be compared to 1D. They're two totally different genres of music.
+gavin Thayer exactly one is a fake manufactured P.O.S. who are used for their age, looks, and voice(one direction) and the other being the complete opposite is green day
+Michael Schmidt I agree, and you made that comment on my birthday
well happy birthday lol
+Michael Schmidt Thanks, i notice that people who listen to green day are pretty chill even though people claim this song is emo/teenagery/rebellious, and that the only people who listen to one direction are in love fangirls ranging from 12 to 18
Correct! But I prefer Green Day not much of a fan of Pop
I love the transition in this song, it’s just perfect
7:39 me walking through school....

Like most Green Day songs this song really speaks to me as if I could listen to it for hours non stop
Thanks to all the ghosts who attended my concert tonight.
This is amazingly awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no better lyrics possible!
Green Day is back!
Yes i cant wait
+Christian Gaspar I'm going to the concert with my best friend and girlfriend
+Christian Gaspar Who are you going with?
a year later, and Redgie got no response. Hope He or she is still together with his or her girlfriend though
The lyrics I don't feel any shame I won't apologize makes me think of the time that I had to call the cops on my dad who tried to shoot my mom and was gonna shoot me and my sisters. Now he's mad because I got his guns taken away and he can't get them back. These lyrics really hit home to me because it happened last year and he wants me to feel sorry about it but I will NEVER apologize.
my parakeets love green day... is that stange?
Sunako Nakahara Your parakeets have great taste in music
nope that means they know what real music is
Not at all
I could imagine them headbanging to this song
I think I may be a parakeet
Tv fix not tv fixed. The TV's not broken. He's addicted to tv. getting his fix is watching TV.
But... Why you speak about One Direction here? Green Day Is better in all points... Lyrics, subjects, instruments... One direction is just commercial... And fucking big shit.. Like Justin Bieber and 5Sos because for me this is the same things... Green Day i'ts real music.
Real music? Music taste is subjective, or did you not know that? All music is real. 😑
For me, real music is good lyrics and hear each instruments so One direction, Justin Bieber and actual music created with computer and trafficked voice aren't good music... :)
Not good music, I totally understand you. That's fine. But you can't just label it as not being music at all. :) For some girls (and guys) it is music to them. But hey, Green Day over those guys anyday
Yes, I know, but it's what I think! :))
I can respect that :) Happy Holidays
I started taking Ritalin a week ago and I get reminded of this song twice a day now lol.
My TV is also fucked up too.
Do you perhaps have a case of BillieJoeitis?
Anna McFabulous Not anymore, I'm on Seroquel now.

"There's Nothing Wrong with me This is how I'm supposed to be in a land of make believe that don't believe in me" Describe's me Right Now...
I (re)found Green Day in 2010, when I was 13.
"I don't care if you don't care" still gives me the exact same feeling in my chest as a month from being a 25 year old woman. Also, I'm working on a Green Day sleeve c:
