- By governing the tongue, we gain perfection.
James 3:1-10
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

I love this passage in James! It teaches me why bad language is wrong. With people all around us that don't control their tongues, it's important to stand as an example to others!
Mark Nielson It's not just bad language. Whispering and gossiping about others is also a terrible sin. You can condemn or bless with the things you say.
I've met many men and women whose tongues speak out "profanities", yet whose words are pure like spring water. . . What of our leaders whose words are like glitter, a beauty to behold, and yet serve no other purpose than to lead astray the hearts of men women and children, and yet utter no "profanity" to dismay? Truly I say unto you, judge not the harshness of the voice of others, for even the best medicines are bitter and sting, yet purify what has been sullied... instead heed what is said, and pay mind to the context and content, for there is a time and a place for everything, and even the most beautiful of fauna can bring about poison. Ruah Ha Qodesh Spirit teach us self control walking in your love, your Love defeated death and evil...not the world's love, your words are mighty pulling down strongholds, conquering evil and overcomes. I am LDS and it is absolutely no surprise at all to me that the scripture that touched the Prophet Joseph Smith and prompted him to pray for greater knowledge is found in James (chapter 1, verse 5). I stand in awe and supreme gratitude for that singular, seminal event, which itself began with James’ inspired words, and the many intricate facets of the restoration that have followed over the past 200-plus years.

not a believer in hell-what kind of 'God' would send someone to hell for all eternity just because he didn't measure up?
The only ones who are sent to hell are those who know of Jesus Christ, then sin and do not repent. They will be there, and the Atonement will not have affect on them; they will have to suffer as Jesus suffered when he took our sins upon himself. THEN they will be given a kingdom of Glory. The ONLY ones who will be cast into Outer Darkness are those who knew Jesus Christ AND the Holy Spirit, but deny them. They will receive no kingdom of glory.
