- When Google dropped its first Pixel smartphone last year, at first I was not impressed. I dogged it for its lack of waterproofing, its derivative design, and for having a custom launcher when I expected pure stock Android. But then an important thing happened: I used the Pixel. And in short order, its instantaneous responsiveness ruined me for every other Android phone out there. Well today in San Francisco, Google announced a couple successors to those original Pixels. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL correct some of their predecessors’ shortcomings … and they introduce a couple more. Michael Dew if I was a reviewer, I would obliterate the pixel 2 for no headphone jack.
Why do that when you can call them out on how much they thought that was a bad idea last year(as Michael did)whilst adding a dramatic pause to emphasize it(again, as Michael did). Can't do much more than that :)
If you take away the headphone jack you should at least package in USB C headphones.

Pixel 2 is a massive disappointment. Pixel 2 XL looks like a much better product, but there's still too many compromises for me. At this point I'm almost certain I'll be picking up the V30 when it finally drops.

If the v30 had front facing stereo speakers I think it would be the undisputed best android device. I'm torn between getting a v30 (for the wide photos and amazing screen) vs the iPhone X (I'm primarily an apple user). Will be interesting to see if the Pixel line gets dropped next year because I can't see people choosing such bezel heavy phones over the other options.
Problem is V30 will be a lag fest in a year while the Pixel XL will last you 2 years +
Do you find that it is due to OS updates? Like personally, I find that on iOS if you stay on the OS that it comes with (maybe the 3rd iteration where all hazardous bugs are squashed) you generally have better battery life and performance in a year or two in comparison to if you had have constantly updated.

They would have to either knee cap the specs or make the phone fairly thick in order to get any useful battery life out of it if they made a 5"er bezeless

Companies wanna remove headphone jack for which they give reasons -
1.Saving space for battery and other components.
2.Transitioning into future of hearing gear.
3.Encourage their in-house products like expensive bluetooth earphones and headphones.
But are neglecting the needs of consumer.If you guys want to remove headphone jack , for which there is still no reliable alternative as -
1.Bluetooth gear still has connectivity issues.
2. One more battery to charge and take care of.
3. You can not use headphone and your charge at the same time(Good luck watching TV series and movies on that QHD screen).
4.3rd party availibility on USB-C headphones is still not impressive and highly overpriced.
For a good transition companies should at least consider these steps-
1.Providing at least a decent quality USB-C earphones in box.
2.Two USB-C ports.(Not goona happen anyway).
They want people to get used to future without even providing a suitable ground for them.
I think wireless earphone is the future now. Going usb-c earphone is getting backward. It's like you hoping google and apple produce laptop that support vga ... i dun see the reason

Nick Kalu, I don't control the trend, the users did. If people are switching to wireless earphones. There's nothing I can do even you scold me. Example I think it's pretty pointless when people still argue why vga is much better than hdmi when people are already moving on.
From the way I look at it, port-less phones is the way to go. Wireless techs will get better overtime, whether it’s about charging or audio. What Apple and Google doing right now is to push others to do the same thing. Trying to satisfy everyone is actually stalling progress in the grand scale.
2 USB C ports ? What about 3 headphone jacks, 2 micro USB ports and 2 HDMI ports ? Lmao. Wireless is the future. Time to adapt to it.

Front firing stereo speakers r a must for me second is great battery life and third is onboard storage I’m happy with my iPhone but I’ve always been an Android guy keep up the great reviews and always stay mobile......on a side note I’m a huge Star Trek fan myself discovery is awesome an I just wanted to know your thoughts on the Orville I like it it’s had some great episodes so far .....keep up the great work!!!!

Pretty glad I didn't wait up for the Pixel 2. As you saw last year, Google made fun of apple for removing the headphone jack and *SUPRISE*, it's gone this year. Makes me worry that Google will follow suit with what they said this year when their smaller model has the same specs as the larger. Drives me up the wall. I like the front firing speakers a whole lot but dang, why are we removing functionality when theres not a good replacement. Really happy I got my Note 8.

Tyler Barron With the screen size of the PH-1 you have to compare it to the Pixel 2 XL. Even though the body is roughly the size of the smaller Pixel. $850 vs $700. If you want to buy a Pixel XL 2 that matches the storage of the PH-1 then your spending $950. And literally everyone was saying it was too expensive.. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me.
You're getting an inferior product with the Essential. Better camera, dual speakers, ip67, OS updates for 3 years and first in line, better screen that supports Daydream, and if it's important to you custom development community on XDA will have a crap ton of options for these phones. I think I'd rather spend that extra money on a Pixel 2 or XL
Lesley Harrys depends on what you consider expensive to be. It's "logical" for that to be a subjective amount.
*Edit: Plus, it's not logical for someone to tell you not to buy something because cost too much, then turn around and recommend a similar product that cost 20% more. I agree the PH-1 has its faults, but being expensive isn't one of them.
Dennis Gatere It's not overall inferior now, is it? As far as hardware and software go they're fundamentally the same. However, the build of the PH-1 is simply unmatched by anything else on the market in my opinion. $250 more dollars seems like a lot for features I might never take advantage of and a subjectivity uglier design. You're also just assuming it's not going to get updates. I don't see why it wouldn't considering it's stock android. Oh well, I don't tend to keep my daily driver for more than 2 years anyway. As far as custom development; I stopped messing with that a after I got the 6p when it came out and just haven't felt the need to get back into it.

Only decent thing about pixel 2 having huge bezels is the speakers but even then it's ugly. They could've easily just implemented the same speaker setup as the iPhone lineup and remove the chin.
The Pixel 2 really looks like a cheap $80 phone on the front (yeah it's THAT ugly), the back is quite okay though
Yeah the backs look great except the camera symmetry but that might just be my OCD lmao. The blue colour option is an ugly stain on what could've been the best looking backing of a smartphone in 2017.

No headphone jack is an automatic pass from me. A grand for a chromebook that doesnt even include the pen I know is a very late April Fool's joke so I am going to wait for the real price anouncement on that one. I know Google didnt lose their minds.

I'm glad you noticed the custom launcher on the old pixel. Just goes to show, you can't blame companies for asking their own skins on top of Android if Google themselves did it.

I prefer the narrower phones as well. The 18.5:9 ratio on my Note8 is easy to use. After getting use to this and going back to my Note5 (5.7" & 16:9), it felt so chunky.

I agree. It's hilarious that when you bootup a Chromebook side-by-side with a Windows machine, the Windows computer will still wait a minute after the Chromebook is ready to start. It's hilarious that there is never any need to wait for a Chromebook to update, but many are the times when you'll be ready to work but have to wait a half hour for your Windows machine to perform an upgrade. It's quite humorous that you never have to think about viruses on the Chromebook like you do on a Windows computer. I get a real chuckle at how a Chromebook kills a similarly priced Windows machine both in how quickly the Chromebook charges and how long it holds onto the charge. Oh and I have the Samsung Chromebook Plus...the one with a built-in digital Pen. Yeah, I said built in.......Not like the Surface Pen which just sits there on the side of the computer (chuckle chuckle). Oh and the Chromebook's Pen can be used as a surrogate mouse to move around / scroll around all web pages......unlike the Surface Pen, which can only "scroll around" if you're pointing at a scroll bar. So yes, you're right....It's quite funny.

Is the top front facing speaker connected to the screen off proximity sensor so when you hold the phone up to your ear, the screen turns off & so does the top speaker at your ear so it doesn't deafen you if you accidentally have it on loud speaker?
My old HTC M8 did not do this & I hated it, regularly would deafen me if I accidentally had it on loud speaker & put the phone up to my ear. This is the reason why I don't like dual front facing speakers. But if the top speaker was connected to the screen off proximity sensor this wouldn't be a problem.
I much prefer my S8 with the perfectly fine bottom speaker.

Not sure whether to get the pixel 2 xl or the iphone x? I've been using samsung android for years and am absolutely tired of it, so the Apple ecosystem seems intriguing but new... I also need a big screen but would prefer it to be in a smaller device, yet the iphone x hasn't sold me enough yet. Thoughts?

I love the idea of the smaller pixel 2. I like the idea of bokeh selfie and using one lens to do it, brilliant. I know nobody loves bezels or the “satisfyingly new” no headphone jack, I’ve been living the Bluetooth life a lot, wired buds always in the bag just in case, and having front speakers are just wonderful. Having a stretched screen would be nice but your Instagram photo are the same size, so does the 16:9 videos, only more pillar box. Only advantage I can think of is for reading and using the keyboard in portrait orientation.
I don’t think they build this chrome book to sell at $1,000. I agree! Probably makes a great display model!

I have some questions about the phone why Google don't get to Google pixel 2/XL 3.5 headphone port and why they placed the search bar at the bottom of the screen while we were analyzing that it is better at the top left

I love how well written his scripts are, as opposed to anyone else's. Love the videos.
USB audio in the prosumer or professional work entails perhaps interfacing over USB. However the 3.5mm or 6.3mm connector remain as the essential port because the high end DACs and OP-amplifiers use the TRS analogue connector for the analogue sound in their products.
I don't see any good reason to separate the prosumer professional market and the consumer market.
