So glad I found this video! Tom sadly closed his bar on the 28th of December 2023. I happened to be on vacation in Bruges again at that time so I was there in the last moments before closing. I miss him and the great ambience he created already. Was my favorite place in all of Bruges! So happy you captured some iconic "Tom moments" as I always enjoyed him talking about different beers and trying them afterwards. Cheers!
@@stuartkey1243 No, it's closed for good. According to Tom the building was in too bad of a shape to keep it going. The place is empty now and the house is supposedly being renovated over the coming years.
Came across this cafe by accident. There was no one there except for the owner, Tom. He introduced me to a multitude of beers and I enjoyed quite a few haha..very nice guy Tom. Very relaxed, I enjoyed the Flemish music and seemed I had the whole bar for myself( probably just open for that day). Tom gave me a Remy glass and few coasters as souvenirs. Nice. I'll see you next time.
A good tip: Every belgian beer has its own glass. but if you dont have the right one, a wine glass is always a good alternative. (a beer sommelier told me )
This is such an excellent video. Yes, trying Belgian beers with a knowledgeable bartender is so much fun and loved that you two drank such a range - lambic, witbier, pale ale and strong dark ale from 2.5% to 10%. Well done. 👍
this makes me so proud to be belgian! thank you for visting our country. we LOVE our beers! there are so many more you should try like westvleteren ( hard to get tho... ) and duvel or cornet, those are my favourite. the lighter ones are stella and jupiler you should try too.
I can't believe you went for the Adriaan Brouwer. Adriaan Brouwer was a 17th C painter from Oudenaarde, thats where I live ! Great beer! Now they sell it in larger standard bottles, oak aged. Got awards this year! It is brewed in the Roman brewery in Oudenaarde, the oldest family brewery in Belgium (1545). The 'Gentse Strop' is also brewed there by the way ;-). Should have tried the Rebelse Strop though, thats the more amber and hoppy one and comes really close to the very well known Orval trappist beer.
This is our ABSOLUTE favourite bar in Bruges. Meet the locals (and other visitors), hear some amazing music and get a very warm welcome every time. Just look out for the arms on the chairs you're sat in... They have very 'pointy' arm-rests!! :-), Oh and the heater is just behind them. It'll make you thirsty...... Sint-Jakobsstraat 60, 8000 Brugge, Belgium
Belgian beer is amazing! I'm from Belgium myself and while I might be a tiny bit biased, there are barely any countries who can compete with the rich flavours you can find in belgian beers :) They're amazing and lovely to have on a chill evening with your loved one, watching some tv, getting some snacks and enjoying an amazing Belgian brew :) Been in the pub you recorded this video and it's amazing to just sit back, have a good one and enjoy the amazing view Bruges has to offer! BTW: Kriek is usually a beer that women/girls drink in Belgium cause alcoholwise it's on the lower end + it's more sweet compared to regular belgian beers :) nevertheless Kriek is still an awesome beer :D
It's always nice to find a beer video where the presenters talk, rather than shout at the camera. It is also good to find a bar in Brugge that I have not been to. I'll have to stick into my Good Beer Guide.
Great video guys! I'm in bruges every year so I will have to pop in to this pub. Got to say my favourite is kwak or karmalite. Will try the winter beer though sounds nice! 👍
If you're an advanced beer drinker, you should try a trip-trap. Which is a sort of beer cocktail made by mixing Westmalle Blonde and a Westmalle Brown. although Karmeliet is my personal favorite.
hey guys, im from holland and even we know the beers from belgium are king, south-holland beers are great too though. you're lucky to taste the best beers in the world!! I wanted to mention you one thing, you are from the UK right? I went to Lake District 7 years ago and I was surprised about the local beers there, they liked to add fruit and stuff too etc, the quality was extremely good and I remember one local beer shop there which felt like Harry Potter
The Strop refers to Ghent where it’s brewed. During the Middle Ages the people in Ghent rebelled against the Count of Flanders who was a vazal to the French King , mainly because of their economic ties to the English. The rebellion failed and the count ordered them wear the noose around their necks when appearing before them. To this day the noose, or strop in our neck of the woods, is the symbol of a true inhabitant of Ghent.
did you know that Adriaen Brouwer was a flemish painter from the 17th century? cfr. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adriaen_Brouwer in the eighties there was even a television series of his life on flemish tv. No wonder they named a beer after him. Although... I can't recall him ever being really famous as a painter. Maybe in generations to come, his name will live on in the beer named after him, lol :-D
silly fun fact: the "ae" in "Adriaen" simply means one should pronounce it as a long "aa" instead of a short "a" As in latin, the "e" behind and "a" means it should be pronounced long. In modern dutch, this is no longer the case, and we write "a" in closed syllables and "aa" in open syllables where a long "aaaaaa" is to be pronounced. Mostly :-) As I said, just a silly fun fact.
if you want something special, try the sour gueuze beers. They can only be brewed in the Zenne valley near Brussels. They use wild yeasts and bacteriae from the air to instill a natural fermenting process. What they produce is a type of beer called Lambic. Then they combine young (1 year old) and old (3 year old) lambics to create what's called a Gueuze. I'm not an expert but that's what I know. Check out the "Boon Marriage Parfait" Gueuze. One of the more 'commercial' gueuzes that can easily hold it's ground against the rares crafts gueuzes like "Oud Beersel" or "3 Fonteinen". FYI "marriage parfait" is french for "ideal marriage" as in it's the best combination of young and old lambics they've found to work perfectly together for creating the best possible gueuze. IF you should happen to come across an old "Oude Cam gueuze" (not the one brewed recently but the one at least ten years old) then ONLY open it and drink it in the best possible circumstances. It is BY FAR the VERY BEST gueuze EVER brewed. It has a very distinct butyric taste. My all-time favorite gueuze by far! Chances are that it's gone forever as the only pub I've known to still serve it (Den Hemel in Zichem) has recently gone dry and sold it's last bottles to customers... ofc the owner still has some bottles left for private consumption, but hey, that's his well-deserved prerogative :-D
Ofcourse you thought the first one was the best because you should never go down in % when it comes to beer, you should go up... start with the weakest ones and work your way to the 10% one :)
"It's crazy how it's so dark, but it tastes quite light". Brewing expertise speaks. 😂 Dude, is this about analysing beer culture in Belgium or just going on the piss? I'm unclear.

@@DigitalDesires87 that’s a shame. Saw the video and planned to go when I visit Brugge. Anyone have any other recommendations?

I used to live in Holland so went to Belgium a number of times, but I wasn't a beer drinker then, so clearly need to go back!

You had me at Belgian beer (no one makes better beer) and then you threw in Bruges! 👍🏻👍🏻
Perfect combination right! We honestly had such an incredible evening. The Adrien Brouwer winter beer was amazing, I'd recommend it to anyone.

for the last one I would have taken the Ename Rouge, the kriek Max is just way too sweet.
1:11 that was an artistic advice for Belgian beers
she holds her glas wrong, because this way, the beer will warm up quickly
Thanks for the tip!
What is that bowl of snacks you have there? It looks like garbonzo beans. What are they?
Answer from Bruges, it's "spicy balls"
Respect from Mexico ❤️
Thanks Guillermo!
Nice video :)
Thanks Robby!
Tip on playing this video. Change the speed to 0,75 and then go to 6:48 (it's their second round of beers) :D

Remember Tom from the Bruges Bear. Love the bar he now owns back in in around 3 weeks.
Love it there! Tom is brilliant!
I'm "LIKE" #124 with 0 dislikes.......that's the way it should be. Nice video.
Thanks!
You look really medieval. Kinda fits the Belgian beer setting though
Haha yes!
As an American, I wish we had a beer culture like Belgium. I usually only drink Belgian or German. Many American beers are too gimmicky nowadays.
do you play bass or guitar? 🤣😂😅
You look like Ross Noble's younger, drunker brother.
We loved trying all the Belgian beers at Volkscafe Sint-Jakobs, let us know your favourite beer (or drink) below!
Always a Friday Great Video just shot to tesco for some delirium , got me in the mood for belgium beer! 👍
Duvel is my favourite, you definitely have to try that one (8.5% alcohol). Great video's you've made about our Belgian delights!
