The sound...Literally bought me to tears. What an amazing piano sound! The artist did great by putting effort in it. + Wooden key stage piano. Thumbs up for Yamaha!
It took me 40 years of frustration since I played my first Yamaha grand at Electric Lady to find a digital piano to match that experience. The CP4 is IT!! Besides it's the ONLY piano to identify the exact grand and electric pianos by their proper name. This guy sold me on this.
I played the CP4 today. I was very impressed by not only the piano sound quality but also the acoustic guitars! I don't care what anyone says, this blows any Roland out of the water, best digital piano sound I have ever heard...
Haha...speaking of that, I do like the feel of the cp300 much better than the cp4. To me, the keys on the cp4 are too springy but the sensitivity on the cp4 is better.
I have just purchased a CP4 Stage - in pristine condition. I am looking forward to playing this piano and utilizing the sounds and features that the Stage CP4 is noted for.
For the first time in many years, Yamaha takes the lead with Piano. Roland can claim greater technology, and rightly so, but Yamaha is unmistakably more musical to my ears. Kawai takes no prisoners with unmatched quality of keybed, second to none. Clavia equilibrates with good-to-mediocre Fatar keybed, but also sings the praise of great realistic tones. After CP1, I’ve changed my feelings for Yamaha’s Pianos. CP4 is the most reasonable choice at the moment: Keys communicate superb intimacy with absolutely adorable character of piano sounds. But the CP1, although on highest qualitative level, leaves subjective assessment (whether it is worth, or versatile to enough for your taste and needs) is simply unmatched in the sheer brilliance. On superb speakers and monitors, CP1’s preset APmeetsDX has life of its own, to be explored for days, without stooping! CP4 is a great buy! I just regret leaving ingenious elegance and intuitive feel of CP1/CP5 interface. I hope Yamaha will not forget this interface for the next CP flagship generation.
Keybed ??! It's mechanical action not keybed that makes the difference, you need to take a tutorial in piano anatomy. And all, digital piano today CP4, RD2000 action is intolerable except the Kawaii.
goognam goognws your wrong,cp4 action is fine,I bought a Yamaha p515,great action,I’ve played plenty of real pianos over the years, acoustics, grands, and my “digital piano action”on my p515,is very comparable to real piano,it depends on what “digital piano “you play, some have not so great action.
Love all of your reviews, Katsunori UJIIE!! You have a wonderful personality and your joy comes through in every moment of playing and speaking. Thank you so much for all of your videos.
a very nice demo there Ujiie, I liked your opening piano number and not forgetting the rest too, very well played indeed :-) is there a piano or keyboard out there that you haven't played yet, lol :-) Keep uploading the great videos Ujiie, thank you Glen
Hello, The mini Tutorial at the end with the EQ was really awesome, I also love the tracking episode and the roland gaia tutorial. can you make tutorial videos please please onegai!
I am very curious what kind of studio monitors he is using (which one?) and or he is also using an audio interface. If so, which one? It would be very great if he could share on this too. Thanks.
Played this in the Yamaha Music store in London, one word....... Awesome! I'm not a patch on Ujiie but the CP4 encourages you to become a better player in every which way. I've always been a Yamaha man but recently switched to Nord but I'm seriously thinking of ways in which to own this. The CFX over the Itopia is angelic and worth the asking price alone.
+Lloyd Lawrence I played this piano three days ago and the dynamics and action dramatically altered my performance. The only other time I've felt that way was when I've played real grand pianos. Yamaha grands are my favorite btw.
Nord seems nice but simply isnt worth the double+ of the cp4... The cp4 sound exacly like 3 real accoustics... With nord you can put different patch... Thats the only +.. More choices of piano, not better just more sorts for that much money.
I am in a dilemma... Kurzweil artis or yamaha cp4? I found both at the same price, used! Which is the best do you think for live use and mostly for piano sounds and EPs and user friendlier?
I'm going to pick one of these up this week, I just hope they don't come out with a cp7 in a few months. It's a little late in the game but at least all the bugs will have been worked out, if there were any bugs. Things I wish it had -- ability to record midi data as the p255 can, and a metronome that can be set without a one beat tone. Just a straight click.
Great review. But I couldn't help but wonder what floor of what building was this recorded on? The scene outside the windows is best described as "puny" :D
S6 sounded awesome lol. For the first time i loved every acoustic piano sound. I wasnt a huge fan of the first or second rhodes you played but the '73 and '75 sounded awesome. The gritty sound in the bass of that 69 wurlitzer was also cool. First and second last DX sound were awesome as well. I dont really need anything else as have good strings and clavs on another synth
Still the best sounding stage piano out there, IMO. For APs and EPs, that is. Forget the CP88, another UI, but NO comparison, as a matter of fact, the APs suck big time on the CP88, no SCM … Would still buy the CP4 ! Highly recommended, if you can find one of those!
Master, how was the audio recorded from the CP4? Was any effect used? THe sound is so clean, I have a CP 33 and want to learn how to make it sound like that. Please share!!!
Dear All: Body/String resonance effect is not dominant, actually seems to be barely exist and even it is there, it can not be adjusted I guess... I can hear that effect on CP-1 easily. Please correct me if I am wrong... Thank you for this demo BTW.
I think what you meant is there are no sympathetic resonance between open strings. Put it in a different way, on a real piano any string will resonate common harmonics it has with other strings when several keys are played together (which occurs all the time). This effect is important and significative of the piano sound creating a richness of harmony. But the way the CP4 works it plays the same recorded sample of each note no matter what other note is played together. That is not quite true since each key is recorded at different dynamics from piano to forte but always a single note. If you want sympathetic resonance you cannot have a recorded sample. Only a synthesized piano sound like the Roland RD-800 supernatural piano engine can generate sympathetic resonance. The problem is that it is no longer the recorded sound of a real concert grand piano but a sound created from scratch from the computer engine but it will have sympathetic resonance. You cannot have both : sympathetic resonance and realistic sound, you have to choose. Well.. unless you buy a real piano.
+goognam goognws don't say stupid stuff....you can simulate easily resonance even with samples....kurzweil forte, korg kronos and nord stage/nord electro/nord piano ALL have sympathetic resonances, and ALL are based on sampling! even roland rd800 has samples, is a acombination between physical models and samples.
obvious is a simulation but if you old down a key in nord stage or every nord except lead, or kurzweil forte or kronos and then holding down you play a note ex c2 and then c3 you can cleary hear the hamonics, same as on a real grand (I own a kawai grand) it works perfectly wont be 100% authentic but it does the job, if you do same on cp4 or cp1 ( I have also a cp1) it doesnt happen.....so when you say it's impossibile to have resonances and harmonics using samples you say an incorrect thing. secondly, best piano simulations and also acoustic are all based on samples eg vienna imperial or nord library....because phisical modelling (pure phisical like pianoteq or viscount physis) all sounds weird that's due to cpu limits maybe in future we will have a synthetic piano sounding like a grand....but nowadays high definition sampling is the best way to catch an acoustic sound.
Thank you for your contribution. I think sympathetic resonance feature sounds a little bit luxury for today's technology. It is nice to have it but the digital pianos with current technology do not caliber of producing real effect as it is supposed to be... Thank you anyway :)
Thank you Goognam. I agree with you. Sympathetic resonance feature on current digital pianos are not convincing. May be in near future, we might have such devices... :)
Does the CP4 basically have the entire MX engine inside it? Can it do everything the MX61 can do? Oh and remember folks, that great sound is not coming from the keyboard alone -- it's coming from Ujiie's hands.
+Paul Deck You got it right, Paul. Ujiie San is an excellent pianist, and by far this has to be the best online demonstration of the CP4. Every now and then I've come across people making comments on the internet saying that this piano is 'lifeless' and not made for 'real musicians' and all I can think is how real artists never blame their tools. The CP4 doesn't have the hype and gimmicks, it isn't sexy looking like the Rolands and Nords of the world--it just does it's job to the best of the pianist's ability. I'm so stoked to buy one.
I don't like that aluminum strip. It does not fit the rest of the design. The CP-40 doesn't have this and looks more authentic and complete without it.

Love this guy, he makes the best demo in my opinion....
You make the best demo review of piano and synth on internet. Thank you for help us to know better all the instruments that we can directly test.
Best digital piano sound ever.
What a beautiful sounding CP4 and as usual great demo by the master himself
Katsunori Ujiie's demos are oustanding, even better with English captions

Funny I was just watching one of ur videos from 2008 where u said the CP300 was the best digital piano sound you ever heard. Just thought it was funny
Haha...speaking of that, I do like the feel of the cp300 much better than the cp4. To me, the keys on the cp4 are too springy but the sensitivity on the cp4 is better.
***** Yes I agree a little springy but once you get used to it a wonderful expressive action it becomes
HI. Syntartist69 BETWEEN THE CP4 AND THE CP88, WHICH ONE HAS A BETTER PIANO SOUND??
wow a must buy 10 years from now
演奏の幅が広いですねー♪どんな音色でも美しく弾きこなすなんて憧れます。
因みにCP4購入を検討してた時に大変役立ちました。
God, that electric piano sounds so good. Ujiie-san, you are such a good pianist! Great video!
I have just purchased a CP4 Stage - in pristine condition. I am looking forward to playing this piano and utilizing the sounds and features that the Stage CP4 is noted for.

I would pay over 7k for a V-Piano.

Great démo, thankyou.... but now I want a CP4 !
5:36 the lick!!!
+eddugers90 Yeah just a tremendously great lick, you're so right about that. Just makes you smile.
He also plays it at 14:28 in the Jupiter-80 review! Put them in the next compilation!
Wonderful sound... Iroiro arigato gozaimasu, Katsunori-san...
I am very curious what kind of studio monitors he is using (which one?) and or he is also using an audio interface. If so, which one? It would be very great if he could share on this too. Thanks.

I am in a dilemma... Kurzweil artis or yamaha cp4? I found both at the same price, used! Which is the best do you think for live use and mostly for piano sounds and EPs and user friendlier?
That‘s easy. For the best feel, action, AP and EP sounds, go with the CP4!
Thanks for the subs!
CP4素敵♡
the sound more impresive

Excellent piano sound. But why DX-pianos sound MONO?! Are they defective?
Great review. But I couldn't help but wonder what floor of what building was this recorded on? The scene outside the windows is best described as "puny" :D
What do you mean? I think it's a great view. Adds to the video.

In your opinion: Is CP4 same quality, as CP1?
Does this have internal speakers? What am i hearing the sound through?
Is the CP4 better than the CP88 ?? Don't know wich to buy
How do people think it holds up after time?
Still the best sounding stage piano out there, IMO. For APs and EPs, that is. Forget the CP88, another UI, but NO comparison, as a matter of fact, the APs suck big time on the CP88, no SCM … Would still buy the CP4 ! Highly recommended, if you can find one of those!

Which speakers or amplifier do you use?
Well done

he probably doesn't speak a word of english, or he would have answered you i think.
I have heard him speaking English. He has an excellent command of the language.
