Huge African Cichlid Hatchery Tour - Something Fishy

  • A tour of a really cool local fish store with a massive breeding operation in the basement. It's called Something Fishy. In this video, the owner (Dave Hale) shows us his 33,000+ gallons of tanks. Just when you think you've seen all of the tanks you go around a corner or down a hallway and there are more. It's a really impressive place and if you're ever near Cleveland you've got to check it out.

    I got around 80% of my CA/SA cichlids from somethingfishy. Super clean tanks and shop. Plus rare cichlids like my Golden Jag. Thanks Steve for coming to the Land!

    thanks Steve and thank you for the nice complements everyone that has posted here.
    It's a lot of work every single day. Lots of water changes etc. help keep water clear and clean. I have been in the hobby including the business over 38 years. also been to SA collecting, Africa diving Malawi and Australia great Barrier reef and rainforest. Been fortunate to do what I have loved most of my life.
    Support your LFS we are a rare & dying breed. :)

      Something Fishy Inc. Wow a metal frame tank. Brings back memories. My 1st tank was given to me as a hand me down and it was a 10 gal metal frame with a corner bubbler.

      @lizzyanthus1 7 років тому +3

      I also started out with the old metal framed and slate bottomed tanks! Kind of dates us, doesn't it? LOL I loved those tanks. Heavy as all heck though. And yup, the little corner boxed filters. I was so dumb back then. Always threw away the filter floss when cleaning them, and the charcoal. Must have been crashing my cycle every time. Ugh. The hobby has certainly come a long way, hasn't it?!

    I know he doesn't like centralized systems, and I totally understand why, but It looks like he could save a lot time by automating the water supply input in his hatchery? Even with the help of a few part-time employees it's gotta be a huge chore! Poor guy, that is a colossal amount of work managing that many gallons of water. I've actually tried unsuccessfully running this sort of operation, and it ain't in no way for the faint of heart! Maybe it just says something about his character? Probably.

    • @somethingfishyinc.5313
      @somethingfishyinc.5313 7 років тому +2

      65FullMoon83 howdy...it is a lot of work and time. I wanted to do a water change setup originally the first room we call H1 but I'm not always the most patient person especially about 15 years ago when I bought this building. To get the tanks all drilled would added cost and time so I said screw it. Even with a water changing system you still need to go in and vacuum poop, move decor to get to dead spots etc so do not totally get away from manual maintenance.
