This was the war of my generation, and looking back I realize how young they really were. When the design was chosen, there was a lot of conflict over it. Many did not feel it was an appropriate memorial. But I have been there several times, and it is profound, and now it is hard for anyone to imagine it any other way. This is especially true late at night after the crowds have left.
The name of the father of a good friend of ours, is on that wall. He was only 6 when he lost his father. And each name was a person, someone’s child, and when you see them all inscribed there, it really hits you. And then we think of the ones that died after they came home, but the war killed them as sure as those killed in combat. What makes me sad is that the same is happening still, our military are not only dying in combat, but afterward from the damage sustained to their body and souls. While the song refers to Viet Nam vets and their memorial wall, it could be about any war, for every tombstone represents a wall.

As a Vietnam vet I loosely followed the controversy over the Wall and heard the arguments about how non heroic the design was from many in the hypocritical politician class who put no skin in the fight. Later in the '80s I was in the DC area and decided to visit the memorial. It shook me to a degree I never expected and I won't attempt to try to convey here all the emotions I felt that day. But I did think that maybe, just maybe people seeing all those names that represented real people who were sons, fathers, brothers would hope that it also might be a memorial to end all wars. But I was wrong.

I remember when President Nixon said that no more troops would be sent to Vietnam. I can't tell you how relieved my mother was. My two older brothers were of draft age and could have been sent.

It was the first time I saw a grown man unashamedly cry.

When I was stationed in Spain while in the Air Force, three of us were off on the 4th of July and walking around Madrid. We rounded a corner and there was a huge American flag flying, we all stopped and stood at attention for some time. We finally figured out we were at the Embassy. After we recovered I noticed all three of us had a tear rolling down our cheek's. I was too young for Vietnam, but I knew upper classmen that had been there.

Some of my childhood friends have their names written on that wall. We signed up, believing that we were fighting for freedom only to find out that Johnson was sending troops to Nam to help the French to re-colonize it. Regardless of Johnson's motives, those who served, served with hearts bent on freeing people therefore their sacrifice was for another man's freedom! Me U.S. Navy 1967-1971. I feel the tears that your holding back brother.

Our Vietnam Vets deserved better than they got!
    He would die one night
    When the winds turned cold
    In that cardboard box
    He had called his home.
    Then they tossed his corpse
    Into a pauper’s grave
And left his soul to roam
    The land of the brave.

Perhaps the Vietnamese Vets made the greatest sacrifice of all because they were sent to a jungle where they seldom saw the enemy. They were often used as decoys to draw fire. We weren’t under attack. There was no threat to our freedom.
I missed Vietnam only because the war ended before I could be drafted. I feel guilty now because several of my friends went to Vietnam and were killed when our freedom was not in jeopardy. So sad and still makes me angry.
