Don Bluth wasn't fired by Disney-- on his 42nd birthday he resigned and took 10 other Disney animators with him to start his own studio. He was unsatisfied with the bureaucracy and wanted to work on projects that were more creatively fulfilling. You definitely can tell Bluth's movies apart by the creativity, rotoscoping (to capture those really realistic human expressions and body movements), and a lack of fear to add dark/scary elements to films largely marketed to children. Anastasia may be my favorite of his but there are lots of other great ones: The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, All Dogs Go to Heaven. (Titan AE will also very much give you those Treasure Planet vibes!)
As a kid I knew his style and loved it. Don't for get Dragon's Lair. And I always loved the darker tone of his movies. (I first know his style because he tends to always have electricity animated in his movies. Like always. There is always something that becomes electrified.)
Well, there you go. They are the same people from the Secret of NIMH. Hope they get to that one too!
Rock-a-doodle and Anastasia were my favorite of his as a kid.

Both Anastasia and Prince of Egypt are two of the best animated movies ever but so often overlooked. Neither are Disney.

Yep, I used to watch Anastasia 1997, thinking that it’s a fictional movie, I mean it is but… like I thought it’s character we’re just made up but no the Rominoves and Rasputin had real life counterparts, as a child and now I like the p.o.e.

Fun fact: the drawing Anastasia gives to her grandma in the movie is based on a real painting from the real Princess Anastasia from 1914
Her family did have a small dog, that was her brother 's dog. Also, Anastasia was known to be a jokester and prankster. She was very rambunctious and did, in fact, "terrorize the cook."
Honestly, i love Dimitri and Anya as a couple. Normally I hate "We despised each other, so it must be love" Storylines, but this movie makes it work. I don't think they ever _did_ despise each other, they are just both very guarded because of their upbringing. There was defitly an attraction there from the start, It just wasn't easy for either to open up to the other, so they resorted to pulling up the wall and tradig witty banter.
And the Banter. They are clearly matched in wits and strength of will, wich makes it really refreshing.

It works because the characters are foils for each other. There worldviews, values and desires are in opposition to each other. So they have to bicker to show that divide before they start to understand each other

This movie was a Don Bluth production. Don Bluth WAS a Disney artist, and he separated to create his own movies. Unfortunately he went out of business, but before he did, he made masterpieces like All Dogs Go to Heaven, Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time, Thumbelina, and Anastasia. There are many other movies under his belt, but these are the best known. Highly recommend you watch them.
I grew up on Land Before Time movies, but they did start to go downhill a little after the 8th movie

@@kayasaki86 don’t be sorry! I’d be glad to answer. Well, they still exist, yes! There are several “main palaces” like Catherine Palace and Hermitage Museum, and there’s also a bunch of summer residences, etc. I’ve been to a couple of them

The part where Anastasia sings Once upon a december you can see that she has a shadow but the others don't because they are in her mind. That is so sick!

Um it gets plenty of credit lol, they made a whole musical of it...people use the word "underrated" too much, when something isn't underrated at all.
true but thats how i feel about rock a doodle and quest for camelot since those two were among my top mioves back in the day always see people bash those 2 but i just cant see whats wrong with them maybe because i grew up with swe version so never seen eng version

I'm Russian and this was my favorite animation when I was in school. Everybody loved it, it's so good. And the Russian dub for it is amazing, I mean the songs and everything, sounds really authentic. Great reaction!

I'm russian too. I must be watched this animation over 100 times in my childhood, it was my favourite. I really love that songs in russian dub!
Actually this movie was made into a Broadway musical. My mom took me to see it when I was like eleven. It was more realistic in its portrayal of Russia back then and it didn’t have to be kid friendly. I suggest listening to the songs. Some of them are from the movie but it has a lot of original ones too. My favorite is Land of Yesterday
My fave from the Broadway version is tied for "In A Crowd of Thousands" and "In My Dreams". And the climax gives me chills.
My sister and I got to see it as well. Such a great experience mixing nostalgia with a new experience.
I watched the Spanish musical adaptation in Madrid and it is awesome. More adult, more realistic and it gives a realistic explanation why It is better for Anya not to be in the spotlight.
Seeing it in a couple months and so excited! “My Petersburg” was a great addition to Dmitri

@@robertbretschneider765 yea in a way that kinda did lead to the families demise because the public really hated him, and he being a close friend and advisor(not lover simply a comrade) just made them want to overthrow the family even more, You couple that with Nicholas's poor efforts in bettering the country and World War 1 and boom you got a revolution.

My suspicion is that Don Bluth wanted to show the Disney Company that they made a huge mistake firing him. So he made a better Disney movie in the princess musical genre and gave her a strong personality and her own hero's journey who defeats the bad guy herself.

Something I love is that Anastasia is a princess who is very active in her own movie. During the train sequence alone, she proves herself just to be as useful and important as Dimitri is in trying to stop the train.
"In The Dark Of The Night" is seriously one of the best villain songs ever in my opinion. Also, since you asked, Bartok is a bat.

Dmitri's sassy head wiggle when he says "Miss what? You're talking?!" always makes me so happy.
God, Anastasia had such a HUGE impact on me as an artist when I was growing up! I was 13 when this originally came out, and I was _enamored._ I eyeball copied stills from it endlessly since it was right at that sweet spot when I had officially decided to pursue art as a career in _some_ capacity.
This film, Titan A.E., and the Disney Renaissance films I grew up with all had a tremendous influence on my drawing style - particularly drawing people, which is my specialty - that's still evident to this day even now that I've been working professionally as an illustrator for the last 15+ years.
It always amuses me when someone asks if _Anastasia_ influenced my work because it's THAT evident to anyone with an eye for visual styles, especially the way I draw cheeks in profile.
Wasn’t sure if you noticed but Anastasia dropped the music box before escaping through the hole in the wall so the music box was left with Dimitri on the floor when he was knocked out as a boy. Also the iconic Bernadette Peters plays Vlad’s girl lol 😄
Bernadette Peters also played the evil stepmother in Brandy's Cinderella. She even got her own diva song in that one.
I’m so glad y’all understand why this was one of my favorite movies as a kid. The animation is gorgeous. I recommend The Road to El Dorado too!

Anastasia was my favorite princess movie growing up. I wanted her to be a real Disney princess. Also loved princess Odette from the Swan princess too

"Is that supposed to be a reference?" Um, to himself I guess? Rasputin was poisoned with cyanide, which failed to kill him, then shot, a *lot* , which also failed to kill him. Then thrown into a frozen river wrapped in a carpet, failed to freeze to death, and drowned.

One thing I wanted to share is that wasn't Christopher Lloyd singing "In the Dark of the Night" that was Jim Cummings who did the end singing of "Be Prepared" when Jeremy Irons blew out his voice on the part "You won't get a sniff without me!".
Jim Cummings, the voice actor who's very existence means that playing the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game with the handicap of "using only animated movies" is not a handicap at all.
This movie is literally a masterpiece, the chemistry between Anya and Dimitry is just off the charts
Also the story of the real Anastasia is literally so sad, I’ll never forget learning about her story in school
The olfactory glands are closest to the brain so that was the reason Anya remembered the smell. Memories are more easily remembered by smell
What always impressed me was the sparkle on the gowns, necklace, other jewelry,, and crowns.
as someone who grew up with this movie and isnt an animator but have always thought this movie was especially beautiful. it makes me very happy that my praise of the animation isnt nostalgia bias on my part. that the animation is as impressive as ive always thought

As an historical aside: _If_ Anastasia had been alive, her Title of "Grandduchess" would have been pretty empty. Russia was firmly under the hand of the -Red Army- Bolsheviks and it is doubtful that any other country would have risked war this shortly after WWI to help a deposed Monarch back into power in an unstable and volatile country that would have probably torn itself to pieces over this.
She still would have lived a very comfortable life around Europe with all her cousins and extended family
Red army was just an ARMY. Russia was under Bolsheviks :)

It was interesting to hear you both have big reactions to the animation. I've always loved this movie because of their chemistry/story/music, but this was cool to watch to appreciate the animation as well.

This was one of my favourite non-disney movies when I was kid. And if you liked Bartok (the little bat assistant), he does have his own movie called 'Bartok the Magnificent' (mind you, it's not as great as Anastasia, but it's got its own charm)

Bartok the magnificent is a childhood favorite. U can tell they really recycle the look for Prince Ivan. Prince Ivan and Demitri could be brothers lol

Thank you for giving Bartok more screen time than other reactors. He’s my favorite villain sidekick and often gets overlooked. His little quips were so funny and his accent just made him cute and likable, even though he worked for the bad guy.

Great reaction to this delightful film! It’s a musicalization of the 1956 Fox film “Anastasia” which won Ingrid Bergman her 2nd Oscar for Best Actress. And of course that film was based on history and the false rumor that Anastasia survived the massacre of the Romanov family and several imposters appeared, claiming to be Anastasia. The most famous imposter was Anna Anderson, who maintained the story until her death in 1984. Her story was proved false when the bones of Anastasia were finally found in 2007 and confirmed by DNA and Anderson’s DNA proved no match to the Romanov family at all. The history buff in me always kind of resented that they dragged the supernatural into this, making it so the Romanovs were beloved heroes and the only reason there was a Russian revolution was Rasputin cast a spell. But I get why it was done and enjoy it anyway. Such beautiful animation and a great score. Thanks for reacting to this!

*1952:* The French play "Anastasia" by Marcelle Maurette debuts (inspired by Anna Anderson's case)
*1954:* The translated play successfully premieres on Broadway
*1956:* 20th Century Fox adapts the play into a hit, Oscar-winning film
*1965:* The play is musicalized on Broadway as "Anya" (it flopped and was unsuccessfully retooled and retitled over the next three decades as "A Song for Anastasia" in 1967, as "The Anastasia Game" in 1989, as "The Anastasia Affaire" in 1992, and as "Anastasia: The Musical" in 1998)
*1997:* Fox adapts the 1956 film into a successful animated musical (Oscar-nominated for Best Song and Best Score)
*2017:* The animated film is adapted to Broadway (closed after two years but has been successful on tour worldwide)
I had this on vhs and I would play the "Once Upon a December" scene over and over, it was so beautiful and melancholy and little me loved it.
Underrated animated movie and chemistry of main couple is chef’s kiss. The animation for me is on par with Brother Bear and other good underrated animated movies. Both Dimitri and Anya are savages and head strong leads. Yes you are right, the starting shot of music box is stop motion. Also yes it’s based on the real Romanov family during Russian revolution especially about the rumours that were circulating around that Anya and her brother might have escaped which resulted in many girls trying to imposter being grand duchess Anastasia. Rusputin also was a real person who used to help her brother deal with his disease. I’m so glad you guys finally watched this movie and enjoyed it. Can’t wait for you guys to react to more non-Disney movies such as
Legend of the guardians owls of Ga’Hoole, The Adventures of TinTin, Meet the Robinsons, Epic, Wonder Park, Sinbad, Tinkerbell series, Kung Fu Panda trilogy.

Anastasia is my absolutely favourite animated movie. There's so much to love about this movie. The animation is breathtaking. The attention to detail is mighty impressive. The songs are freaking amazing and I still love listening to them to this day. They've managed to capture the haunting nostalgia of Anya's past really well. The characterisation is incredible as well. I love Anastasia and the fact that she's sassy and headstrong. She doesn't let anyone walk all over her. Anastasia and Dimitri are my favourite couple. I am so glad they weren't the typical love at first sight couple. Their banter also doesn't come across as fake and over the top. They are genuinely butting heads throughout most of the movie and in the process, fall in love with each other despite their differences. Anastasia is also not depicted as a weak princess in need of a saviour . Sure, Dimitri helps and supports her but in the end, she gets rid of the villain. Her fighting spirit is such a breath of fresh air. If you can't tell already, I am obsessed with this movie even as an adult.

I can never decide if I love this or the Broadway adaptation better. I love Spunky!Anya and Rasputin and Bartok and "In the Dark of the Night", and so much of the animation in the film is just gorgeous ("Once Upon a December" especially), and can';t be replicated on stage. BUT the Broadway musical made the story more true to history by having the villain be a loyal Bolshevik who wants to squash the rumors of a surviving Romanov, and showing a more vulnerable but fiercely brave Anya who was more clearly effected by witnessing her family get massacred (and corrected her age - the real Anastasia would have been 15 already in 1916, not 8). For me the Anya/Dmitri relationship is also somehow even more adorable on stage. I'm sort of just glad both exist and highly recommend fans of the film check out the show's soundtrack to compare and contrast!
I think the music got completed in the Broadway adaptation. I mean they play it live and all that but the sound is grander and fuller.
YASS I second this! Also My favourte is "I'll bless my home land" just chills listening to that acapella chorus of people morning their home, wishr I could see it animated wth like parallel scenes of the family running away years before and Anya now
@Alexis M. I don't think Rasputin poisoned them... He indeed a weird guy, but so far none stated he has malicious intention. He caused rumor about The Romanov and added more stir to the situation, but he did no real harm
The musical is good but I can never forgive it for what they did to my boy Dimitri. (Movie Dimitri would rightfully slap the shit of musical Dimitri at the end)
I really love the 2d way more than the 3d ones... even in Disney. Can you imagine if frozen was made in this style like the princess and the frog?

I am so excited and happy that you guys are reacting to this movie. Anastasia has always been and will always be my absolute favorite animated movie. I love my Disney films and there is a lot of them that are on my top favorite animated list, but this movie, in particular, has always held such a special place in my heart. I was so obsessed with this movie that as a child I memorized each song, and still to this day can sing the majority of them.
This movie really made me love the shirt sleeves and waistcoat/vest look Dimitri has. It's my favorite dressy yet casual-ish look.

I was obsessed with this movie. When my hubby and I got married the song "At the Beginning" was our song when we lit the unity candle. And just a few months ago he took me to see the Broadway musical of Anastasia in New Orleans. It was incredible and very well done. The story, the songs, the animation was perfection and will always be one of my favorite animated films😊

For the record, other animated Fox films were FernGully The Last Rain Forest, Once Upon A Forrest, and Titan AE. I'm pretty sure those were the only 2D animated films they made
The Broadway musical added more songs and I feel like they completed the story and gave us more of the characters' insights. "Everything to Win" by Dimitri broke me.
I always loved this movie and I really love how they played into the rumor/mystical conspiracy of Rasputin making a deal with the devil(as to why he survived poisonings and etc) and really ran with it. It's such a fun interpretation!
This has always been one of my all time favorites. I agree that the romance and chemistry of the two characters is excellent.

I have such fond memories of Don Bluth movies, going all the way back to 1977 and Pete's Dragon (I wore that VHS tape out in the 90s). Some other personal favorites are A Troll in Central Park, Rock-A-Doodle, Thumbelina, The Pebble and the Penguin, and Titan A.E., which is definitely the most cinematic of the movies.

Really love seeing you guys not only enjoy but also appreciate this movie. All of the aspects were TOP TIER. The animation style, the music, the performances were all amazing. You can see the hard work that was put into it. It's still great and definitely in my top 5 animated movies.

Wow, amazing reaction guys! I cannot tell you how much it warms my heart to see you both enjoy this film so much. It's a massive part of my childhood. I always wanted Anya's necklace, I rewatched this multiple times with my cousins, we knew all the songs and I'm pretty sure I even had an Anya barbie 😂I'm so glad you guys picked up on all the creative choices they made with the animation...there was so much creativity (the Van Gogh style etc) and so much attention to detail including all the movements. It was great to see all the technical aspects from both your perspective! And James, I agree about Anya & Dimitri...they have always been my favourite animated couple for exactly the same reasons as you. Their chemistry/ banter is the cutest thing ever...very 90s rom com which I love. It reminds me of "When Harry met Sally." The romance, the shots, the dialogue...it's all very cinematic and I honestly wish they did more animation in this style. I love Disney a lot but Anastasia is just so unique. It's my favourite Don Bluth film but if you want to check out more of his work "All dogs go to heaven" is also pretty good :)
There is a prequel to Anastasia that most people don't know about called Bartok the Magnificent. Bartok is the name of the little albino bat y'all thought was funny. It's not as good as Anastasia because it was only half the budget and only a little over an hour long, but Bartok still brings all of his usual sass and I think it's worth at least one quick watch.
Omg! This is such a great iconic and classic movie I grew up watching multiple times! Glad you guys loved it! The animations was wonderfully done and the songs! It was interesting looking into the Romanov family history and it’s so sad what happened to them.
I loved how they did incorporate a few things from true history. The picture they put in the paper is modeled after a real picture and the drawing she made for her grandma is actually a drawing the real Anastasia did.

I grew up with that movie, since it came out only a year before I was born. It still is one of my favorite movies of all time, my dad got me the Music Box for my 18th birthday and when I was 19 my mom and I watched the musical in Stuttgart, it was really magical. And now I have a cat called Pooka 😊
Great reaction! You guys should really watch the "spin-off" too, "Bartok the Magnificent". It's nothing compared to Anastasia, BUT the story and the characters are lovable, and it always jerks some tears out of me. It's kind of a "redemption arc" for our little fruit bat.

The Secret of Nimh is an excellent animated movie that's also by Don Bluth. There's scenes in it that terrified me as a kid and one particular bit of voice acting that still gives me chills.
I listened to the soundtrack for this movie sooooo much when I was a kid.
I spent my entire childhood thinking this was a Disney movie. It was that good. I didn't find out it wasn't until I was like 18 or 19. I do know that it impressed Disney so much that they spent 2 decades trying to buy it and failed every time. They didn't get it until 2019 when they bought Fox so now it's available on Disney+.

Also, there’s a book out there of her actual diary entries and the end of her last entry and the last few oages tell the story of what happened as well as who took care of her diary the pictures in there are breath taking

I was 15 years old when I saw this in the theater. And seriously, your reaction to that overhead shot of everyone dancing in the ballroom at the beginning was pretty much my reaction. I was blown away! I knew the rest of the movie was going to be epic.
And mind you, by this point, we'd already had The Lion King (1994) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), but the special effects in Anastasia just looked even more spectacular.
I saw the movie four times in the theater. Glad you both enjoyed it too!
I live in the LA area and I was so thrilled to see the Broadway stage musical of Anastasia love at the Pantages Theatre two years ago!!! Never thought I would have the chance to see it since of course, Broadway is New York and I didn't think this company would do a tour 🤣😩🫶🏻 A lot of differences to this movie and a bit more Historically or rather era politics based but so great!
When I found out the play was going to debut in NYC, I did research on the history of the Actual Romanovs, Rasputin, and the actually lost princess Anastasia.... an absolutely tragic and fascinating story of true history. I loved when Ninetailbrush mentions right in the opening scene when Rasputin falls in the icy water "was that a reference?!" Because yes. Yes it was. Rasputin was considered the man who could not be killed. They tried to murder/execute him so many times. His many attempted murders and near deaths along with his spooky influence on the Czarina almost does seem to indicate something spooky or something natural was at play, if you're prone to those types of beliefs lol.

As a russian i used to watch Anastasia all the time when I was a little girl. Russia princess with such a strong plot line (real one, Romanovs was a beautiful russuan royal family with such a tragic history) in the movie like that?! It shocked me, I was blown away by how beautiful this movies is! the visual, the story, characters and music!! No matter how many Disney movies I'd watch and find them cool, Anastasia always going to be my favorite, I always wanted to be like her - the lost russian princess who find her family and herself with the man who actually made a mistake but let the women be a hero of her own anyway!
if you all like 90's animation and haven't watched The Swan Princess (1994) you should it's one of my favourites i owned it on VHS and now own a DVD

The actual real story this is based on is heartbreaking.
Love this movie, and if you want more like this I'd recommend other Don Bluth films: Titan AE, The Secret of NIMH, Balto, and The Land Before Time!

I myself saw Anastasia in the cinema when I was 7 years old. To this day, this film is my number one. A few years ago I even ordered the music box from San Francisco.

Fun fact: There’s also a prequel to Anastasia called „Bartok the Magnificent“ (1999) which I remember loving just as much if not more! I’ve seen zero reactions to it on UA-cam, but I think it was honestly pretty good for a comedy animated movie about a side character like Bartok.

This and Prince of Egypt are visually STUNNING! The music is beautiful and powerful, and the stories are still mostly child appropriate while having very real and dark elements

The only qualm I have with this movie is the way they pronounce the name Anastasia. Since it’s my name I always preferred the Russian version but other than that this is probably the best underrated fox movie!
Anastasia was of my favorite Don Bluth movies as kid. I love the music and the songs. I even have the replica of both Anastasia’s music box and necklace.

I loved watching this growing up. Not to mention, "In the Dark of the Night" is one of my favorite villain songs. Obviously the main thing that struck me growing up was that the "main" characters (Anastasia and Dmitri) don't even have an accent. I'm getting to see the broadway show next month! :)
