Mathew: "Are they reintroducing her to royal life or tricking her?"
People who've seen the film: "Uhh... 👁👄👁"
😂😂😂
"Both. Both is good."
Yes and yes
Yes.
Exactly
This movie is based on the real life Grand Duchess of Russia, Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova who was rumored to have escaped the murder of the Romanov family when she was 17 and this movie is about her return. Sadly the actual Anastasia's body was found and identified on 2007 confirming she in fact did not survive the massacre of her family.
Yup the whole family was shot , it's especially bad since.the family was shot because the ppl were mad about them being in charge ( simplified theres so much more) but the tsar already abdicated the throne
@@michaelortiz1561 mob's have no chill :(
One thing I don’t understand about the movie. Maybe I’m stupid but if Anastasia is practically heir to Russia how come in the end she was set to rule France?
her grandma was In Paris with a prize if someone brought anastasia to her I think @@lunarialoonatic
@@lunarialoonatic Now, I haven't watched it in a while, but I think what happened was she went to live with her living relative there, not to rule France.

No but literally why is Once Upon A December SO EFFING BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get goosebumps every single time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should see the stage version! Chills!!!
@@catherinewilson5441 Can't see it live, youtube's the best I can do 🥲
Same it's always made me cry ever since I was young
I KNOW!! I love that song so much :)
I sung it in choir once!! It’s amazing
To put it simply for the two in the first song, they're redeemable con-men, but unknowingly found the real amnesiac missing princess.
It's also a reference to a lady who was found that actually had amesisa and believed to be Anastasia at the time. One big difference between the movie and real life is that her dad's mother never actually met the woman claiming to be Anastasia.
@@user-en7hz9ko2xthat sounds like another film I’ve seen, but for the life of me, I can’t remember what it’s called. 😂
I think it’s a 60s film with someone that kinda looks like Hayley Mills, and she’s trained by someone to have memories of a certain lifestyle that might be hers. Like she’s supposed to be allergic to strawberries, and she remembers a loose brick in a fireplace.
@RabbitsFunWorld Yes, there is another one with Ingrid Bergman and yul brynner.
@@user-en7hz9ko2x okay, so you’re referring to another Anastasia film. I understand that there are other movies of the same topic, such as Anastasia, Cinderella, Snow White, and even Little Mermaid. I was referring to a completely different film that has a similar plot.
@@user-en7hz9ko2xI suppose this film is like a what if.
If you liked this, you should definitely check out songs from the Broadway version, they cut out the more mystical side and leaned into the history and have several more heartbreaking songs. In real life, for the longest time, Anastasia and her little brother Alexi were theorized to have escaped their family’s execution, however recent skeletal remains matching their descriptions were discovered near the original burial site. Her and her family’s fate has always been so intriguing and heartbreaking to me.
The stage musical is my friend group’s favorite musical and we literally listen to it every time we’re in the car together
In my dreams slaps 😂💖
The Broadway soundtrack is just perfection
In a Crowd of Thousands makes me cry every time, the way Dimitri sounds near the end!
@@KelilaBennet it's my fave from the Broadway music. It's just so so perfect and sweet.
Additional depressing context:
Every person in the ballroom scene of Once Upon a December is most likely dead. At least, every member of her family is.
It is based on a true story. The three women courtsying to her, and the little boy are her siblings, who were all killed during the russian revolution in the real life events. And of course, the man she is dancing with, is her father.
For a long time, Anastasia was believed to possibly have survived, since her corpse was not found with the others. Since the movie was made, however, her corpse was found and identified close to her brothers.
Actually, Anastasia was found a long time ago. They didn't know if the missing princess was Anastasia or Maria. When they found Alexei, they found the last princess. DNA evidence proved it to be Maria. At least the Romanov family is together now.
@@hazeli1313 Thank you for clarifying! It has been years since I read about the Romanov's, so I am sorry for getting that detail wrong.
If you pay attention to the floor of the Ballroom during this scene, you'll see Anastatia is the only one having a reflection.
And apparently there is a reason to why her brother is limping a bit during the song
in case it wasn't obvious, Anastasia is a movie based on the Grand Dutchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia. Who was killed (alongside her family) in 1918. Though after her death, rumours spread that she had somehow escaped. This caused several people to falsly claim to be Anastasia.
This movie is based on a more hopeful idea that Anastasia did live and managed to get back home, even though she didn't in history
They also changed her age, she was 16 when the family was killed not a small child as the movie portrayed
To be fair to the movie, her body wasn't found/ identified as her until 2007 so they probably did hope she was alive ♡
@@Thebeezzkneezz.Especially when you consider that Nicholas, Alexandra, and three daughters were discovered together in 1991 before the movie was made. It looked hopeful for awhile...

oh my god, i need another reaction to more of the music from this movie. it somehow has a whole other video's worth of great music. i definitely recommend:
"A Rumor in Saint Petersburg"
"Journey to the Past" (my FAVORITE song, and there's a version sung by Aaliyah too!)
"Paris Holds the Key (To Your Heart)"
and "Anastasia Dances with Dimitri" (definitely watch the whole movie clip. it makes me swoon and/or cry every time).
I was completely disappointed Journey to the Past wasn’t included-soooo good!
I'd also add the opening scene, for the 1st Once Upon a December & the story: ua-cam.com/video/QO7BwiT0V6w/v-deo.html , Kidnap & Reunion from the soundtrack: ua-cam.com/video/pwLWJAC57rw/v-deo.html & my personal favourite 'Finale': ua-cam.com/video/nqMDdcA9C_E/v-deo.html I know people dont really react to instrumentals but omg theyre phenomenal

Once Upon a December has one of my favorite scenes from any animated movie ever!
I was born in December on the 23rd , and many years ago, my great-grandmother gave me a beautiful fake teacup for my birthday. It played "Once Upon a December" when you pressed a button on the underside of the cup saucer. It no longer plays the song because of old age, but every time I look at that old teacup, I smile and softly hum "Once Upon a December" in my head as I think of my great-grandmother. RIP, Nana.
Stop you made my cry 😢
Anastasia and Treausure Planet are two movies that have my heart in a vice grip
SAME! Add Hercules and maybe even The Lion King to the list and you’ll have my all time favorite animated movies ever!
Same!! Treasure Planet 🤩

Atlantis, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Emperor's New Groove too, such underrated movies imo
HTTYD too maybe?
"I'm assuming the movie Anastasia is about someone called Anastasia."
About that...
Anya: who is this 'Anastasia' character you speak of?
I would honestly suggest watching the movie, not just for context, but also because it's quite an enjoyable watch from what I remember.
I rewatched it recently. It still is pretty good!!!
It goes without saying that the songs from "Anastasia" are absolutely iconic! Especially "Once Upon A December!" The voice actors all did amazing work!!!
If you like Anastasia's singing voice, the same singer was used for Princess Odette in The Swan Princess!
😎
You should react to that next!
She’s also Kiara’s singing voice from The Lion King 2.
Yes!!!! In the German language as well and I adore both princesses so much. Both movies are my childhood
Yes! Swan princess was my favorite movie as a kid, I even bought the soundtrack a few years ago cause I still listen to it today
Yes 💖
Omg two non-disney princess nostalgia films ❤
Anastasia is literally the best bc there is an undead sorcerer sending horrors after her and she does not know til the very end. She chalks all the bad things around her to bad luck and then at the end has to confront that 1. Magic is real 2. Her family she just found out about was killed by dark magic 3. She’s next. And she does but still it’s hilarious.
"sounds like high school musical" that chord progression sounded so much like the beginning of the chorus to the start of something new
Watching your reaction to Once Upon a December looked like you unlocked a core memory there lmao
"In the Dark of the Night" Audio intimidation factor: 🔥
"In the Dark of the Night" Visuals intimidation factor: 🤡
Don't get me wrong, the singing is straight amazing and even some of the visuals too, but man, the goof ass bugs always kill the mood a little xD
Mathew, I repectfully BEG YOU to listen to songs from the Anastasia Broadway musical! Also The Hunchback of Notre Dame stage musical. Like please. I am begging! They added some REALLY beautiful songs into those
I second this
Yes!!
Kinda shocked you didn't include "Journey to the Past" though this selection gave you the best variety so I also get it. Fantastic reaction! I do love the songs from this film and it was a joy to see you discover them!
If you're interested, I want to recommend a video by B-Mask called "The Musicals of Don Bluth" - whole thing is good, but the section on Anastasia has a chapter mark and he goes over some of the behind the scenes on the making of the music for this film and it's really interesting. (This isn't a reaction recommendation, btw, just something I thought a fellow musical lover would enjoy.)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this!
In once upon a time in December, yes that’s her dad (Tsar Nicolas II), the little boy is Alexei, Anastasia’s brother, the future Tsar of Russia (he’s limping bc he has hemophilia) and the other girls behind her dad and brother are Anastasia’s sisters.
In real Life, Rasputin wasn’t evil just a little bit weird and Anastasia’s mom wants him to help her son.
Here his story: ua-cam.com/play/PLKLxDLpQY5podTrdda1fOnobu1PXWR5CB.html&si=fqss0Xwq-kYQYb9x
I saw anastasia for the first time a few weeks ago and honestly as a villian song In the Dark of the Night freaking slaps
Dude, the orchestral surge at the end never fails to give me chills!
Basically in a nutshell - she's the lost princess but she has amnesia and has been in an orphanage for years. She ends up in the dusty palace and it feels familiar to her but she's found by 2 conmen who want to convince her she's the princess not knowing she really is. They want to take her to her grandmother (the only living member of her family who were massacred the night Anya got annesia) for a reward. But they slowly realize that she knows things they haven't told her and realize she's the real deal. It's AWEAOME. Also, the young servant boy who saved Anya from the massacre ends up being the conman and they fall in love.
The way i audibly gasped when I saw the thumbnail
Ok, so the plot of the movie is somewhat simple, but needs many words to explain. *Deep breath* SO
The plot is a heavily fictionalized version of the fall of the Romanov dynasty where Rasputin is an evil sorcerer who curses the family, and this causes them all to die except the grandmother (I dunno if that's historically accurate) and Anastasia (definitely not accurate) but she's separated from her grandma and gets amnesia, like you do. 10 years later and the Grandma has been offering a reward to anyone who can reunite her with her long lost granddaughter who she doesn't even know if she's alive or not. The two guys are con artists looking for an actress to play the role of Anastasia but Anya here IS the real Anastasia who has been living in an orphanage she just got kicked out of because she just turned 18. Anya wants to find her past and any family she may have and forgotten about, so she agrees to help them, not realizing they're con artists, because this is her only lead and the Grandmom is in paris, and her only item she has from before her memory loss is a necklace that reads "together in Paris." Also Rasputin is now a zombie and can't go to the after life until Anya is dead, so he makes several attempts throughout the movie to kill her
*breathes heavily*
Annastasia's body was found more recently.
@@adrianmcbride1666 Thanks much. My comment has been slightly edited for that info
I’m pretty sure the grandma is not included in his revenge plot because she is not a Romanov. She is the mother’s mother (I think).
She does have a grandmother that did survive. Although I can't remember if she was waving around a cash prize or not for her surviving family, there was several women that came forward pretending to be Anastasia. One in particular was so convincing that she actually got to stay with the extended family. She apparently new a lot of info and details of the royal family that would be difficult know get a hold of freely, and even on her deathbed insisted that she was the real deal. Of course we now we have clear evidence that she sadly did not survive the attack.
Bro, he literally said at the end of the video that these songs made him want to watch the full movie which means we'd be getting a much wanted reaction video to the whole thing. Why on earth would you post the whole plot? You're half-ruining a future video that a lot of us have already been asking for for a while 💀 Let him watch it and learn the plot on his own-- you know, like reaction channels are meant to do.
You should listen to journey to the past! Its such a beautiful song from the movie, definitely my favorite after once upon a December! :D
I agree I was so upset to see it wasn’t included. It is such a beautiful song
How come he didn't react to that song??? 😮😮😮😮😮
Yeah it's like the signature song of the movie surprised he didn't cover.
"I like her speaking voice" - that, sir, is because its Meg Ryan. She consistently sounds endearing. The large guy who speaks next, Vlad, is Kelsey Grammer and the love interest, Dimitri is John Cusack. Though Kelsey Grammer is the only one of the three who does both the speaking and singing for the character.
As for whether they're telling her the truth or tricking her - both? Lol. She IS the long lost princess, however they don't know for sure if she is or not, just that she looks like she is and that's all that really matters at first, haha.
Movie! Rasputin sold his soul for vengeance on the Romanov family, encouraged their destruction, and even though he 'died' he's currently in limbo, kind of undead. Its insinuated that his soul cannot actually rest until he fulfils the entire purpose he sold his soul for, i.e. kill all the romanovs.
Which they all were executed during the Russian revolution, save for Anastasia who managed to escape in this film, albeit fell and was injured in the process, and spent all her teen years with amnesia in an orphanage with no idea who she was. Her grandmother, who sought asylum in France, has a reward out for anyone who can find her and return her safely to her - ergo the chaos of 'potentially tricking her but actually telling her the truth' - it's more endearing than it sounds. Dimitri was a kitchen boy in the palace and helped her escape the siege.
it breaks your heart to know that they did find the missing daughter (could've been Anastasia or Maria) and Alexei in 2007. They didn't survive after all.
It was anastasia and her brother alexi. They weren't nice people in real life (there was a revelation for a reason), but they should have had a proper berial.
You have to do a part 2 with the other songs, along with the other songs they added to the live Broadway musical
The place where Rasputin was while singing the song is a purgatory. Rasputin ended up there after drowning at the beginning of the movie.
Technically, ‘tis limbo. He is suspended there. If you’re in purgatory, then you are headed to heaven, and, uh, having sold his soul to the devil and being unrepentant and all that, I rather doubt he would even want to be headed to heaven…. 😅

YES PLEASE
The movie is based on a real life person Anastasia who did die along side her family but the movie itself is based on the many imposters who claimed to be Anastasia
Until recently, no one new where the bodies of anastasia or her younger brother. There have been a few people who claimed to be her over the years. No one ever tried to claim they were her brother because even if he wasn't killed, he wouldn't likely have lived very long due to him having heamafilia. They were the great grandchildren of queen Victoria of England and most if not all of her children had the disease or were carriers. Only men get the symptoms, but women can pass it on to their sons.
I love Once Upon a December so much, and every time I watch the scene play, I cry. It hits so hard even as a kid with little understanding I cried, now as an adult with understanding I cry more.

You should definitely look into the stage musical they made for this story. The soundtrack to it is gorgeous! And it's more historically accurate compared to the movie. It includes some of the songs from the movie and it has a whole lot of other songs written just for the musical.
The guy who does the singing voice for Rasputin (Jim Cummings) I have actually met!! He is such a cool guy!! He also voices Tigger and Winnie the Pooh which I always find hilarious
The 🎶Once Upon A December🎶 song is especially heartbreaking when you realize everyone she danced with and the little kids where related to her. So, she was remembering her family, but she didn't realize who/what they meant to her. She has by far one of the most heartbreaking backstories compared to the rest of the Disney princesses.

I’m 40, and I am still obsessed with this film and story. I even saw the Broadway production when it came to Nashville. So good. And the layers grow with each watch.
Oh a dream has come true, I love this movie T~T. Literally my childhood :)
this is based on the rumor surrounding the Romanov family, after they were executed Anastasia and her brother Alexei’s bodies were never found. it was a rumor that she escaped and survived and there were a lot of fake Anastasias and actresses. This movie is particularly based on the most popular fake Anastasia, she had suffered some brain injury, looked like Anastasia and couldnt remember anything. Family members who knew Anastasia personally said she looked like her, but did not have the same personality and was not Anastasia. Sadly Anastasia and her brother Alexei’s bodies were found, they were separately disposed of and the fake Anastasia had suffered a brain injury working in a factory im pretty sure (?) still dont get why they made rasputin the villain tho 😭
Probably to make it more magical and kid friendly( in response to why they made Rasputin the villain)
Because if they wrote Lenin and other revolutionaries as the "vilains" people would (correctly) see them as the good guys.
Sooooo just a quick summary, the movie is loosely based on the events of the Romanov family, specifically the daughter Anastasia. in the movie when the coupe against the Romanovs happened Anastasia and her grandmother made it out of the palace and were going to flee, Ana got separated and hit her head causing amnesia, she was found and put in an orphanage since without memory she seemed to be just any other poor child. the movie fast forwards to Ana being 18, and sent to go join the working class and leave the orphanage. but something tell her to go on a different path, she meets those 2 guys who are looking to swindle the grandmother for a reward since she has been looking for her granddaughter this whole time. As luck has it they find the actual Anastasia but dont know its actually her, they just thought she looked the part and with her no memory they tricked Ana into thinking she was the lost princess so they could get the reward. hijinks happen, and the truth about her being the real lost princess comes out, she regains her memory, villain tries to kill her. yada yada happy ending
Once Upon A December and At The Beginning are my absolute favorite songs of the entire film honestly.
The dynamic friendship the trio has is chef's kiss
Oh man, Once Upon a December, In The Dark of The Night, are my all time favorites! And yes, I never fail to be deeply moved by Once Upon a December, it’s such a bittersweet song! 😭
Anastacia is my favorite movie of all time. I will die on the bridge that it is an absolute masterpiece .

They did a Broadway musical of this one. They only used 2 of the original movie songs, but the new ones are also gorgeous. "In a Crowd of Thousands" being my favorite.
The credit song was also sung by Christy Altomare ans Derek Klena from the Broadway musical at a Disney princess party. It's on UA-cam and it's beautiful!
Once upon a December is also really beautiful in French. I have heard an incredible version where the language keeps changing. Good good melody.
please do another video!! i would love to hear your opinion on "A Rumor In St. Petersburg" and "Journey to the Past", both incredible songs but also very different. "Journey to the Past" always gives me chills, the voice actress/singer kills it, and "A Rumor In St. Petersburg" is just plain fun (one of the few songs from this movie that i could sing from memory in both english and spanish (my native lenguage), cause i would have so much fun singing the different "parts" that i ended up memorizing it both as a kid watching the movie and then as an adult listening to the soundtrack). anyway love your reaction ❤ best wishes from Chile!
LETS GOOOO!!! I love Anastasia it’s so underrated. Top tier choice Mathew.
OMG this was my childhood😭❤️
Anastasia is my CHILDHOOD!!! I’m super close with my grandma, and to this day as a 29 year old I bawl my eyes out with her when we watch it together!
It's impossible not to cry listening to ONCE A DECEMBER. Anastasia is my favorite "princess" movie😢 ❤
So Anastasia lost her memory as a child and she’s trying to remember who she was. That’s where “Once upon a December” comes in. After that song ends and she’s caught in the palace that’s whenever Rasputin song comes in and he pretty much sold his soul for that curse and the curse was to kill the entire royal family. Dimitri’s goal was to trick Anastasia into being the lost princess so he can get money from the grandmother (who was able to escape the curse by being in Paris), and at one point Dimitri puts together that she really is the lost princess. And then Dimitri and Anastasia fell in love.
You gotta check out the broadway version!!! Its so so amazing and has added songs. One of my favorites (that also explains the story a bit more) is In My Dreams :)
The wide eyes at the slow realisation of what song he's listening too~
I saw this movie when it came out and TO THIS DAY I still will randomly start singing "Once Upon a December", "At the Beginning", "In the Dark of the Night" and "Journey to the Past" (Both versions are SO good. I miss Aaliyah). They get stuck in my head at the most random intervals and its been over 20 something damn years. 😭
Mathew earnestly telling the audience to reevaluate if we ever find ourselves in our own evil lairs with walls of skulls is giving major Bartok vibes. 😂
If you ever cover this movie again, "A rumor in St Petersbourg" Is a BOP ! Are some songs from the musical too.
that one is better in the musical definitely
So sad he didn't include "Paris Holds the Key" or whatever that song was during the Paris fashion montage with Sophie! It was one of my favorite songs and musical numbers bc of the glitz and glamor of it, it makes me feel like I'm visiting Paris again. It makes me feel posh and elegant! 😆
Flinching isn't always a trauma thing. I can just be the result of being startled, even if only mildly, as part of that instinctual "fight or flight" thing or that whole "Wait, are they talking to me?(when it sounds like it & you're not expecting it)" thing.
I grew up with Anastasia and I would love to see you react to the whole movie it's so ridiculously good
Anastasia is easily one of the best princess movies out there, because of the animation quality, the voice acting, the songs, the plot, and just the overall vibes it has. You can tell the people who worked on it were really having fun
Where is "Journey to the past" it's so beautiful too. Love Anastasia ❤
At the beginning is one of my favorite songs from this movie!
I always loved the music/song that plays during the beginning when the palace is under attack and Anastasia is fleeing with her grandmother
I can’t believe not everyone had a phase obsessed with the real life romanov’s story. Like you not knowing what this is about even if you have never watched the movie is CRAZY to me.
"Is this genuine encouragement or tricking her?" The answer is both😁
This movie is my childhood, I watch this every time I’m sick or emotional and need to cozy up on a couch with a good movie. I know it all off by heart.
