The Pat's Rubberleg Stonefly is a pattern that works well anywhere there is cold clean water filled with trout and a large stonefly population, including the Montana backcountry.
The New Englinad IPA, Deep Backcountry, was the perfect beer to enjoy while tying up a few flies and really captured the spirit of our last video. • Solo Backpacking in th...

I love your UA-cam channel. I'm headed to Montana in August. Question: does the Pats Rubber leg the best Fly to take in August to Montana? Other fly pattern?

Nice job great video. By the way bought a Hyde Drift boat spending 2022 in Montana and Idaho. No doubt we will be throwing a lot of pats rubber legs. 5 months of drifting at age 67 hard to keep a retired central PA boy off the water.

Great content. I prefer to have my legs and chenille extend to the back. You do three wraps with the legs on the side extended a pinch. Tighten the wraps onto the chenille and do three more warps atop the other wraps and it give it so much more wiggle.
I also use jigs to lessen the snags. Seems to help.

Do you always use barbless hooks? Just curious. I know it tends to be less damaging to the fish but can sometimes result in losing one.

Not always, but I prefer barbless. I feel that I tend to get better hook penetration and the gap on the jig hooks is slightly larger than on standard hooks. I also find that when I accidentally hook my clothes or pack it's easier to remove. As far as landing fish goes I haven't noticed a major difference but I'm sure that there may be one or two extra fish that may get away. Good question though

Looks good Doug. Looks a little like a Bitch Creek, only a lot easier to tie.
