This Rosh Hashanah will usher in the Sabbatical year in Israel, where the bible commands us to let the land rest every seventh year. This video will show how the sabbatical year, or the shmita, is observed in KKL-JNF forests and nurseries.

Nice info; thanks for the work in sharing. I would love to see the principle of Shmita explored as an environmental principle for land management. It would have to be in rotation with other plots of land and people such as environmentalists would need to have an invite to assist in promoting the practice. Most of the world is not of Jewish decent, but many of us have a respect for the teachings. The world could benefit from a promo of the upcoming Shmita in the Hebrew year 5782; to begin in the western world's September 2021 if I'm not mistaken. As an environmentalist, it seems this model would be fantastic to prevent land erosion, sequester carbon if there were plants volunteering on the land. And, if the beasts could graze freely there, it would introduce new well fertilized seed to build up nutritional and mineral diversity in the soil. As a non-religious person, I don't understand why this principle could not be applied more broadly and a rotation of Shmita applied to the land to help sequester carbon and reduce erosion. Modern farming is too thorough with tilling and tight management. The lack of any remaining unharvested plant also leads water away from our aquafers. Without root systems, the run off of water will result in great disasters; dead soil and dust bowls or desertification. During the black plague, the world community turned to Hebrew cleanliness laws with great success. It seems worth pursuing Hebrew principles when faced with climate change.

***** G-D gave the land to the Jews. If you don't like what G-D did, take it up with Him.

***** G-D has done that. The universe belongs to Him, and He does what pleases Him without any concern for your opinion.

But there is totally no merit in youse getting all wound up with wholististical idealism and to go rushing off to Israel to plant trees. The Israelis are quite capable of managing their own Shabbazzicals without you all trying to bungle about in there.
