  • Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) is a highly intelligent and still-striking beauty - the perfect devoted wife. Forty years spent sacrificing her own talent, dreams and ambitions to fan the flames of her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his skyrocketing literary career. Ignoring his infidelities and excuses because of his "art" with grace and humor. Their fateful pact has built a marriage upon uneven compromises and Joan's reached her breaking point. On the eve of Joe's Nobel Prize for Literature, the crown jewel in a spectacular body of work, Joan's coup de grace is to confront the biggest sacrifice of her life and secret of his career. "The Wife" is a poignant, funny and emotional journey; a celebration of womanhood, self-discovery and liberation. Close, Pryce, Christian Slater, Annie Starke & director Björn Runge stopped by BUILD to discuss the film.

Excellent film. Love how this film delves into the dynamics of this couple. The nuances in Glenn Close’s expressions are beyond Oscar-worthy. Wake up, Academy!

Agreed. Close is a tour de force. One of the greatest actors to grace the screen.

I loved how they incorporated the scenes from young to old too. When they jump on the bed together shouting 'we're getting published' and then as an older couple they do it again only this time there is no 'we' and it's 'I've won the Nobel Prize.'

She’d better win the Oscar this time.

This movie is about a Narcissistically abusive relationship.
Finally, a movie about a very real topic and issue.

Glenn Close made a powerful award-winning performance on delicate equality themes... "Look at the vegetable and the animal worlds. The palm which carries the fruit is the tree most prized by the date grower. The Arab knows that for a long journey the mare has the longest wind. For her greater strength and fierceness, the lioness is more feared by the hunter than the lion." ~ Baha'i Faith

A really solid movie, though it there seemed to be a small number of scene's reminiscent to A Beautiful Mind. Maybe too similar, in particular, the prize winning speech.

An Oscar for Glenn and for writing and direction as well! Therapists around the world should have a field day with this great film because this is your classic malignant Narcissism/sociopathic vs empathetic/HSP/co-dependent paradigm that is so prevalent in society even worldwide and has been ever since this has been a patriarchal society and the patriarchal organized religions which breed that paradigm! Put your "sacred feminine" on the back burner for the most part even if you have a college education, degree and career/job, his is more important! You're only half a human until you get married and become whole and refer to him as your " better half"!! Can work the other way around as well but therapists say it's more prevalent in men i.e. male entitlement! We're seeing it now in the White House! Went through it myself for 42 years until death did us part! WHY Al-anon exists as well! Bravo Glenn, remember seeing her on Broadway in "Barnum" in the 1980s, beautiful singing voice as well! Time for that old out of date paradigm to shift, big time! Ironically, met my late husband in a psyche course at a university in NYC in 1973 called "Changing Sexual Roles in Contemporary America"...guess what? The roles haven't changed much and not enough!!

There are a lot of disturbing dialogue for women in this movie. The one that gets me is when he says "Do do this to me." like he is some freaking baby and she is his mother. It's disgusting for a man to want and expect "The Wife" to mother him especially while he has a communal d**k. A-hole!
Women stop making kings out of weak narcissist men who have no intention of honoring you as his Queen.
    What's your favorite and why?
