  • The energy giant Centrica, which owns British Gas, tripled its profits last year to more than £3 billion - despite the squeeze on consumers hit by soaring bills - with some vulnerable households forced onto prepayment metres.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
The firm said it would be paying one billion pounds in tax.
But its chief executive declined to say if he would waive any of his £1.6 million bonus.

Whilst he hasn't mentioned it, not sure why, Labour's plan was set out fairly clearly at the last conference, which was to create GB Energy. A publicly owned green energy company which would compete with the likes of Centrica/British Gas, with the aim of driving the cost to the end user down, forcing those other companies to lower their prices or risk having no customers as people switch to GB Energy. It has the added benefit of job creation too, creating a robust industry in this country around re-usable energy, wind, tidal and solar, which (maybe not the last one haha) we have in abundance. I think it's a good idea, a definite step in the right direction, and I'd love to see it in action. We cannot carry on the way we are now.

UK natural gas futures were trading around 135 pence a therm, close to levels not seen since September 2021 and down over 80% from their March peak of 800 pence, as a relatively mild winter limited the need for extra heating demand and prospects of robust wind power generation pressured prices further. On top of that, Norwegian exports increased after the end of an unplanned outage. Dwindled stockpiles of Russian natural gas have been replenished by liquid natural gas (LNG), alleviating immediate supply issues. The US has agreed to raise natural gas exports to the UK as part of a joint effort to reduce costs and limit Russia's impact on western energy supplies. Looking ahead, supply risks and price volatility will likely persist next winter since talks between the UK government and Centrica, the nation's biggest energy supplier, on funding the expansion of its natural gas storage have stalled.

@tonybum100 Unfortunately, it's not about people. It's about control over the european market. The only way america and its failing economy could dominate the European market was to remove russia, which it did by proposing nato missile bases in ukraine, causing the desired reaction from russia, destroying nordstream 2 in the process, which ironically would have provided eourope with cheaper energy than ever before. Now they have American LNG at quadruple the price. Predatory capitalism to save a sinking ship not worth saving imo.

It isn't the role of private business to look out for the social good, manage people's bills, help the poor or any of the malarkey discussed in this video.
That's what politicians are for, and why taxes are paid. Governments looking to put a cap on profits through "windfall taxes" are acting in desperation because they have no real solutions, but ultimately do harm to the economy by disincentivizing localised investment.
Nationalisation of energy generators won't solve the problems AT ALL. The problem for the UK is it lacks energy resources of it's own in any significant quantities. That makes the UK reliant on foreign partners and international markets, the UK isn't making the rules here.
Real solutions come in the form of aggressive electrification of the energy grid to all but entirely remove gas from the network. Set a no gas date, re-enforce consumer subsidies and move forward with determination. Fund councils so that council flats can ALL be upgraded within the next 24 months.
It's pointless even discussing things like renewables or alternative energy sources when 80% of the grid can't benefit from the electricity they generate because it's gas reliant. That's the heart of the issue, everything else is band aid solutions and empty whinging.
Remove the price cap, use that money to fund electrification.
