On the property we had a huge dirt mound that was later to become the foundation for a house. This mound instantly became Tatooine. Time wore on and the dirt began smelling kinda funky, but we couldn't figure it out. One day my brother and I were busy defeating The Empire when one of our cats crept up dug a hole , and proceeded to take a leisurely dump while watching us play with that bemused "Hey what's up guys? You too?" look on it's face. We abandoned Tatooine and went looking for Endor. True story.

To be fair, the original packaging only read "X-wIng Fighter". It was never specifically stated that this was Luke's own Red-5. The inclusion of R2-D2 implies that it was Luke's X-wing, but droid copilots are as interchangeable as the pilot. Interestingly, the R2-D2 figure is seen sitting next to th X-wing on the box picture for The Empire Strikes Back release of the X-wing toy. Is this another Kenner gaffe, or evidence that the droid permanently fixed to the X-wing is not R2?

If Kenner had more sense, they would have included a selection of stripes so you can choose whose X-Wing it is. It would also encourage kids to buy more than one so that they can have different stripes on each.
Luke in X-Wing pilot gear was the second ever figure I got (the first was Boba Fett), but as soon as I got a selection of other Luke's, that figure became either Dack or Wedge.

Never noticed the part about the stripes - going to have to re-watch ANH now. I had this back in the 70's. We didn't care about detail back then because we knew that the difference between the X-Wing in the movie (and the lunchbox, and the posters, and T-Shirt, and about anywhere else you could find a picture of an X-Wing) was going to be a big one. If you wanted an accurate looking X-Wing, you built a model of one (MRC had a snap-tite version for RotJ), or you waited until the SW resurgence in the 1990's and got one of teh toy X-wings they made then. I also had the Luke X-wing figure - since most people had (or had seen) the Luke Tatooine figure, it was clear that that that wasn't his hair poking out the helmet.

By the time Return Of The Jedi came out and I was able to buy a second Luke in X-Wing pilot gear action figure I pained a mustache on Luke and called it Biggs. I was so happy to see years later that Biggs was made into an action figure for me to add to my Star Wars collection. The downside, I found out my homemade Biggs woulda been worth some good money in today's market if I left it as Luke. Fun video. One thing about the 70s and early 80s was that attention to detail by toy companies was not a big deal back then. They didn't take any of it too seriously, resulting in all the odd details we all hyper-examine for entertainment today. I was just happy to have an X-Wing and the "Death Star" that odd playset that was like a tiny slice of the sphere. Some kid stole my trash compactor monster, though. I finally got another one at a garage sale years later. The trash compactor came with a pile of oblong foam pieces to simulate garbage. I wonder if anyone has any of the original foam bits or if they have devolved into unrecognizable globs by now?

I noticed the stripe details when I got it on DVD and thought it was just missing the other stripes due to damage. As for the Kenner version, I figured since the toy wasn't proportional to the real model, I assumed there wasn't enough space for the extra two stripes to make it look symmetrical and didn't think anything else of it, but the model kit I built was proportional and had five stripes; I don't remember if the model had any other stripe configurations, that was about 40 years ago.
I noticed when watching the movie the callsigns go Red Leader (Red 1) up to Red 11 and skip Red 8 but didn't see any more than five stripes on any X-Wing and I did see a one-stripe and three-stripe also. I'm assuming the remaining space for one or two more stripes would be added to the other stripes before moving to the other blank area within that decal area for more stripes.

Very entertaining. I love the Star Wars lunch box. I have the same one that my mother bought for me when I was a child of six years old - if I remember correctly. It may have been 1979 - when I was five. Either way it's still in mostly very good condition with the original thermos that came with it. This is when Thermos brand made lunch boxes. You'd be hard pressed to find this today without spending a lot of money. I too had the gray one and yes, I too hated the fake R2 unit that never had any detail and was not removable as Wylde Bill below has said. No argument there! I also noticed the Red 3 markings. God forbid should they spend any money making an truly accurate X-wing fighter! Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us.

The only thing that I noticed as a kid is that my X-Wing didn't have a light or sound. Even tough it said so, in Dutch (!), on the back of the "12 back". Grrrrrrr. Thanks Palitoy/Clipper.

I'm more concerned as to what went wrong in FX-7's career that he's been demoted from medical duties to refuelling...'5 years of medical training for this!'

Yeah it was never made obvious that the call signs matched up with markings to indicate squad members, at least for me, until new release lego x wings last 24 months

Also the ends of the wing-tip blasters are rotated through 90°: they should be vertical when the wings are closed.

As a kid I don't even think I realized I could put a figure in it LOL

I still have my x-wing. I lost the cannons though because I taped them to two toilet paper rolls to make the Cygnus sentry laser pistols from Black Hole. The best thing about those Kenner ships was the buzzing noise and LED light. Hasbro is too snobby to redo them like that which is just them throwing away money, if you ask me

Back in the day nobody would gave any attention to this, the kids wanted to play with the Xwing toy and that was that.Nowadays we as grown ups can nitpick almost everything, like for instance my super 7 toxic crusader is detailed from the movie but also based in the cartoon show for instance and stuff! Stuff that the companies those years might care because they referring also to bigger ages as well, but back then even the companies didn't do for the obvious reason of selling the product first asked questions much later! 😅 This is good to know and learn from you even though i am a fan,i was never go that deep to search for stuff like that except some other stuff i also like.I consider the star wars lore really deep which i never dig up so much to check the differences here and there to tell you the truth! But i thank you for making this video showing us around kenner's mishaps in details this is really informative!

I used to just make believe it was an early version of an X Wing designed from the Z-95 , just went with it 🔥😂, & early R2 unit was built into the ship
    Eventually, better models came out

    That's a good trivia question.
How many red stripes are there on Luke's X Wing toy?

  • @jerryrichburg2458
    @jerryrichburg2458 3 роки тому

Very informative as usual. Maybe if you did notice you could have added two stripes and made it Luke's. Seems like it was a great idea to make it Biggs starfighter and sell two. I wasn't spoiled so I never had that privilege. I couldn't have but 2 stormtroopers. My mom always said " you already have that one!" I explained the role of stormtroopers to my father once and he understood. If Daddy saw a stormtrooper at k-mart he would pick it up to add to me and Vader's force. Anyway thanks for the time, effort, and laser like attention you give to the passion of star wars collecting. I look forward to seeing more.

I wish I had the original C-Wing with just the Star Wars branding. Most of my vehicle toys ate from the Empire Strikes Back boxed era. I have the X-Wing. But mine came with the battle damage stickers. I should have left them off so that it looked just like the more plain original X-Wing. But back then I was just a kid who wanted to play with the toys.

C-wing? Fingers too big, because the X is next to the C. If not I want one of those C-wings too.

Good find! My personal theory-- Kenner designers probably felt there wasn't room to elegantly fit five stipes on the stubbier wings the toy had, compared to the movie model. I mean, they *would* fit, but they would take up way more room proportionately than five stripes did on the film model

  • @jahmd8377

I never noticed the stripes on the x-wing. I wonder how much of the ancillary material from that time had that detail ( my guess is none). Also, was this detail present in the original version or was it added to the Special Edition? Good thing I’m off of work this week, you’ve given me a lot to ponder.

I paused the review, so don't hate on me y'all. That firsr minute and a half was a sobering reminder of how much I used to enjoy my figures and ship. Am going to try and re-create this nostalgia w/Legacy Falcon and my prized 3.75" Vintage collection figures this week!

Dun dun dun. It’s X-Wing Fighter, new from Kenner’s Star Wars collection. Figures sold separately, you have to put it together. “X-Wing prepare for take-off, ambush the Empire!” X-Wing has retractable s-foils and working lights and sounds. X-Wing Fighter, Luke X-Wing Pilot figure sold separately. New from Kenner.
