The new unit they added in the build is I think the best example of the critiques I spoke about in the video that Grubby posted before this one. It has more coloring to it, it has red, brown and golden coloring on it and it's easier to identify with its spider legs cause the model is more fleshed out. The Vanguard units seem more fleshed out in that regard. The Infernal units have a bigger problem with that. The new unit they added should be a example to to them for future builds in how to make readability of infernal units better.
Looks better each time! One thing I hope is that there won't be so much focus on drops/eco harass as in SC2. To me, it was overemphasized in SC2, and it just made the game more frustrating and stressful. In that game, the focus on harassment may have been necessary in order to encourage player interaction, but I'm hoping the existence of creep camps in this game encourages small skirmishes on the map instead, like WC3
game looks really cool so far, i cant wait to see what other units they'll add in the future! flayed dragons are a super cool concept but sounds like it falls short easily
Not sure why people think the instant unit production is weird they are exactly a combination of warpgates for protoss with the instant build time and the cap of 3 units stored up like larva for zerg. You ARE losing production technically by allowing a building to reach 3 stacks like hatcheries but you also have the warpgate tactic where once you're pop capped you can build extra production buildings so once your army dies you can instantly remax. (But at least you can't warp your entire army onto a pylon like protoss.)
I can really see the potential in this games battles. I hope they stick the landing and are able to create a full package that brings in everybody because they’re competing with their own past creations that have the art direction/lore/cultural cache/esports history. It’s going to take a lot of convincing / something special to get people to shift where they spend their time. I think that’s why there’s so many negative comments. Why play this when insert other rts like SC2, wc3, aoe2, all are such strong visual works with robust gameplay and communities. I think people want something new that they can love whole heartedly.
So far I really like the aesthetics of the infernal host, and some of the units of the human vanguard I just think the human units are too generic looking in a way where generic demonic units have a lot of flair still the humans are kinda boring…
This game feels like it doesn't have much of a soul, and that's not just the graphics but the general flavour and art direction. It's not original, it's not distinct, it's not rich in background, it's not well thought-out. Some may say that doesn't matter for an RTS, but Warcraft 3 is so special because it has outstanding art direction and lore on top of great gameplay.
I totally get where you're coming from. This game just doesn't seem to have that special something that sets it apart. Warcraft 3 nailed it with its outstanding art direction and deep lore, making it a truly unique experience. I feel like this one falls short in terms of originality and background richness. A game's soul is often shaped by its distinctive qualities, and in this case, it seems to be lacking that extra layer that makes it truly memorable. I agree with your point about Warcraft 3 - it's a perfect example of how exceptional art and lore can elevate the gaming experience beyond just great gameplay.
I just played the beta before the steam fest, honestly the direction they are taking seems promising but at the same time it is worrisome, because you might not know once the tier 3 units are done, they will not do anything about the artstyle and just move on to the next faction. Also another nitpick of mine is Vulcan from human vanguard, a machine that is holding a minigun that cant target air unit looks and feels unrealistic, it is a tier 2 unit and you are telling me this *Advanced unit* cant target air just because of balance ? It takes the fun out of the game and feels like you can only play certain optimal build to win and it's gonna get old and stale pretty fast because you are expected to build a certain units to win. This game definitely needs a lot more work, fine tuning, animation, color palate to even call it an inspired spiritual successor and they are on the right track, just needs time to cook :)
It reminds me of the WH40k Dawn of war series... I would love to see you play that! The unification mod is easy to install and there is a small, but active scene with tournaments and stuff.
I wonder if they could add a short warp in timer/animation in response to what Grubby said about the infernal units spawning in to counter everything. Could add a cool spawning from hell animation like the buildings too.
Definitely has potential but the buildings and units need a little more personality. They feel very generic so far. The buildings and units in War2 and War3 felt like they told their own little stories and I think this game needs that same extra touch.
I really dislike the Starcraft styled health bars they have over units. I hope there's an option for modern styled health bars with team colors that are smooth and not divided into small bits.
Hope for future updates this message ressonates a bit with devs: The world didnt need another SC clone. If SC would have succeeded in this genre and current state of gaming it would still be super popular. It needed innovation, a re take on the war3 type genre of heroes and items and combt in a RTS and innovating on that as an example to a modern game. But yeah, just the same old stuff, I can't see it succeeding after the initial honeymoon period
So well said. Instead of the failure that SC2 is, they should have taken a look at War3 and BW. War3, in a twist of fate has turned into Baldur's Gate 3. That game feels a lot like what a next Warcraft campaign should feel like, minus all the fun RTS time. This game is a flop right after people realize it's just a worse SC2 at best.
I mean... SC2 kinda blew the genre up, and killed the competition. The fact is, it's a 14 year old game with no updates in years and i can still find matches instantly, i have no idea how people book that as a failure. It was a massive success. It's one of the best selling games in the genre's history.
Not compelling in its current iteration. Needs an answer to the question "why would i play this" because currently all i see is what other RTS games did 10+ years ago, except now i can experience it in a world i dont care about with weak graphics and sound design
The game feels a bit incomplete imo. I hope they add more in the future. Also the game should have an interesting lore for everyone to enjoy giving head canons for.
The perspective of the camera is really strange. Most RTS games look at everything under a shallow angle, this angle is so steep. On one hand it makes ramps leading Down from a higher platform in the North vector possible, on the other hand it looks like you are watching everything from a top down view. I think the immediate unit production comes from worms at the zerg hive... Except you have one hive, and 20 barracks... :/
This just looks like another Starcraft or AoE. Big armies, huge fights, everything dies within a millisecond with fireworklike animations. As a viewer i have no idea what´s going on. In WC3 for example i can see when a unit is pulled out of a fight or one i repositioned. All i "see" here is 100 pop amires A-clicking.
Would it be cool to get factions within factions or variants with their own models and skins? Like they have butchers replacing brutes and balrogs or fire golems instead of reavers?
After reading the many comments that have similar sentiment, i think i know what everyone's issue is this. Its pretty simple, its a NEW RTS that is not BW, SC2, wc3, AoE or anything else. So with a new IP, it doesn't have the same commitment that players have to older titles, which is impossible because, again its brand new. The way this game will really get sold is the single player campaign that's going to hook people into the story and units so you build up that relationship and love for the game like the giants that came before it. From a multiplayer/esports perspective, this needs to do really well and be strictly mechanical gameplay with competitive meta strategies since most of those players dont always play the campaign for the story. It needs to look good enough for the esports scene but the balance and starts have to be on parr as well as ve designed for minimal lag. The last thing that this has going against it is a smaller niche player base since RTS is aged and over the last 10 years - its all mobile knock offs StarCraft basically. Some of the aspects of this do resemble some of those F2P/P2W terrible mobile games, but even SC2 minimized some macro actions such as auto mining at the start. These can be looked at quality of life improvements for the genre. BUT i feel there is a great demand of RTS and in gaming, whats old is new, especially because of the mobile scene being watered down and even afk based games (which doesn't make sense to me). I guess one other comment i had, i was hoping that the graphics would have been muchhh better and sci-fi. Its really hard to make things out. Grubby could be playing on lower graphics and not everything could be updated for the alpha/beta so im hoping the release and the campaign will improve this. On a last note, my gaming PC is about 10 yrs old with an SLI build and it probably would only run this game on low graphics buttt you know, i liked playing SC2 on ultra graphics. Still kinda excited for this. Hopefully the campaign has a really cool storyline.
People are used to sc2 and wc3's quality when it comes to rtses and it shows. I hate how negative people are abiut this game. I think it's going to be great
Im not sure how to feel about this game. Itis visually very flat and unstylised, as if it didnt have proper lighting or depth. Also i don't see a particular tie or inclination to play any of the factions, they are all just kinda eh. Pacing seems alright tho and the mechanics are kinda cool.
I don't like the artstyle, colors in particular seem subdued if that's the correct word. In wc3 the graphics feel a lot more alive and yet accessible so I dont get the explanations here that they aim for visibility etc There's creeping but there's no heroes for whatever reason? Not sure about this game as it is looking like a worse sc2 and a worse wc3 at the same time I guess i'd prefer if it was just a spiritual wc3 successor. modernized, with a little better pathfinding, mechanic improvements etc. heroes is what could draw casual attention. pure rts without the heroes is unfortunately dead
Is it just me or this game is just another plain RTS with merely little mechanics to do around, maybe the creeping aspect could use more details and competition to it

I agree that there's something about Stormgate that lacks... soul? Coherency? Bold art direction? It's like they tried to blend Warcraft and Starcraft, only in Fortnite/Overwatch art style, and something about it feels just off. Anyway, there was an RTS game in the prehistoric setting called ParaWorld released in 2006. Not exceptional, but pretty fun, quite Age of Empires-y in terms of design - and with dinosaurs! It's a shame none else explored this idea in an RTS after that. And then, there's the legendary Original War from 2001, a cult classic in Europe, so many cool ideas in that game.
