Thank you so much for this. I've been learning Chinese seriously for 2 months now, and I've just finished HSK 1. I'm taking private lessons once a week and gaining tons of input from podcasts, videos, and TV shows. My Chinese teacher has praised me greatly for speaking the tones so well and having fantastic vocab recall. People keep asking me "Why Chinese?" And I respond, "why not?!" There are SO many benefits to learning this language. Plus I genuinely enjoy the process of it. Soon, I'll be one of the few people who will be able to say I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese!
Even though I can read and write Chinese,, I am still learning characters that I am not familiar with and I just love the beautiful Chinese poems and proverbs, using the proverbs properly in a dialogue takes you to another level.
I have only studied spoken chinese for about a year and then lost motivation and put it off. I now restarted learning this time seriously, as I realized the benefits of knowing chinese. I noticed that even though the jobs I'm interviewed for are not related to language or education at all, the interviewers (I live in an arab country) always get amazed when they see chinese as a language skill listed in my cv. I'm now motivated and learning the writing and all on my own. Also, korean will be after :)
Nr. 1: Economy & Business (In the future, you will probably need some level of China as a business language.) Nr. 2: Literature & Philosophy (Your way of thinking will change due to the rich literature and different philosophy and culture.) Nr. 3: Self-esteem (You will gain respect from others by gaining a new skill and having achieved a high level in it. By getting feedback from others, this will also change how you see yourself. You will also learn how to be patient and set and realize long term goals.) Nr. 4: Opens up a new world (Speaking Chinese opens up a huge amount of new contacts and connections. Romantic possibilities included.) Nr. 5: Basis for learning other Asian languages (70% of the vocab of Korean and Chinese are overlapping. It will also be easier to learn Japanese, since they are using hanzi for writing as well.) Bonus: It is fun!
I'm ethnically Chinese born and raised in the Philippines. My ancestral province is in Fujian China, which I have never visited before. The people there speak the Hokkien dialect, which is what my family speaks. Although my family is encouraging me to learn Mandarin more, so here I am. :D I have a background since I studied in a Chinese High School, but I'm still not fluent, but enough to get around Hong Kong and Taiwan. tried and tested. loved ur saying "plan a thing for years", im doing spanish atm for almost 1.5 year and i set my goal to be fluent or be at least advanced and comfortable at the language 2 years from now even if it sounds easy language things take time and your mind need some time to learn and adjust to new language.

100% agree about looking at things in terms of years. So many people these days looking for hacks to learn stuff. There are no hacks for language learning. You either put in the _years_ it takes, or you lose. It's probably more like decades, but 'years' is another way to describe it, haha. Good vid. 👍

More important? Totally depends what your goals are right? For example, if you're planning on doing business in Spain or with Latin America, then don't learn Chinese. As for the benefits of learning Chinese, that's exactly what the video is about 🙂

Thanks for your comment. Glad the video was useful. I would definitely say that Mandarin is more useful than Cantonese. Cantonese is mainly spoken in Hong Kong where English is widely spoken. I've only ever known foreigners learn Cantonese as a cool 'party trick'. Don't listen to advice from your Chinese lodger. A lot of what Chinese people told me about learning Chinese turned out to be inaccurate: "you need to learn 100,000 characters to really understand Chinese" etc etc.

In Mexico they have companies that employ many .To me has he said if I learn Chinese I will have most of the world to talk to. Choose what you are after and how you think it will benefit you,or fulfill your own interest.French a pretty language,German just a few millions,Italian the same. Japan is not as big investor ,and is also very small.To me there are more chances of working for your own Country's companies as they deal with manufacturing with China.If one chooses to learn their language.
What's the use of learning Japanese language when the Japanese people are becoming extinct? By 2050, they may not be any japanese. Plus, if you use, it will be in just that small country. With chinese language, you'll be able to speak to over 1 billion people and have high chances of being employed.

@@hhattonaom9729 Haha, funny you should say that. That's what I was saying to my BJJ professor. You learn the set moves (side control, arm bar, omoplata etc.) and memorize them. This is your vocab. Then you learn to fluently string them together into "sentences".
@@ChineseIsEasy true, the steps you have to memorize...then become sub conscious (like speaking fluently). and we can improve faster in bjj through spaced repetition (drilling, instruction) just like in language...also the more emotion involved in the process the better you remember what you need to know. competition is the best way to never make the same mistake again much like speaking in a foreign language...yah just lots of similarities when u think about it. hang loose.
nice, I'm a blue belt and you? currently i'm looking for a new language to learn and i'm not sure which one yet, i'm interested in Japanese and Chinese. I think if i learn Japanese first, then Chinese will be easier, or vice versa. i love both languages though, so i'm looking forward to learn both. do you have any advice?
I'm only a 3-stripe white belt :( I would have thought a good grounding in Chinese characters would help you learn elements of Japanese, as opposed to vice versa.

There are so many meaning and pronunciation in a single Chinese character but it is the feature of the Chinese.

Should I live in china and connect with locals to learn quickly Mandarin ?
Iv lived here for 3 years (Shenzhen) and my Chinese is still bad :/ but it does help some people learn it really fast

Ertix For me China will be and has become a world investor.Truth to say they learn whatever language they need. In Mexico they have companies that employ many .To me has he said if I learn Chinese I will have most of the world to talk to. Choose what you are after and how you think it will benefit you,or fulfill your own interest.French a pretty language,German just a few millions,Italian the same. Japan is not as big investor ,and is also very small.To me there are more chances of working for your own Country's companies as they deal with manufacturing with China.If one chooses to learn their language.
What's the use of learning Japanese language when the Japanese people are becoming extinct? By 2050, they may not be any japanese. Plus, if you use, it will be in just that small country. With chinese language, you'll be able to speak to over 1 billion people and have high chances of being employed.

@@hhattonaom9729 Haha, funny you should say that. That's what I was saying to my BJJ professor. You learn the set moves (side control, arm bar, omoplata etc.) and memorize them. This is your vocab. Then you learn to fluently string them together into "sentences".
@@ChineseIsEasy true, the steps you have to memorize...then become sub conscious (like speaking fluently). and we can improve faster in bjj through spaced repetition (drilling, instruction) just like in language...also the more emotion involved in the process the better you remember what you need to know. competition is the best way to never make the same mistake again much like speaking in a foreign language...yah just lots of similarities when u think about it. hang loose.

currently i'm looking for a new language to learn and i'm not sure which one yet, i'm interested in Japanese and Chinese. I think if i learn Japanese first, then Chinese will be easier, or vice versa. i love both languages though, so i'm looking forward to learn both. do you have any advice?

I would have thought a good grounding in Chinese characters would help you learn elements of Japanese, as opposed to vice versa.
