Watching this over again, you begin to realise, how we see our parents. They’re from another era, we think of them as people living in our time but really as we grow older like they do, they’re actually people who are living out of their time. We forget that. Monroe didn’t think it’d be a problem for his parents because they’re good people, he’s always know that they were, but they are living with values fundamentally different from what the values of the day are and like many of us we assume our parents will just step in line with now. It’s not the way it works, very few people in the older generation know how to handle the change in values and the change is hard on families. This was equal measures hard to watch as it was relatable to any group of people growing up today.
Values change, which is something that pretty much everyone understands usually (with some exceptions of course). What a lot of younger people (me included when I was in my teens) forget or don't realize is that the older generations already saw changes - and whether those changes had overall good or bad effects, be it for them personally, be it for their families and friends, be it for the entire society, ... So when someone sees a change that is comparable to a change they already witnessed, and that change had an overall negative outcome _in their experience,_ then they'll oppose it since they have good reason to believe that the younger generation doesn't grasp the full consequences of that change. The worse the perceived effects, the stronger the opposition. The problem of course is that one change won't necessarily have the same effects in a different time, where a lot of circumstances have already changed... It's all far, _far_ too complex for anyone to understand, and we have a strong tendency to rely on our "intuition" in such situations - which _tends_ to be good, but can also fail us horribly...
It's not an "era" thing. Except as far as most "people" actually just being a bunch of dumb beasts anyway. Adapt, or perish. If his parents can't adapt...they deserve what awaits them. The end. There is no era in which that has not been true, nor will there ever be an era where it is not true.
