- Mabon is recognised by Pagans across the world today as one of the spokes of the Wheel of the Year. But did you know the name Mabon comes from Welsh mythology? And that he is in actuality a Welsh God?
In this episode I am joined by Kris Hughes. Together we discuss the myth and lore pertaining to Mabon, Mabon's connection to Maponos, and how he relates to the festival of the Autumn Equinox.

As an American polytheist, Mabon isn't hard to say properly. I apologise people give you a hard time about your own language. You'd think that as a native speaker, you'd know better than they do. But the internet hates being wrong.
Mhara I must thank you for this. Im a Canadian with Scots-Irish ancestry and am i terested in Celtic paganism. Now I know the real meaning behind (and pronounciation) of Mabon, I think I will find another name. Will also be telling everyone what you shared!

I love how you teach us how to pronounce the Welsh my ancestors came from the borders of Wales, some of my family have sir names after places in and around Wales therefore it is great I learn the myths and facts about my lineage.
Especially now when my witchcraft path has had a big pull towards my ancestral past
Thank you! I'm Welsh living in Canada. I'm English speaking and I'm learning welsh online ( I grew up in East Wales on the border, so most people there are first language English). I can't tell you how hard it can be to access Welsh culture if you are not first language Welsh or a Welsh scholar. Thank you for making it more accessible for all Welsh people. I'm watching lots if your videos and getting alot of your explanations of Mabinogi stories. I would like to add a thought of my own about Mabon. I thought the Salmon returning up stream as an important element. Returning to the source. Maybe mabon is a life force or beginning? The Salmon run would have been culturally very important to people back then. Granted this only became apparent to me after living in Canada where indigenous Coastal People still honor the importance of the Salmon run. This would be around September in Wales when the leaves change colour. I could be wrong about that though. I'd need to check

I loved this conversation. It's interesting too because I grew up in the Pacific Northwest around many pagans and I never heard the term Mabon, only Harvest Season or Fall Equinox. It's a little weird to me that the term has become so popular.

Thank you for sharing I found this really interesting and informative. I feel if you're going to use someone's name it's just plain rude to mis pronounce it knowingly. I am dyslexic and automatically read it the way you say it. I really liked how you gave information and inspiration on connection .
I've lived in the U.S., mostly Minnesota, since birth, except for 3 years in St Andrews and Edinburgh. (I'm white.)
I've had the feeling you mention of not being allowed to or welcome to become close to the spirits of the land here.
I'm an elder now. The way I've come to is to respect and love the land and spirits/dieties here, and recognize the centuries of murder the white people brought here.
To me, that means I can't just muscle in and CLAIM a place among them.
But I feel they welcome me as someone who loves the same land, recognizing my love is not and cannot be the same as theirs.
But I do love it. It's my home.

Mhara, a gentle observation. You did keep talking too long about people refusing to pronounce Mabon correctly. In my experience - I've done it myself - that means you're angry about it. Understandable. But in my opinion not appropriate for a teaching presentation.
Welsh people are allowed to talk about how their language is mispronounced. It’s a very present thing in discussions of the topic, and appropriate to mention.
You yourself sound mad about being corrected.
@@clementinetea2078 You're projecting your anger onto me. I didn’t feel corrected because I don't mind being told once the correct pronunciation of anything by anybody. Like most people who come to these sites, I want to learn.
