It's June 2022 and the world is crazy. I'm an elder, and there's context. I don't think there's a more perfect work of art for this time. I try and imagine what Marc went through to write such a moving piece.... I've had this on "repeat" for half a day, and its poignancy is heart-wrenching. Richie sings for all of humanity, and it's beautiful. Beautiful, but heart-wrenching.
Great song, thoughtful lyrics. And what a truly moving, poignant performance by Richie Havens. What a voice, with Richie displaying such a combination of heart and gravitas. Brilliant all around. Thank you so much for posting. Love it.
one of Glastonbury's best ever performances, i have the full concert on Video & a few yrs ago had it transferred to DVD. get a few beers, turn out the lights & watch the whole concert..
June, 2022, and Richie makes my heart cry for my city (LA), my state (Cali), my country... the world. "Where is the kindness and intelligence that will save us?" -Luis Buñuel
Where did you see him? For me it was Scotland. Was honoured to sit beside him. Truly cry when thinking what a great man we lost but what he gave was magic, that’s gotta be hard going. Beautiful soul. 🌿
Marvellous! Beautiful song, beautifully delivered. I remember being so struck by it when this concert was first broadcast on TV (in the late 70s I think).
Thanks for sharing this, Marc. I love this song and saw him perform it that year at Glastonbury. It fitted the mood of the whole event perfectly; a very special weekend. Sadly Richie never recorded it himself so this snippet is invaluable.
Thank you so much for posting this. I remember watching it a few years ago and thinking what a wonderful song it was and a fabulous performance by Richie. Something really special happened at Glastonbury that year.
Gran artista Richie Havens. Grande entre los grandes. Poco comprendido. Espero que el tiempo y las redes sociales lo coloquen en el top de los grandes músicos. QEPD R.H. Muchas Gracias por compartir. Todos a compartir este video.
Wonderful, I am reunited with a classic. Like some others here. I had a VHS recording of this from over 20 years ago, which i lost, and it was my only reference point,. I have been carrying this beautiful tune around in my head all that time , and searching for it . So now i can try and play it. I didn't know you wrote this Marc. Was it penned in the open tuning? I have written a bunch of songs, which has given me satisfaction,. but this tune , is the one tune I would have most like to have written. Its perfect, in message and sentiment. The best anti war song. Thank you.
Thank you much, Phil. Penned in traditional tuning, key of G. I've recently recorded it for my my next project. Here's a vid of a long ago live performance with all the verses: ua-cam.com/video/V3C4u2vOslk/v-deo.html
Hi, If you figure out the chord progression for this I would love to hear from you. I can usually recognise most of Richie's chord positions but there aren't many close-ups on this footage and the angles are difficult. One thing that stands out to me is that there appears to be a capo at fret 2 and I have never seen Richie use one before.
Does anyone know if he ever recorded this in a studio? As far as I know(and I don't know much), this is the only recorded performance of him doing this song.
Richie at his very best. It's a technical point but it seems he played this with a capo at fret 2 and this is the only time I have seen him use one. Can anyone confirm?
This good man, ❤
he was a giver !
How timely, " How could we let it come to this" miss the man deeply, true prophet for our times

Something hypnotic about Richie Haven's guitar strumming!! I saw him live a couple of times , completely enthralled!!

If u r able to download youtube video there are programs out there that will convert the MP4 to an audio-only MP3
I still hope that 🙏 I'll meet you in Heaven and share some songs 🎵 🙏
Sweet thought, Paula. Thanks.
