  • Shorter vid and review of some Gerber light duty keychain sized MTs. The Splice is a bit rough hewn and its tools are hard to open. I do like the blade and its wide tool selection. Smooth it out and make it higher quality and you have the Gerber Dime, which compares very favorably agains the reference standard of the Leatherman PS4. For the money spent, it's totally worth it.///////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale for Dime: 9 out of 10; Splice: 6 out of 10

    I carry a dime every day, love it. After 6 months, I just discovered the tweezers yesterday! The only downside is the blade is dull out of the box.

    Got the gerber dime, One screw snapped off really easily, so i had to super glue it back. Very low grade. I would never buy gerber again. I will try leatherman next time. (HONEST REVIEW)

    Just picked up my Dime today. I think it's the perfect size for keychain carry and I'll never be without it. Everything I've bought because of your recommendations I haven't been disappointed with.
    Cheers.

    The Dime is the most valuable multi-tool I own, and I have A LOT. The most used item is the package opener, which I use to open all the Amazon boxes with other multi-tool I end up not using :). I gave one as a gift to a mailman, and he is in love with it too. It's by far the most bang for the buck on your keychain, without being too bulky. Trust me, I've tried dozens of keychain tools. I lost mine for a day, ran out bought another, then found the original. YEAH! Now I have one for my EDC.

    The dime looks good at first but the durability is lacking.After a very short time the pliers lose their alignment and the knife blade becomes loose.

    Went to Amazon and bought one this morning after seeing this review. Just received it (kickass Amazon same day delivery for free) and it's very cool. They must have seen your vid or you got a tight one. This one is tight enough but not a nail buster. Thanks for the heads up!

    Why do they need a dedicated bottle opener. Two words Mexican Coke.

  • @shotbytim9624
    @shotbytim9624 8 років тому +1

    Tip: If you have trouble opening the package ripper blade, take a Dremel and enlarge the divot in the handle around the nail nick. The handle scale on that side is a lot thicker than the other and needs a bigger divot for your nail to reach the nick. Made a world of difference for me when I did it.

    I bought the Gerber Dime and the problem is that too heavy to put on the keychain with 2.2 oz. If you want something to put on the keychain try the Victorinox Classic SD which I also have and is not too heavy on the keychain and has way better blade and scissors than the Dime and weights 0.74 oz.

    I LOVE the bottle opener on my skeletool CX that I've been wearing since it was first released 3-4 years ago. I don't drink beer anymore, but I drink a lot of cokes in the bottles, and root beer and sarsaparilla, and I use the opener a lot. I'd be sad if manufacturers didn't put them on the tool, as long as it is not in the way or adds weight/size. Keep the cap lifters coming guys! Thanks for the videos nutn! I'm always waiting for the next one.

    First let me say thank you for all your vids. They have influenced how I view the items I use or buy. I actually bought this mini multi based partially on this vid. I try not to ever take one persons stance or opinion on any issue. We do live in a democracy for a reason. Second, just a quick FYI. I actually found a small pair of tweezers on my little Gerber Dime after using it for a few weeks. Also, the small file actually saved my bacon. My spare key that I was trying to use to get into my apartment, after leaving my keys with my girlfriend, was not going in all the way due to a poor cut. Using the file I ground down the pestering area and got it to work enough to gain access. Thanks for all your hard work.

    I carry the one of the red Gerber dimes on my keys daily and it's awesome for light duty. I just had a crazy idea but could anyone imagine if Spyderco or Cold Steel made some multi tools? And if they did they'd have to be in small, medium and large sizes. I think that would be awesome.

    I've had 2 of these. The first one got stolen cause my friend liked it so much. I have a black one now. I dont know if I dropped it or used the pliers to hard but the body comes together and the pliers wont close all the way now. I use the thing a lot though. Its great for opening those damn heat sealed packages. I'm getting another one just because I use it so much. Its the right tool set in a tiny package. None of these micro tools will stand the test of time, dont fool yourself. They cant make superior quality in this small a package. I got mine for 17 dollars on amazon. I have a SOG powerassist for real work. My advise, dont use the pliers unless you have to and dont put any real pressure on them. Its a real handy tool for a keychain.

    We use cap lifters because the pop tops (as opposed to screw tops) seal the beer better, thus the beer lasts longer.

    Thanks for accepting my video response! I just bought the Dime today, tweezers are better! Bottle opener works great! I even cut through the packaging afterwards with the package opener (you know I had to). Fit and finish isn't the best, can't compare to Leatherman, but functionality is excellent... except for the nail file, what the hell is that? It'd be fine if I had tiny elf fingers, and the front side of the file is decoration at best, doesn't grind anything. Keep up the good work, Nutn.

    Thanks for the review. The multi-tool, whichever one prefers, is in my opinion the 3rd most important edc item that one should have on their person. Nutn, if you carried your light/ultralight MT on you for a year and never used it would you still carry it? Personally I just don't find that I use anything smaller than a medium sized multi-tool. I keep medium or heavy duty MT's in my school backpack, vehicle, tackle box, hunting bag and frame pack. Used to carry my Gerber Vise on my keychain but found that I never using it.

    I really like to clean my fingers with my pointed knives and or my EDC keychain multi-tool. At first I believed this was the only shortfall of the Gerber Dime. I have since discovered that if the user unfolds one handle of the tool while utilizing the file/Phillips head it is perfect for cleaning fingernails. It extends the tool just enough to get a great grip and angle the file for perfect nail cleaning.

  • @justgonnastay
    @justgonnastay 12 років тому

    The cap lifter is especially extraneous when you know how to use just about any rigid object to open a bottle with your finger as the fulcrum. Heck, the multitool itself becomes the opener. Now a corkscrew, that's a vital feature.

    Pretty much all of the smaller higher quality breweries use regular caps. Twist offs are only really used by the large beer corporations like Annheiser busch. I have the gerber crucial and i have been using it for about 3 months at work now and it has really worked out well for me. The only thing that i did not like about the dime is that i did not see a pocket clip on it. I'm a Leatherman fan but I found a Gerber Vise at REI for 15 bucks and I carry it all the time... the tools are hard to get out, which is frustrating in a jam, but it's held up really well over time. My Vise is over a year old so I can't speak to whether or not they've changed the action of the tools, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Overall its really handy. It's not the most ergonomic tool (like you said, it's squared on the edges) but it gets the job done well.

    I bought the Dime based on mostly positive reviews on youtube. It is a cool little mt. Looks awesome (Mine is the grey/red option). Unfortunately it is not flawless and I believe people should know that so they are not disappointed with all the hype and high expectation.
    1. You mentioned light duty. I think you didn't stress that enough. The Dime is not very rigid and you can't use it as a regular heavy duty pliers or a big screwdriver. The frame bends under stress when unscrewing tight screws or squeezing the pliers hard.
    2. The inside corners of the frame at the pliers end should have been rounded like on the PS4 for easier opening. Because they are not, the tool fights its design every time I open the pliers and now the side scales are misaligned a little and the aluminum corner is squished slightly. With use it will worsen.
    3. They should have made a short box cutter in the place of the 2D Phillips and put a full size file with a 2D Phillips in its place. With the current design the file is useless and the bottle opener is in the way of the short screwdriver. I believe the box cutter would have worked just as fine.
    4. I would have preferred a pen style blade. It also has a little sideways play.
    5. My scissors are not ideal. Because the blades are bent towards each other to provide friction, that puts a lot of stress on the middle joint. As a result they don't bite very well in the core, where they should be strongest. I have to press them to the right and not directly down to make them bite all the way.
    6. Scale finish is not very durable, but I like that - it gets the "used" look quickly.
    7. It is heavy. For a comparison, it is heavier than a full sized 91mm Victorinox Spartan. If you have many keys and tools on your keychain, you will not feel it. But if you are like me and have only 2 keys and one RFID chip, the Dime weights more than everything combined. As a result I had to go for a Victorinox Classic Alox that weights 1/4 of a Dime and has the most important things for me and source the lightest bottle opener possible. I will keep the Dime for extended EDC with flashlight and stuff, but not on my keychain. After all, it is a great little gadget.

      I know what you mean but mine has been missing for 2 months and I feel like I have to replace it. Heavy duty, no but for my POU, it's only for when I don't want or need to walk to the truck and get something more robust. I bought a crucial and hung it on my pocket next to my knife but man.... The weight. I think that's about to live in my sunvisor.

    On the dime, next to the bottle opener, there's a little tab that during the review you failed to mention and it was buggin' me to know what it is. Based on Gerber's product description, it would appear that that would be the tweezers.

  • @sarinhighwind

    I really don't like the fact the lanyard ring is right next to the blades on the splice. For a tiny multi tool, I can see a few uses, but it would be hard for me to justify those unless I needed a dedicated pair of scissors with extra capabilities. The Dime seemed to have gotten the lanyard right. Actually, the Dime is impressing me fairly well.

    The one thing I took way from this video is that a lot of bottle beers in America are twist off? Eurgh, its usually only the cheapest of the cheap that are twist off in the UK. There's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned bottle cap.

    Your reviews are excellent this one is no exception, but there are many many wonderful beers that are not twist off. That being said, there are many other standard tools on that MT that could be used to open a beer and a dedicated bottle cap opener is not necessary.

    I got a solstice in a "gift set" with a paraframe.
    It was promptly placed in my "catch all" box and has NEVER come out and never been used.

    I am assuming you don't drink much beer. I have found the dedicated cap lifter to be the best part of this little MT (and no, most good beers do not have twist-off caps). I am not sure it is quite the build quality of the PS4, but the design is a home run, and it is a great value. One little hit: if you use a lanyard or put it on a keychain the file becomes unusable due to position; particularly the crosscut side.

    I carry my PS4 in my little coin pocket in my jeans, used it more then I thought I would. Granted it's the only MT I carry and is very small and ultra light duty, I've still put it to some use. I at least put a Gerber suspension in my pizza delivery car, and then a Leatherman Sidekick in my SUV I use outside of work.

    I laughed when he commented on the cap lifter and said "they must have some serious brew parties over there." Being born and raised here in portland, oregon not far from gerber's headquarters, it's so true! LOL. The culture here in potrtland is really into craft beers and micro brews. Were so used to it we don't even think about it. I'm sure at gerber they're like," Of course it needs a bottle cap opener!, Poppin the cap off a micro brew is something that will occur often! Duh." LOL.

    Have to say I'm one of the rare exceptions then. Gerber Multi Plier 800 with Victorinox Bitholder/Crank on me EVERY DAY. At least if the day involves wearing pants, which is usually the case. Before the Gerber, I had the Victorinox Swisstool CS Plus on me in the same way, which has too stiff springs on it for my taste. I repair stuff often at Uni, and it's just so convenient to always have some pliers, screwdrivers and a few TORX bits with me.

    I normally agree with your reviews. This one is WAY off my friend. The Gerber Dime, I've found to be the biggest piece of junk Gerber has put out. The first day, loosening a cable fitting from the back of a cable modem caused the handle to collapse upon itself and the retention bar to bend outward causing it to lose function all together. The tool also pinched my hand when closing it causing a small cut because the only way to get it off my skin was by opening it which made it dig in even more. Then there are the scissors. They don't work unless you compress the handle all the way into the side of the tool. Mine got stuck and the scissors wouldn't close all the way down . I bought this at walmart after watching your review. I'd like my $14 back but they won't give it to me because the black coating was chipped from OPENING IT!! Got $14 to send me Nutn?

    About the bottle opener...yes regular beer bottles ("Bud") are twist off. BUT...craft beer ("Sierra Nevada") has pry off tops. Thus the need for the opener! (That's my guess anyway.)

    I am big on my Leathermans and Victorionox, but as far as micro tools go, this is by far the best one i have ever owned, and i have owned 3 myself, and bought 2 as gifts. I once brought one to a backyard barbecue to pop open some coronas, and i wound up taking apart a friends pressure washer and troubleshooting his problems with it. It is such a well rounded tool for its size! The only thing i hate about this tool is if you buy the all black model, there is always at-least 1 tool that is just super hard to open. However if you buy the red or green model i find that that problem doesn't exist.r Hate Gerber all you want, but this is one sexy micro-tool!

      @aljier -
      I'm sorry you had a poor experience with the tool, but remember, all mechanical devices (especially mass-productions) are capable of failure. I hope you find a tool you can trust.

      +hat wobbla Wish I would have read this like 5 days ago. I have & love the green one for months and i just bought the black one for a friend as a X-mas present. Wonder why the color difference would make a tool hard to open?
