This was the station you listened to. I remember when they used to say "W-H-BEATLES!" at the height of Beatle mania. Great station. Played all the hits.
I grew up with this station. I loved it! I still have my list of the top hits of 1970. After they played them on New Year's, you could send them a postage paid envelope and they would mail you a copy of the list. I was just telling my husband today about my list which raised my curiosity about this station again. So I googled it. I remember all their antics, Chicken Man, the Time Bomb game, Uncle Phils Filthy Files, etc. Memories!!
Love this... does anyone else on here remember also when you would call in to the station and play "Timebomb"? You would then hear a recording that would go something like.. $2.00 tick tick tick, $5.00, then the caller would say, STOP. And then whatever was next on the recording is the amount you won or you could hear the bomb blowing up and you got nothing. Imagine a contest today where I think the top prize you could win on it and it was rare to win that was only $10.00? Those were the days!
Johnny Dolan was the greatest!! Does anybody know if he's still alive and where I might write to thank him for being an important part of the soundtrack of my youth?
It was O'Shea. Dan was my Uncle. I loved him dearly. In fact, he was my inspiration behind my career in radio. He passed away in the spring of '06 and I retired from the airwaves in June of the same year.
heck yeah.. it was the only station until they came up with FM.. we used to write down the 100 count down they played on new years.. i still have one of the lists from the 70's..Yours Truly, peggy k..:~)
This was the ONLY radio station back in the early 70s that any of us kids listened to. Hearing the names of all the DJs again was great. Wish there was more posts from their actual air time.
I used to listen to WHB circa 1960, down in the basement on my transistor radio. My 71st birthday today, and I recall their motto - "71 - that's easy to remember!". Well, 58 years later - I remember!
WHB's "timebomb" was nothing but a shameless ripp off of KUDL's Beat The Bomb. That was KUDL's first major contest the first summer they were Top 40 back in June of 1967. By September of that same year WHB was doing their "Timebomb" version. Talk about a tacky and shameless ripp off. Also KUDL played better songs than WHB. Okaaaaaaaaaay I'm done slamming 'HB. One thing when KBEQ came to town WHB did start to sound a lot tighter and more "hipper" than it usually did but it was too late.
Do any of you oldtimers - late night oldtimers, remembr "St. Joe Joe" on the Jeff Roberts show? I am St. Joe Joe. "Mornin Mister Roberts, I just fed muh pet hog Brucie" I also did some of the (belch & fart variety) more disgusting sound effects. Jeff went through a phase when he said "WHB is stronger than hogs" and then cut to my pig squeal. ALMOST 40 years ago.
@smcglasson0220 Thanks for that info. I never knew they gave away items other than money... and a jar of peanut butter? Unbelievable. Sorry you weren't able to get to pick it up as you would have been showing everyone your prize I'm sure.
KUDL was on, 1380 AM, peggy--I won a birthday prize of a recording of them announcing my birthday on the air plus the song they chose, Blue WInter, by Connie Francis and a case of Pepsi-Cola 6oz bottles. They were always rivals for listeners with WHB
Way to go thank you, thank you. I grew up with this station and it was a joy. One part of our country that is dead and gone and replace by empty nothing now. Add more ifyou find it.
Grew up in KC always listened to WHB top forty count down on AM radio. I live in Florida and they play Casey kesem top forty count down on sunday evening! love it, Reminds me of my Ute!
Does anyone have the 9-note news sounder WHB used in the '60s? It was a dramatic, brassy version of the old lounge song "What's New." I believed KAAY in Little Rock used a version of it as well.
Thanks. I never knew that as I didn't even know about KUDL till the late 70's. I'm guessing that KUDL was an FM station, even way back then. I didn't even have an FM radio. Ha.
Another great DJ was Steve Lundy! Uses to listen to him at night. Can't remember the entire quote, but part of his sign off was "...Rock on world". His closing song was " In The Nighttime". Loved that man! He moved to Chicago in the late '60's I believe. Last time I heard him was about 1991 in Houston, Texas, on 98FM, KFMK.

Yes! I still have the "40 Star Surveys" from 1963

I listened to WHB on a transistor radio on a farm in central MO during the day...

Remember Chicken Man?
Johnny Dolan was also onKFMK in Houston back in the late '80's - early '90's.
I built a crystal radio set from radio shack in the 60s 710 was the only station it would receive. Which was fine buy me!
still have some of this surveys
I could hear WHB way up by Waterloo, Iowa. Jim Moore on middays and Phil jay were my favorites, although they were all good.

Does anyone from back then remember the "Eye-Full Tower"?
Remember going to Montgomery (Monkey) Wards on Saturday mornings. "Rollin' with Dolan!"
WHB Dial 71

Johnny Dolan and Phil Jay were the only ones we listened to in high school. Does anyone know what happened to them ?
