Back when AM radio was at the top and rock 'n roll was young, WHB was the top 40 station to listen to. It could be heard from Mexico to Canada. DJ's like Johnny Dolan, Phil Jay, Ron Martin, Dan O'Shey, Dan Donovan, and Chickenman who's everywhere, he's everywhere. Such were the days of the 60's and 70's.
LOL, I liked the static -- that's how it was. WHB came in pretty clear, it was one of the stations we could listen to all the way down to the Lake of the Ozarks. 610 and 810 were the other channels.
You mean to tell me they were still using WORD prefixes for telephone numbers in 1973 in Kansas City? KC is Southwestern Bell. I lived in Dallas in 1972 and '73, where Southwestern Bell is the phone company there, as well, and they'd gone to three NUMBER prefixes rather than WORD prefixes. I lived in KC through 1970, and I would have sworn we switched to three number prefixes before I left. So why is WHB still calling their phone number GRAND 1-7100 three years later in 1973? Weird. Did nobody bother to re-record and update the Champion/Challenger intros?
I'm looking for the news sounder WHB used in the mid- to late '60s. It was a very dramatic, brassy 9-note version of the old lounge song "What's New?" Any clues would be appreciated.
Thank you for posting this! OMG, this is great! Lived in KC, MO late 60's to mid 70's. I'm loving this!
Used to work on my uncles farm in southern Missouri during early 70s. Always listened to WHB. "WHB dial 71, strikes gold."
