    Fantastic to watch them play! And it's cool to see Agassi smile in the first game, as he realized immediately that he was on a different level than his opponent. Also very interesting to see Andre experiment with heavy spin groundstrokes that weren't exactly part of his repertoire when he was on tour. A champion, and a master of this sport!

      Did you read his book? He was not my favorite when I was a teen, but after reading his book, I've come to respect him much more as he dragged himself out of the gutter and had to deal with others marketing an image that wasn't him. Also, he is probably nicer a person than Pistol Pete. I hope that he has many more blessings in life.

    Much discussion below about the Prince racquet Agassi is using - Yes, it is the Tour version, and yes, it's a 107, but so were earlier versions that were described as "110", because in those days racquets were measured around the outside of the frame, today around the inside. I still play with them today - I have a like-new 1983 1-stripe (the heaviest) that says Oversize 110 on the shaft and it is exactly the same size as my Tour and my other 4-stripe versions I hit with. And yes, I'm old, playing in So. Florida for 40+ years...

    Thomas Muster one of the best and toughest players ever. If it wasn't for his accident, the world would know how great he was. I saw both play in Boston when they were around Muster beat Agassi straight sets and went on to win the tournament I think that was in 1988.

      Muster was one of my favourite players back then.. Modelled both my forehead & backhand on his.. Tennis magazine once wrote an article (I think he was on the cover page) stating with photos how he sat in a chair while recuperating from the knee damage from the accident, hitting balls on court. Loved his no-nonsense demeanor, so heavy groundstrokes & never say die attitude.

    Where are you gear nerds??? I'm just a year younger than Andre and grew up watching him. I also used the Prince Graphite as a junior in the 80's. And what's funny, is that even though he switched to Head soon after, in this 2015 video he's using a POG. To me, it's inspiring because I just bought a Prince Graphite 107 (Tennis Warehouse reissue) here in April of 2022 and I LOVE it. I had been using the Head Prestige 2019 MP but after playing with this, just WOW. Yes, you have to have actual tennis strokes to use this racket. The other thing I wish I could speak more about, lack of time, is that Andre seemed to hate Muster in the 90's. They had a big rivalry. But IIRC, IMO, this was due to Brad Gilbert being a frat boy douche bag back then, and though technically and strategically he helped Andre greatly, it took Gil Reyes to undo Brad's bro/frat douche influence. I remember watching Andre change for the worse (I mean as a person) after hooking up with Gilbert. But thank God Andre leans back into Reyes. Andre never gets Steffi if he only has Brad frat boy in his life and not Gil. Anyway, so nice to see these two being friendly, unlike that US Open match.

    Wow, that match was just surreal. In the past, Muster was usually the fitter of the two. And now, it's just the other way around...although Agassi was getting a bit winded too. :) it's also nice to see that they're on friendly terms now. It definitely was not always like that.

      Paul Higdon Fitness wasn't an issue for Andre. Matches they played not inlcuding the one Davis Cup match, Agassi won the head to head 5-3 including beating him twice at the U.S. Open.

      Paul Higdon I'm not sure. I think Muster's fitness was a bit overrated, i.e. he frequently got winded in matches, however, I think he had more desire than most other players. Aggasi on the other hand seldom got tired in matches, then again, that's primarily because he was the one dictating points.

    • @starshower776
      @starshower776 8 років тому +3

      I have to take issue with some of that. Muster was a fitness freak. The guy was hitting tennis balls in a wheelchair, when he had his nasty lower body injury. But they also played very different styles. On clay, Muster would definitely have an edge over Agassi. Back in the day. But Agassi was always a very hard matchup for Muster, because of how early Agassi could take the ball. And his return of Muster's second serve. And then again, later in his career, Agassi took his fitness to another level. And with Muster, he definitely hit a wall later in his career. Either way, its a nice contrast.

      +Paul Higdon Muster's fitness was not overrated. Fellow players in the '90s frequently referred to him as the fittest on the tour. At his peak, players feared him immensely. For all of his strengths, Muster had some exposable weaknesses. An in form Agassi, especially on a hard court, was a really tough matchup for the reasons Paul noted. Additionally, Muster often had problems against serve and volley/attacking players who rushed him and didn't give him baseline rhythm.
      I always felt like Muster's steady fade from mid-1997 through mid-1999 when he disappeared from the tour was due to a combination of things. After hearing all of the complaints throughout 1996 about how he was an undeserving #1 because most of his wins had come on clay, Muster set out to silence the critics at the start of 1997. Using a new extra long racquet intended to boost his game on faster surfaces, Muster began the season playing noticeably more aggressively. He was standing closer to the baseline and taking the ball a bit more on the rise with a flatter trajectory. Through March, Muster, playing exclusively on hard courts, had reached the semis of the Australian Open (beat Courier and Ivanisevic, lost to Sampras), won Dubai (beat Courier and Ivanisevic again), reached the semis of Indian Wells, and won Miami. He was back to #2 in the world and closing on Sampras. Any sort of typically solid clay court season would've likely returned Muster to #1, but he oddly struggled mightily at the tournaments he had dominated over the previous two years. The racquet change which had helped him on faster surfaces was blamed as a detriment on clay. Muster said he wasn't able to spin the ball and create angles as readily. While that may have been a factor, I think that he was simply not used to coming into the clay season having already played so many matches. In a way, he may have mentally lost a bit of his edge after having already succeeded in slamming his critics by outplaying just about everyone on hard courts over the course of the biggest tournaments of the season to date. In August, he reached another Masters 1000 hard court final (known as Mercedes Super 9 back then) in Cincinnati, losing to Sampras. That run ended several months of subpar results, but it was clear that Muster wasn't quite the same.
      He put together a few impressive performances in 1998, and had a decent clay season, but it seemed like players were onto him by then. The ATP Tour was shifting at the end of the '90s with some younger, more dynamic players emerging. Guys like Kuerten, Rios, Hewitt, Safin, Haas, etc. I don't think it's a coincidence that Chang and Courier began to fade around the same time that Muster did. It became more and more difficult for Muster to outgrind guys from the baseline. His serve, which had always been mediocre at best, became more of a liability as the game became more and more powerful. Having won the French Open, reached #1 in the world, won a bunch of clay court titles, won at the site that his career nearly ended because of a freak accident (Miami), all the while proving the critics wrong, I think Muster achieved what he hoped to achieve.

      +tkramer62283 Leading up to the 97 FO Muster was losing all of his clay court matches very badly, with scores like 2 and 3 or worse if memory serves correctly. But also, he didn't seemed to be bothered by those results. I just think, after the huge effort he put forth into winning all of the pre FO events in 96, only to lose at the FO (the ultimate goal) that there was no way he was going to put himself through that grind again - especially not after all the tennis he had already played in 97, i.e. getting to the final weekend of 5 events in just a couple of months. Too bad for him he ran into a very hot GK at FO, who actually beat 3 champions in route to the title, i.e. Muster, Kafelnikov, and Brugera (that might be a record).

    Absolut Hammer wie Agassi da loslegt. Muster kaspert da ja zu 80 % nur rum, sonst hätte er vieleicht mehr schaffen können. Andre ist undbleibt halt der geilste und sympatischste Typ der je nen Tennsicourt betreten hat. Hätte der Muater da nicht ständig rumgekapsert wäre der gar nicht aufgefallen, wärend Andre in seinen Neonklamotten die ganze Zeit leuchtet wie ne Fackel.. *grins* Das Andre noch über 200 kmh Aufschläge da hinlegt ist schon wahnsinn, immer wieder geil ihm zuzusehen.. :-)

      _"Muster kaspert da ja zu 80 % nur rum, sonst hätte er vieleicht mehr schaffen können."_ -- Ich denke eher, Muster hat rumgekaspert hat, weil er früh gemerkt hat, dass er gegen Agassi keinen Stich sieht. Die Spiele, die er "gemacht" hat waren vermutlich auch nur Geschenke von Agassi.

    Muster should use flat strokes at least when there's an opportunity. He's definitely lacking a weapon to just hit the ball hard and with less spin when there is a opportunity to play a winner. Earlier he had the strength and fitness to support his heavy but slow topspin game - but now he's older and he should think about a more efficient play style (at least introduce some flat strokes).
