I am a Joburger but based in the USA and when i have brought my friends to SA, they cannot stop raving about Cape Town in spite of them having visited Johannesburg and Durban.

My point is that the western world thinks Africa as a whole is not developed or educated or advanced and it comes with a superiority complex, where they think they’re better than us. And to be more blunt, it’s even worse with Black western folks. Yes, poverty exists! There is an immense imbalance in the social class, globally and South Africa is a great example of it. My point however, is that we’re not that stereotype of “Africans” riding on lions and elephants and living in dirt because we are incapable of advancing with the rest of world. I have been living in Johannesburg all my live and I am afraid to walk the streets of the inner city because of the crime. I am glad you enjoyed it and other parts of Joburg as well.

Am from Zambia, Africa. I got shocked, one day the western media showed a video of my country. They showed huts, a desert , camels, donkeys and I was like we don't have any of that! Huts in RURAL areas, yes but not Camels! A desert! Never seen a desert in my life! Our capital city, Lusaka is pretty much like as modern as Johansburg as well. I live in an apartment not a hut. It's true the media always goes for the worst looking places in our country to show the world. Shame.

Our vibe is different and the pace is slower, so I was shook, indeed when I did find like minded people they were so welcoming and kind. But the average lay person is in a deep rat race it is Africa's financial capital after all.
To get the real feel of the African soil. Do not only visit the cities. Explore more, go to townships and the deep rural areas and get a fair balanced feel. Not all south african areas are the same.

There's actually South African cuisine everywhere that you guys went, I think you needed to know South Africans who would take you to those places, you guys went to Maboneng (not Manobang) Phatha Phatha a restaurant in Maboneng serves South African cuisine so maybe next time you guys come back try to go there and I feel like you haven't experienced proper SA until you go to a township to see the other side of the country. Next time also try to experience Pretoria, and maybe go to a Safari in Limpopo, if not just take a Safari in Joburg there are plenty of places to take a safari in Joburg.

Johannesburg is full of people from all over Africa .. so you won't experience real south africa but mixture of African people who are trying to fit in by being rude .. if you need to experience real south africa you need to go to other provinces like KZN and LIMPOPO the culture is rooted there..
Just a note regarding South African food, it is so ubiquitous and diverse that if you are Zulu or Sotho you know where your traditional food is. It would be great ofcourse for more mainstream eateries to have it even gourmet style.
Also we are a new nation. Our new nation also has a new diet. There is fusion, but it's dense calorie heavy. Pap, veges, meat, greens and veges. But I am describing it from my tribes preferences. Someone from North West will differ. But we make it so Soweto is your best bet for an authentic vibe.

Am from Zambia, Africa. I got shocked, one day the western media showed a video of my country. They showed huts, a desert , camels, donkeys and I was like we don't have any of that! Huts in RURAL areas, yes but not Camels! A desert! Never seen a desert in my life! Our capital city, Lusaka is pretty much like as modern as Johansburg as well. I live in an apartment not a hut. It's true the media always goes for the worst looking places in our country to show the world. Shame.
I knoww!! It is such a shame. That's why we are so focussed on getting the real real rather than believing what they say and never going to see it for ourselves.

It would be better if you guys can move to another place around Johannesburg other than the CBD. My advice to you guys , you also need to make South African friends ... @@KingandTyla Yeah no doubt, I first went there in 2004 being from KZN. Our vibe is different and the pace is slower, so I was shook, indeed when I did find like minded people they were so welcoming and kind. But the average lay person is in a deep rat race it is Africa's financial capital after all.
Small street isn’t a place to go. Know hotspots where you should not go to avoid horrible things.

There's actually South African cuisine everywhere that you guys went, I think you needed to know South Africans who would take you to those places, you guys went to Maboneng (not Manobang) Phatha Phatha a restaurant in Maboneng serves South African cuisine so maybe next time you guys come back try to go there and I feel like you haven't experienced proper SA until you go to a township to see the other side of the country. Next time also try to experience Pretoria, and maybe go to a Safari in Limpopo, if not just take a Safari in Joburg there are plenty of places to take a safari in Joburg.

We didn't have a driver on this trip, but UBER, BOLT etc is all that you need really, very assessable & inexpensive. Johannesburg is full of people from all over Africa .. so you won't experience real south africa but mixture of African people who are trying to fit in by being rude .. if you need to experience real south africa you need to go to other provinces like KZN and LIMPOPO the culture is rooted there..

You went to the CBD even we South Africans dont go there anymore unless you are connecting to another part of town.
Just a note regarding South African food, it is so ubiquitous and diverse that if you are Zulu or Sotho you know where your traditional food is. It would be great ofcourse for more mainstream eateries to have it even gourmet style.

Also we are a new nation. Our new nation also has a new diet. There is fusion, but it's dense calorie heavy. Pap, veges, meat, greens and veges. But I am describing it from my tribes preferences. Someone from North West will differ. But we make it so Soweto is your best bet for an authentic vibe.
In Joburg central you don't smile with anyone and you don't ask for directions, most people keep to themselves for fear of being mugged or scammed.
