It seems you would do well to try and keep the balloon as intact as possible, just poke one pinhole to let the air out on the opposite end as the knot. I loved this!
I made a hanging light back in the 70's using this technique and cotton string. I used a plastic jar lid with a hole drilled in the center to pull the end of the balloon thru to maintain an opening large enough to get my hand thru to change the bulb. I also used this technique with 1/8" wide ribbon to make christmas ornaments. I'm so glad you posted this as I had forgotten all about it. I will def make some orbs for my coffee table. Turn out so unique I can’t wait to make them . I’m going make them put on my stand or also sunroom with sea shells in them

Maybe you didn't add enough water .
