Apparently it's from some not very well known sci-fi show in the early 70s. So Star Trek wasn't ripping off Star Wars, they both were ripping off something obscure from even earlier. Same explanation for the comic characters Swamp Thing and Man Thing (came out the same month, both based on obscure character "The Heap" from 15 years earlier). No idea what the deal is with the 2 Dennis The Menace that came out in the US and the UK at the same time.
The Breen were initially an improvised low-budget creation. The production people didn't want to bother designing new aliens, new makeup and prosthetics, etc ... and they only needed one or two for the first Breen episodes ... so they repurposed old props and wardrobes, quickly put together half-assed costume which completely covered the performers. Surprisingly popular with fans so they got a lot more detail (yet carefully didn't get much specific detail) in later appearances. Not be the actual headgear prop worn in Star Wars, but definitely drew influence from it.

The Klingons? The Romulans? Nope, they HAVE to target the Federation! Border conflicts don't count, since there's almost always going to be border tensions and every culture deals with them, but outside threats that come from _Elsewhere_ and that don't share a border with ANY alpha quadrant species (or the [beta quadrant] Romulans) ALWAYS seem to only ever affect the Federation!! In fairness, however, I suppose it's possible that the Klingons, the Romulans, the Cardassians, etc, have all had to deal with things like The Crystalline Entity (or whatever the outside threat in question may be), but they choose not to make that information public and so our friends in the Federation just never hear of it. @@Raz.C It's not always clear, but it seems like the Federation is absolutely huge. It's questionable how canon it is, but in the 'map of the alpha quadrant' you can find online, the Federation contains a lot more planets and controls more territory than the Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians put together. The reason that Starfleet has to worry about war with these other powers is Starfleet is more like an armed NGO than an imperial military and doesn't pursue military dominance. Up until the discovery of the borg, Starfleet didn't even build "warships" - their cruisers were primarily science and humanitarian ships with combat ability as a tertiary consideration. They don't conscript anybody and only maintain enough combat-capable ships to maintain the peace. As a result the Federation is relatively weak despite having dozens of member species and their homeworlds. Even so, it is telling that aside from the Borg and the Dominion, the traditional rival races like the Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians never considered total war against the Federation a viable option, always opting for schemes and conflicts over limited objectives, usually a planet or two. The Borg and Dominion were the only entities that the Federation (that is, from the TNG era onward) as a whole was truly threatened by. So naturally they encounter all the weird threats; they're the ones looking for them. Incidentally I feel sure that the Reapers were at least partly inspired by the Borg and V'ger.
@@dark7element I get what you're saying, which means that I don't think I explained my own position very well. Let me try this: It seems like starfleet is the Earth Space Fleet, rather than the Federation Space Fleet. Sure, you find Vulcans here and there along with Andorians and Tellerites, Betazeds, etc... But they seem like token additions here and there, rather than the millions from those worlds one would expect. Instead, it seems like Earth is the only planet, humans are the only race which has millions of representatives in Star Fleet. There should be millions of people from each of the two hundred odd Federation worlds, all in Star Fleet. If that WERE the case, then none of the stellar neighbours of the Federation would be able to compete militarily with Star Fleet or the Federation. because- everything else aside- a Galaxy Class starship or even an Intrepid class starship (not to mention the Defiant class) is more than a match for any Romulan/ Klingon/ Cardassian warship, even though these Federation vessels aren't warships (Defiant aside, but we didn't mention that anyway)...
Maybe a "nation" of Augments, similar to Khan, that decided to keep to themselves rather than try to go for harebrained schemes or galactic domination? Would make sense. The Federation would likely genocide them all if they ever found out what exactly they are, which is why they avoid them, while they don't have such reservations about the Klingons (whom they dislike for attacking them without provocation), the Ferengi, and the Dominion. I mean, if you lead a group of people that all have unnatural blue hair from birth, and some faction, that doesn't know about you yet, made one of its core tenets that everyone with an "unnatural" hair color violates their laws and needs to die, you'd stay the hell away from them as much as you can, and if you end up in a war with these people, you're gonna make sure that every hit on them hurts (like the Breen's attack on San Francisco) so they know not to approach you.
To be honest I just think they are the opposite of the Tholians who thrive in extreme heat climates, and frankly, it is a lot easier to heat up a place and keep it hot than cool it down which could explain the constant suits.

What if the Breen homeworld is tidally locked to its star? You would have a world with a temperate light side and permanently subzero dark side. That way their world could be both seen as a pleasant environment by aliens, and dominated by a species evolved in the bitter cold of the night side. It might even explain how there could be multiple species of Breen, with each hailing from a different region of their homeworld (not unlike the Xindi I guess).
@Jeff somersby Not necessarily, they could have eyesight like nocturnal animals and in addition sonar or something else. You don't need a lot of light to see, just enough.

Agreed. There is a habit of people wanting to know everything, but I think it takes away so much of the mystery. Not knowing every single detail makes them so much more interesting, they are definitely one of my faves, along with Andorians. Less really is more sometimes
In an episode of DS9, I recall Weyoun describing the Breen home world as being green, lush and warm which made him wonder why they wear refrigeration suits.
It's not "thought", it's THOT; and it stands for "That Ho Over There". It's a sexist slur coined by incels and used by misogynists. There's your Interwebz trivia for the day.
"In order to be true to our nature, and our destiny, we must aspire to greater things. We have outgrown our cradle. It is futile to cry for mother's milk, when our true sustenance awaits us among the stars. " -Breen
Yeah but I think their natural habitat is still on the temperate side, so he would still know what a normal humanoid would find comfortable. They may have no sense of aesthetics, but that's not quite an aesthetic property, it's more of a statistic and they should be great at statistics, I would assume as it would aid in their functions as dominion dignitaries.
In DS9 it is specially stated that the Breen homeworld is of typical human tempratures. Which is then further mentioned as to the mystery of the Breen's refrigeration suits
The strange ship that the NX-01 encounters in "Fight or Flight" may be a Breen ship. Its appearance and behavior are more or less consistent. Also, as at least one other person pointed out, it's implied that the Founders may have replaced a Breen, which suggests... something?
A Founder tricking the Breen into the war makes sense, since the Breen don't seem like the types to involve themselves in other group's wars. Although, they did want Earth for some reason.

6:47 in DS9 Damar and Weyoun talked about the Breen homeworld. Weyoun said it was actual quite comfortable for most living things contrary to reports. unless they evolved from a very tiny region of that planet where its very cold, it just adds even more mystery to them
Weyoun may also have been lying or been misinformed. Also, the Breen encounter suits and technology may have been developed to survive their planet getting ravaged by a radical change in climate... which other species outside of their own consider pleasant. The lack of information makes just about all theories viable.
I for one, always subscribed to the theory that the Breen are the descendants of the Valakians, the aliens that Archer and Phlox refused to cure. It would be so wonderfully karmic.
It could be that the Breen are " Humans" and other species that we already know about that just didn't want to be part of the federation. That would explain why they don't have any dealings with them.
I thought their homeworld was temperate. Weyoun mentions this to Damar after a trip back from there, who then asks what the refrigeration suits were for to which Weyoun cannot answer. Also odd that neither Kira nor Dukat reported on what they look like after they took two Breen suits when rescuing his daughter.
@@scottmantooth8785 apparently there are several Breen species. one requires refrig suits and the soldier Breen are of a race that melts when you kill them.
The point that Kira and Dukat never mentioning what the Breen look like is why some say that the Breen are of a makeup that would literally evaporate when exposed to temperatures that are "normal" for other humanoids (so the specific Breen in question may have evaporated quickly enough once their suits were removed that Kira and Dukat never had the chance to get a good look at them).
Technically, Kira and Bashir only saw Breen suit interiors. It's implied that these suits previously had Breen occupants, but not explicitly stated and not strictly required.
@@pwnmeisterage This, seeing how secretive the Breen are, if they don't just explode/melt like suggested without the suit, i could totally see them having implants that turn their bodies into unrecognizable remains the moment they die or their suit is forcibly removed, making sure nobody ever sees an intact Breen or can use their bodies for say... the creation of bioweapons against them.
@@_Muzolf there is the theory that hey are ammonia-based lifeforms, and those refrigeration suits are so they dont die. there was another that a breen is made up from corpses and dead tissue from other species that were reanimated.

@@Paulafan5 I agree. There is the episode where Kira and Dukat rescue his daughter from the Breen, and they both wear Breen suits they steal from them. Somehow they forgot to check what Breen look like inside the suits LOL. Their bodies must dissolve somehow, maybe natural decay like Changelings or maybe the suit itself uses acid or another substance to dissolve the body quickly and keep the Breen secrecy.
So I’ve been rewatching DS9 recently and this throwaway line from season 7 has been bothering me. It’s stated that no one has ever seen one without their suit, but Dukat and Kira incapacitate a pair when they go to rescue Zial and use their suits as disguises to infiltrate the Breen compound. Then at the end of the show Kira does it again on Cardassia. Presumably Kira would have seen what they looked like underneath while she stripped one for his suit right?
My theory is that they likely have a suit that protects them from the environment around them, and then a second, combat suit that is layered on top of or attached on the previous one.
You forgot about the one Breen that was captive with Martok, Tain, and Dr. Bashir, plus a Romulan female, when Garak and Worf were captured by the dominion. That breen helped ot with the escape plan.
All I know about the Breen is what's in the expanded universe novels, in those books there are multiple species in the Confederacy in which they all wear the suits in order to completely eliminate racism because you can't tell the race of whoever you're talking to, they are all Breen regardless of species.
Their appearance in Lower Decks just raised a potential lore mine for one of the characters. Melee oriented Jack Ransom immediately went for his phaser mere seconds in his encounter with them (didn't even try to do his usual punch attacks) which hints he faced against the Breen in the Dominion War.
@@noabsolutelynot3660 oh definitely but compared to Mariner's self destructive - suicidal tendencies, Ransom's Breen PTSD is very out of left field so it hints the Breen got to him pretty hard for him to not even attempt his usual attack patterns (barehanded melee).
Given that Kira wears a Breen suit on Cardassia during the final days of the Dominion war, it's very likely she knows what a Breen looks like, unless she just found the suit empty somewhere.
I like to think the suits (or the Breen themselves) are outfitted with a device that vaporizes the body within moments of death. They don't destroy the suit, though, because they know it's *much* creepier to kill a Breen and take the helmet off, only to find that there's nothing there.
I remember a episode where they talk about the home world being a Paradise planet and that it's peculiar that they wear refrigeration units for some reason
The books did a fantastic job exploring the Breen Confederacy; also their energy dampening weapon DIDN'T affect Klingons...that was the whole reason the Klingons were pushed to the forefront during the war.
Partially correct. At the first conflict the weapon effected all but ONE Klingon ship, apparently they had a Klingon version of Jordi Õ_Õ onboard that had modified the ship making the ship (accidentally?) Immune to the breen weapon. The rest of the Klingon fleet was decimated at that battle. However after that first battle the Klingon fleet that had remained behind and all newly made Klingon ships were able to be rapidly modified in the same manor as that sole surviving Klingon ship making them immune to the effects as well. That lead to them being pushed to the forefront because the federation and romulans took longer to adapt the Klingon modifications to their respective tech. But they all managed to make the modifications after some time and at that point the weapon was rendered totally useless against everyone.
I thank you, Rick of in-game on your rather hmmm insightful review of The Breen. Now in all these years no one has thought of capturing a few breen and volunteering them for some experimental voyages of discovery. I'm sure ways can be thought of to allow them to keep their gelatinous state without their uniforms, therefore allowing for a more engaging inspection. LLAP 🖖
*they may not be able to do so...if anything they would be more interested in their technology than what passes for their biology as mentioned on a reddit commentary thread*
Their technology and their ships, yes. Their encounter suits, yes. Their entire biologies would most likely be converted to technology covering the skeleton, the skeleton the only solid and stable part of their biology, and only assimilating their brain long enough to absorb the information before converting that into a brainlike processor. So... more absorb than assimilate.
What would be funny if the the Breen-s habitual extreme caution and acting mysterious lead to the Borg barely even being aware of their existence. I can imagine the borgs attempt to gather info and assimilate some Breen like this. Borg cube enters Breen space - Never to return, collective never learns what happened to it. Attempted capture of Breen ships by the borg in neutral territories. - After the fifth time the breen ship being captured just exploded before anything could be learned from it, the collective stopped trying. Attempted assimilation of captured Breen from third party. - Biological discintiveness lost to suspected self destruct implant that turned the Bleens body into unrecognizable degraded biomass. Cold suit provided no useful new technology or insight for the collective. Attempted information gathering and summary based on own experiences and data assimilated from others. - Precious little information recovered, files mysteriously lost from the collectives data net shortly after, including own records of previous encounters. Breens very existence dismissed as myth created by some of the assimilated species by the collective. Breen territory is now marked on the collectives starmaps, as one giant navigational hazard to be avoided by Borg ships in the future.
It is rather interesting that back in the Dominion war, they "wanted earth". That reinforces the Idea that they are worried about humanity/the Federation. A treath that can not be openly or indipendantly engaged, but still must be fought. Also didn't Weyoun say that the breen Homeworld actually had a mild climate?
Breen are secretly just Human free-market capitalists, forced off Earth centuries ago. The propaganda calls them "Augments" and "Genetically Engineered Tyrants".
Weyoon once remarked that the Breen homeworld is not the frozen wasteland people expect it to be and that it, in fact, has a temperate climate, the Breen are perfectly capable of surviving at room temperature and that no one knows what they're really hiding under those helmets.
If I'm not mistaken, he said it wasn't a frozen wasteland but much more amiable, but that doesn't stop it from being cold, so while our perception may be that's -100C, it may very well be, by that statement, -30C or something like that
Could be the Breen were decieving everyone on what planet is their home world. If your worried about someone having a fleet drop out of warp as close as possible to the planet and nuking it wouldn't it be better to tell everyone the center of your government is a minor colony you don't care about instead of the actual home world?

What if the Breen were a former member of The Federation or mutant humans that would explain the hostility towards the Federation and particularly the Klingons?

Still, nothing will ever compare to that episode* where Captain Kirk find some Protomolecule residue in a Prothean ruin and needs to travel forwards in time to get help from Picard's enterprise and her crew, to stop an unknown threat from both the Protomolecule creators AND from the Reaper invasion!!!! Best Episode EVER!!!
* = It's possible that this might have been a dream that I confused with a real episode...

I get what you're saying, which means that I don't think I explained my own position very well. Let me try this:
It seems like starfleet is the Earth Space Fleet, rather than the Federation Space Fleet.
I think it could be interesting if, secretly, Breen were to turn out to be to humans what the Romulans are to Vulcans.
@@funkmantim2661 That's surprisingly inaccurate. Though there are a lot of factors involved, It generally takes more energy to heat a space up than to cool it down.

Sadly the enigma has been revealed.
In an episode of DS9, I recall Weyoun describing the Breen home world as being green, lush and warm which made him wonder why they wear refrigeration suits.
That is if Weyoun was telling the truth. He was having one of his traditional passive aggressive conversations with Damar at the time.
Looks like it was just a superior species complex.
Tbh, I kinda like that they are the mystery men of Trek---altho that ammonia-based thing is interesting.

Or was it their home world? We can never truly know.
Yeah and that poisoned drink for ducat was "quite toxic"
I think our measurement of "quite pleasant" isn´t the same as Weyouns, maybe.
"I hear their home world is quite pleasant." Perhaps, but I wouldn't count on much of a cafe culture.
In DS9 it is specially stated that the Breen homeworld is of typical human tempratures. Which is then further mentioned as to the mystery of the Breen's refrigeration suits
Yes Weyoun tells Damar this
The strange ship that the NX-01 encounters in "Fight or Flight" may be a Breen ship.
Yeah, I noticed that too. The brain-sucking aliens.
i love the beta canon explination for all the weirdness and conflicting facts: that the Breen are multiple species part of a group that took the federations 'we are all one' to such an extreme that they wear the armor so that no one discriminates even accidentally.

in DS9 Damar and Weyoun talked about the Breen homeworld.
The Breen are the Valakians who remained after Archer and Phlox did passive genocide on their species... Chuck Sonnenburg's best fan theory.
I hated that episode they caused extinction of a species just becouse another one might emerge if they are dead.
I love that theory. Would show how fucked up StarFleet philosophy sometimes is.
I subscribe to that theory myself. Beautifully karmic.
Long live SFDebris
Since we're on the subject of Enterprise, I'll put forth the idea that they're Kreetassans who decided that showing your face is offensive.
It could be that the Breen are " Humans" and other species that we already know about that just didn't want to be part of the federation. That would explain why they don't have any dealings with them.
Real human Breeing
That would make sense, not all humans want to stay in the egalitarian society of the Federation.
*was curious about that one as well...perhaps it's best no one actually knows or remembers what they look like if given the opportunity to do so*
@@scottmantooth8785 apparently there are several Breen species. one requires refrig suits and the soldier Breen are of a race that melts when you kill them.
Or maybe they found extra suits
The big question is: how did the Federation not get a single body to study when the Breen attacked Earth?
Per voyager's Tuvok: they apparently have organic ships like species 8472 although probably a conglomerate of organic material and technology
Plot Twist: The Breen are actually just sentient tribbles.
Well, no wonder the Klingons are so terrified of them!
Im glad that not even Star Trek Online revealed how they look like beneath the mask. Sometimes a mystery worth more than a thousand pictures.
Yeah, abouth that, you don't want to see ST Discovery if you want to still in the Breen like that
Technically no one “in” the Federation has seen a Breen but Kira Nerys has seen some form of Breen, twice.

Klingons beamed them all up first, probably to stuff ane mount above their heartha back home.
In some sources the Breen suits are fitted with self-destructs, explosives, corrosives, or toxins which make recovering their bodies a fatal mistake.
Maybe their bodies dissolve when they die, like how a Changeling turns to ash, basically.
@@Paulafan5 I agree. There is the episode where Kira and Dukat rescue his daughter from the Breen, and they both wear Breen suits they steal from them. Somehow they forgot to check what Breen look like inside the suits LOL.
Perhaps it was so hideous she doesn't even want to remember it, let alone describe it to others 🤔
My theory is that they likely have a suit that protects them from the environment around them, and then a second, combat suit that is layered on top of or attached on the previous one.
Exactly. Surely Kira would have reported what she saw. Especially, as she later became a Federation officer.
This is the way.
We are the breen lower your shields and power down your weapons....
That`s why I don`t like expanded universes. The assumption like this could be done by 9 y.o. boy
Their appearance in Lower Decks just raised a potential lore mine for one of the characters. Melee oriented Jack Ransom immediately went for his phaser mere seconds in his encounter with them (didn't even try to do his usual punch attacks) which hints he faced against the Breen in the Dominion War.
I'm pretty sure almost every officer on the Cerritos served in some capacity during the Dominion war. We know Mariner was on DS9.
@@noabsolutelynot3660 oh definitely but compared to Mariner's self destructive - suicidal tendencies, Ransom's Breen PTSD is very out of left field so it hints the Breen got to him pretty hard for him to not even attempt his usual attack patterns (barehanded melee).
I love SF Debris theory that the Breen are the remnants of the people Doctor Phlox let die in that horrible Enterprise episode.

Neil before the Breen...they are masters of programmable virtual reality!
That have helped us expose national and international corruption
Given that Kira wears a Breen suit on Cardassia during the final days of the Dominion war, it's very likely she knows what a Breen looks like, unless she just found the suit empty somewhere.
I like to think the suits (or the Breen themselves) are outfitted with a device that vaporizes the body within moments of death. They don't destroy the suit, though, because they know it's *much* creepier to kill a Breen and take the helmet off, only to find that there's nothing there.
I do enjoy your will researched information, I don't have the wear for all. You take the pleasure of being a fan to a higher level. THANKS

I remember a episode where they talk about the home world being a Paradise planet and that it's peculiar that they wear refrigeration units for some reason
Shady shifty and devious. Of course the Cardassians have an embassy on Breen, they are kindred spirits.
Fascinating. Appearance aside, no one else sees the Breen at Star Trek's answer to the Mandalorians of Star Wars?
LLAP 🖖

Would the Borg bother to assimilate the Breen....🤔
How would that even work?
Can you do one about Guinan's people, the El-Aurians? Thanks.
