Europa Clipper: NASA’s Incredible Hunt for Alien Life
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 вер 2022
- Set to launch in 2024, Europa Clipper is one of the biggest, most-complex craft NASA has ever designed. Larger than a basketball court, and equipped with nine cutting-edge instruments, it’s going to try to answer one of the most-profound questions of all - Are we alone in the universe?

Not gonna lie, if Simon and the team created a strictly space channel, I don’t think I’d ever watch anything else.
Same
Science projects seems appropriate. Casual scientist also has a nice sound.

Okay how about Casual Science Project
Simon, I work on Europa Clipper at JPL, helping Southwest Research Institute with their MASPEX instrument. Thanks for the exciting (and creepy) plug! NASA doesn't market itself nearly well enough to engage the public, and it's left to people like you to relate complicated things like this to the people who pay for it. All of the instruments on Clipper are astonishing examples of engineering that will enable cutting edge science, and your production does a great job of communicating that to those that value knowledge. For that, I thank you.
Do you know why it isn't powered by RTGs but gargantuan PV arrays?
@@PBeringer That decision was made before I began working on the mission, so I have no insider information on that. I can say that the plutonium needed for an RTG powering a Stirling engine of the type that is qualified for the Jovian radiation environment is more expensive per watt than today's solar arrays.
Wowwww 😮
Do visit Mount Kailash Mansarovar. You will get many answers I feel.
@@drdcon1152 While you're here, can I ask you a laymen question that's probably a bit ignorant?
Why haven't they engineered some sort of device with sensors and a cable that could melt down into the oceans below?
Is it too expensive or just not practical because of the radiation problem, or something else?
I've wondered most of my life about the possibilities of life below Europa's icy crust, and I really hope we can find out in my lifetime!
Thank you.
Shaquille O'Neil is my favourite unit of measurement
“All these worlds are yours. Except Europa. Attempt no landing there.”
'2010' Arthur C. Clark
Yeah. You beat me to the punch. The obelisk apes are NOT gonna be happy.
Eggzactly!
I saw 2010 in December 1984 when I was 17, then immediately ran out and bought the 2001 & 2010 books. I’ve been waiting for us to go to Europa ever since. I can’t wait.
*HAL-9000: **_"Will I dream?"_*
*DR. CHANDRA: **_"I don't know...."_*

In fairness, we aren’t attempting any landings. This is why aliens should consult their lawyers before issuing mysterious warnings like that.
It's me again; the father with the 11 year old son who is fascinated by outer space, and wants to work for NASA in its mission control. I'm excited to, once again, share Simon's space video with him. It's exciting to think my son may actually be involved towards the end of the Clipper's mission. I hope he will follow his dreams. And, yes we would like six or seven more videos about the Clipper.
I hope your son follows his dreams! I wanted to study astrophysics from a young age, and my parents fed my mind with everything they could find! I ended up choosing a different path later (neuroscience) but it's awesome to see another dad so invested in his son, it really does make a difference.
@@andyyang3029 thank you for the kind words of encouragement to my son. I tell him to pursue his dreams, even if others don't like them, because it's his dream, not theirs.
Do you watch Scott Manley or Dr Becky?
I will never understand that this quality channel is on UA-cam and not BBC , HBO or behind a pay wall. Wauw...
I have literally been measuring this entire space craft since the prop module was a piece of sheetmetal laying on a table back in 2019. We were just at NASA Langley Research Center this summer to do the high gain antenna characterization. I've touched literally every single hole on the prop module a dozen times over throughout the build.
Now go to DART which crashes into an asteroid in a couple days to see if we can knock it off course... I have all kinds of projects I've worked on that you guys should cover! Like Dragonfly - an SUV sized rover that will FLY around Titan - a moon of Saturn. Or do one on the Louvoir mission that will make the James Webb Space Telescope's images look like it was taken with a disposable camera. Or for the super sciency people do one on PACE which will use UV through IR wavelengths to scan the entire earth every 3 days to track what micro organisms are living in the oceans by analyzing the color of the water.
I'm not the coolest kid on the block, but I do have the coolest job!
what is the pressure in the ocean of europa? at the bottom and just at the contact line with the ice?
Measuring things by Shaq should be the new official world measurement system. It's so much more relatable and makes so much sense to visualize.
Great video! I actually loved it! As I have a solid background in sciences, I tend to heavily dislike when non-scientists make videos where they attempt to talk about a subject, going into the science, when it is obvious that the host doesn't have a clue what he's talking about and is just reading the script. And even with the best, most scientifically accurate script out there that does a great job at simplifying the more hardcore aspects of the subject, when the host isn't a scientist specialized in the field he's talking about, the result can never be good...
I loved this video because, contrary to a few earlier ones, it knows it's limitations and doesn't try to go in depth into dense subject matter (such as talking about laws of physics, explaining how some measurement instruments function, etc.). and instead focuses on all the right aspects that the host can present while playing on his strengths: it's more a Science/Space News Video where the scientific project is explained in layman's terms, focusing on the what this mission/probe is, why it's being built and sent, what the mission hopes to achieve, when or giving a timeframe, and touching a bit on the how, without going into too much details.
What annoys me today are the silly faux-documentaries on the history channel and travel channel that try to pass off the supernatural as real. This does nothing but confuse people and convince the naive to believe megalodon is still hunting the oceans. It’s absurd. I was done when they aired a show about mermaids being real.
what is the pressure in the ocean of europa? at the bottom and just at the contact line with the ice?
As a science ENTHUSIAST I've gotta say I am excited
From what iv learned about Lovecraft it wouldn't take much to give him nightmares
Hehhhehheh
PLEASE do the 7 more episodes.... PLEASE.
WE NEED A SPACE CHANNEL PLEASE!!
Great video!
I think you meant that oxygen is "reactive", not "radioactive".
Inspiring how far we've come at this point and where we're gonna go. Great video. 🔥
Did I hear 7 more videos on this!! I’m in!
We could do 7 more videos on this
Don't threaten me with a good time, fact boi 😎
Suggestion: Gateway Arch in St Louis
Love the space videos of any kind
I really enjoyed this video. Well done to Simon and the team.
I watched a movie called Europe Report a while ago and it’s actually really cool and terrifying
Weren't we warned in 2001 a space odyssey that Europs is off limits? The obelisk monkeys are gonna be unhappy. just saying.
yea i saw that it was pretty good
Fascinating video!! Excellent job Simon & team 👏💯🙌🙂
I’m so happy this is happening in my life time.
Please do more space love those videos.
Great video, Simon! I was just describing Europa to my wife yesterday. I'm eagerly awaiting this mission as I have for decades. I'm just hoping and praying to all the Gods in existence that I live long enough to see it arrive and at least some results back. I'm already 60, so the odds are not great.
I'm 52 and I'm worried about exactly the same thing, I want to know.
Europa lander! Oh no, we're going to be in trouble: “All these worlds are yours. Except Europa. Attempt no landing there.”
I freaking love the explanation of MASS SPEC!! The locker room perv!! Freaking great!!!
Did PETA get mad at you for using elephants for scale so you swapped to Shaq? Lol
kudos for proper orientation in your animation! so very tired of Voyager animation showing the craft with its huge antenna pointed in the direction of travel.
Thank you for taking the time to make tis video. It was very useful and informative.
Of course we're not alone. The entire universe?
These are getting more and more interesting. Well researched and presented. Nice one Simon.
That's it all future measurements must be in cloned Shaquille O'Neal.
Cloned *adult* Shaquille O'Neal. All fractions must be stated fully. "It both weighs and measures lengthwise two-thirds of a cloned Shaquille O'Neal..."
Cant wait for the next Sideprojects episode where we discuss Simon's Shaquille O'Neal cloning facility in the sub-sub basement.
As always - fascinating! And you'll recall that that was Mr. Spock's highest compliment for new information.
Shaquille O'Wendigo 🤣
*SIMON: **_"Europa is like your underpants after the end of a sweaty gym session"_*
😆😆😆😆😆
I love that Shaq is now a term of measurement! 😂
Finally, a universal measurement for everyone.
I once saw the Europa Clipper being made live in person!
I’m excited for the things we (hopefully) learn in the coming decade. My name is etched into the Europa Clipper, kinda special.
Fantastic video.
And super fantastic yodel at 11:39.
14 illegally cloned Shaquille O'Neals stacked on top of each other. FINALLY, a unit of measurement we can all easily relate to.
Hey could you make a video about the Sprint missile which went so fast it became incandescent?
This is so subnautica and I LOVE IT. Cannot wait until we send a submarine there!
Shaq was on an ad before this video and you referenced throughout it. Now I'm going to be thinking about some old ass basketball/movie star all day.
Exceptional video
My largest takeaway here is that I wince hard when Simon says "cheeky sniff".
Seriously tho, more science please fact boi 😉
Very cool mission
I get kinda bummed that Juno gets so little press coverage these days...
It's fantastic spacecraft, fully able to seal with Jupiter's radiation!
Also, I believe it is the first craft to film the orbital mechanics of Jupiter's moons while it was on approach to the planet! Actually, as I recall it is the first craft to film ANY orbital mechanics!
What if there's relatively advanced societies down there? It would be cool to be the horrifying space monsters for a change.
Wait ......we're not?
There’s Crab People down there. They have a pretty advanced society kinda like Greek empire level, it’s quite impressive actually… for crabs. For Crab People it’s mediocre but pleasant, considering the lack of alternatives. They do a funny sideways dance.
Sober Vsauce can't scare you, he doesn't exist.
Sober Vsauce:
I watch so many of your videos, I really think I see you driving about over here in Northern Ireland , Magherafelt, or its men who are trying to look like you, it’s quite amazing. The glasses, beard, shaven head, flashy car, etc.
Notification Squad! :)
Simon The Channel Whistler. Damn bruh, every time I look you have another channel of pure indulgence..
Everything gave Lovecraft nightmares. Water, math, black people, the Irish, air conditioning.
One of my favorite. 😊
Shaq will be my ONLY measuring stick going forward!
Simon, you're never alone in the universe. You have me (and Danny I guess)
Thoroughly interesting video, thank you.
Rhyme Magnetometer with spectrometer! You're making my eyes water!
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
A much, much better investment than manned space exploration.
SPAAAAACEEEEE!!!
I think 'Shaquille-O'Neals' (Shaqs)could be the unit of measurement that we could all finally agree on!😂
I think you're doing this more as your videos progress...
I love your funny metaphors and commentaries. 🖖🥰👍
I've been loving metaphors since I was 7. My classmates never understood them and thought I was just nuts. 😁
“All these worlds are yours…except Europa…”
Cool ending. +1 great video, keep it up! +1+1+1+1+1
That ship looked like a Flute, not a Clipper. Cross reference Cutty Sark.
Not the intro I was expecting. I was expecting something closer to "they say the ocean is deadlier than space, but what about an ocean *in* space?"
It's such a shame now, when i was a kid there was so much to look forward to. Now we still haven't investigated these moons and any projects that do so take a decade to see the data on.
I kinda think that it would have been easy to give Lovecraft nightmares.
GPS be like "In 410 Shaquille O'neals, turn right."
Underpants in a Gym? I nearly spilled my beer!.
“All these worlds are yours. Except Europa. Attempt no landing there.”
Please 7 more videos on this
Recommendation for a future video: Brenner Basisistunnel. The future longest railway tunnel in the world connecting Austria and Italy through the Alps.
Imagine sending those radio signals into Europa and getting something back…that’d be an interesting room to be in
Simon "rather than getting off mas"....were not thinking "spects" to be the word🤣
I clocked at least 6 uses of the word "unimaginable" in this episode
Deep Stone Crypt theme intensifies. (shoutout to any Destiny 2 Players.)
Shaq clones is now my standard unit of measurement
A sneaky sniff, science has become understandable.
Who else is up for 7 more videos on Clipper?
Yes Simon, fucking outstanding
When we land, there's gonna be a mountain of solid diamond... 🤣
Please do the 7 other videos.
Just gotta say, I love the new measurement unit of "illegally cloned Shaquille O'Neals laying head to toe." That's gotta be up with with my favorite for mass, the "blue whale."
The water is more precious than anything else. Guatenteed that Nestlé has stock in Eurpoa.
SimonCon Summer 2024 Atlanta…come on!
Maybe you could also do a video on JUICE. The ESA mission also heading to Jupiter to look at it's icy moons.
*everything* gave H.P. Lovecraft nightmares. Air conditioning gave H.P. Lovecraft nightmares (see "Cool Air")
The Picture in the House
There are in fact 100 billion galaxies, each of which contain something like a 100 billion stars. Think of how many stars, and planets, and kinds of life there may be in this vast and awesome universe.
Carl Sagan
And they don't call . . . They dont write . . .
With all of Simon's channels and sheer output, I'll bet it's not just Shaq that's illegally cloned...
kind of doubt it took very much to give ol lovecraft nightmares
I seen a video yesterday about this, it was reporting that the radar system on this was invented by a young university student, very interesting.
Isn't Ganymede also thought to have a subsurface ocean? With its magnetosphere, it could offer a lot of potential. Frankly, we've got a bunch icy moons we need to study in depth around jupiter and Saturn. This could be where cooperation between NASA, ESA and JAXA could be vital. They could cover territory the others miss and specialize in different components of missions.
Edit:
Wrote comment before I finished the video and you covered it.
"Would give HP Lovecraft nightmares."
Not hard, Simon. That little man was afraid of everything, even before you look at the immense racism.
Cool
In Picard Season 2 - the story arc involved a 2024 Nasa trip to Europa - except that one had astronauts on it. 👩🚀 So there is a real mission but unmanned - amazing 😃
For a moment at the very start, I thought this was the start of a Ephemeral Rift video. x'D
I am ready for space octopus.
