I know this is an old video, but since I only recently began following your channel, I am sure you understand. Thank you for some of the tips in this video. I grew up in Northern Nevada. I am no stranger to off roading, more specifically rock crawling. I have since lived in Alaska for the last 15 years, and have expanded my off road repertoire to Mud and muskeg. Sand however, has always been an arch nemesis to me. It seems if I am going to get myself stuck and really buried into something, mud, snow, rocks etc. just wont do it. Sand? "hold my beer, while I dig out." lol. I do air my tires down, and I try to avoid sharp turn maneuvers as much as possible. My issues tend to start most often when I start to lose traction and then the axle wrap starts. On my Dodge 2500 with a manual transmission, I have found, running in 4 Lo and using third gear through most of my sand driving has help me stay away from axle wrap and such and I have not had nearly as many problems as I used to. However, on my Jeep XJ with an automatic transmission... Any advice?
Much of it comes with experience. I’ve found every sand type is different and can vary depending on the heat of the day. Basically get on the power and hold it but if she starts to dig get off the power instantly and back up in your tracks a bit and go again. Rinse and repeat. With a bit of experience it’s hard to get stuck in sand. Also you go go as low as 8psi if needed but often I go to 12on the rear and 13 up front.
Absolutely correct. 15PSI is a good starting point but yes I often end up at 10PSI depending on the type of sand. In my Bundera. RJ70 with 33s I go to 7-8PSI in soft sand.
I really like how you respect Dune The young kids are into it full bore, coming over Dune left right and center, poor Dune is left a mess. As an older fella, you were gentle with Dune, you took your time with her. Be like Matt, be gentle with Dune. That way, we all get to a have turn on her.
-- I can agree with that. Nowadays here in the states I see those little side-by-sides all over the dunes of Lake Michigan with destroyed front suspensions. And these kids are astonished when I roll up in a stock 2004 Tahoe Z71. Truth is, these people should just get bikes, or quads. Slow and easy wins the race.
Quality content, very entertaining, very funny, informative and educational I loved every minute of this video man. We need more youtube guys like yourself!
MadMatt4WD No worries I've only watched this video so far but I plan to watch them all when I have a spare moment... how the hell don't you have a million more subs than you do! awesome quality video
***** You tell me?? Everyone who I talk to tells me how much they love our work and yet it seems a slow road to grow. Anyway we are having fun and appreciate every Sub and FB like we get.
It was nice of that fish to catch a pole for you. :D I almost expected to see you dragging the pole behind you across the dunes in the outro. One thing that that has saved my bacon a few times after getting bogged down in sand is to drop tire pressure down to 1psi. Dig it out so it's not on the frame, and it usually will climb right out of you can keep from spinning the tires and digging. Might need to rock it out. It's risky, so be careful and limp slow and straight as possible a short distance to a better spot to air up.
Yes once the paper came of the fish it was fine. LOL I've used the technique you mention to get out. I think 1psi is a bit low but maybe 8psi would suffice.
Here in 🇿🇦 South Africa, fifty years ago, I knew but 5 owners of 4x4's. These ranged from LR to TLC, and only the military had Jeeps. Then Chrysler imported CJ5 and CJ7, but it was that Daddy Longlegs 2.2 Hilux and Datsun Tracker that started the trend, plus Suzuki Samurai. We tamed Africa with Ford F100 and Chev C10, plus a few Dodge 100's. All 2WD. My Dad used the only International 4x4 I ever knew. My own sand driving methodology was this: - 0.8 bar front - 1.1 bar rear - 3rd gear - "Mexican speedocruise One didn't really get stuck, because we thought and looked ahead, and avoided situations. Most here won't believe through what thick, heavy sand I drove with my W114 Mercedes-Benz. Looking back forty years later, it looks insane to me. But, then, that's how we rolled. Boomers do things and know stuff.
damn good video Matt! i think you should mention that speed where your vehicle is driving thru the dry sand, and where it rides on top. it is about 30 MPH in my Wrangler less fuel waste and easy to drive if you can stay on top. plus you keep that momentum going in your favor. you are a hell of a fisherman too !
Very funny Mad Matt. I thought your transport of the fish to the vehicle was a bit goofy. Now tell the truth: Where did you get that fish? It didn't look as fresh as it should have. Here's a tip. When they're a bit stiff like that just bend them back and forth in their normal swimming motion and they'll loosen up again Cheers!
Damn Matt, I just learnt the best way to go fishing.. Love it!... that's my kind of fishing.. "throwing a line in"........ That's the closest I'd ever get to fishing also.
L😝l, you’re a funny man. Great tips. My fishing rods need constant supervision, never mind a fish 🎣 dragging it into the depths. Even seagulls, or bystanders can snatch them and run😆. You did the no look everything toss, w🤪w!!! And you caught a red snapper 😆😆. Too funny.
@@MadMatt4WD WOW a you-tuber who reply's to subscribers , im impressed mate , thanks a ton . Ill call them up and ask , thanks , thumbs up all day !!!!
I'm enjoying your videos. I have done some beach travel at Frazer Island but, as I love my 4x4, I am not a fan of driving through salt water. I can see though that there may well be times when travelling, that I'll simply need to do it on the odd occasion. I'm just curious if you've considered a post beach wash of the vehicle and the common errors people make.
Hi Bill, I VERY rarely have to go into salt water anymore than my tire depth. I once got hub depth to get out of a camp and it's not worth it. The damage was not welcome. Your make a good idea and at some point i'll look at doing such a video.
Fishing mad mat style. I was laughing when he threw the rod in and says I'll come back for the fish later. Then picks up the snapper and drugs the rod on the ground
Hi mad mat.. im getting into beach driving I have a pajero tdiesel with alterrain tyres stock suspension. My destination on hand is stockton beach.. what recovery gear should I take cheers
Hi Mate, A shovel and air down your tyres and keep up your speed. (not to fast though) 1st high range should work well. If you have a mate take a snatch strap and air damper just make sure you have rated recovery points fitted to both trucks.
What a great video and funny too... love your fishing technique. Maybe I should try throwing my rod in the ocean... would probably get a better result than i do now hahahaha. Had to sub, good tips with a fun attitude.... love it!
Hi Muggsy, Yes it would but only for light sand driving, IE driving over the high tide line and onto the hard beach. the biggest challenge is the deeper ruts made by other 4wds. for your first trip take a mate with a 4wd who can tow you if you get stuck. MadMatt

LOL glad you got a laugh. Is that fish a red snapper? I didn't know that. :)
Good video. Mental note to never let you borrow one of my fishing poles. lol
Is it a pole or a fishing stick. That is the question. 😂😂😂
My tires are 40 psi , so when you say drop to 15 psi do I put it to 25 psi or all the way down to 15 psi ? I'm confused sorry
TheAvenger626 15 psi literally
Drop to 15PSI. Sorry for the confusion.
Wait so this fishing technique not only catches fish but it also guts it far out amazing

Good tips and amazing fishing skills
😂.
This Pismo Crossing should be done at 2 hours past low tide. Best time. Check the tidal chart times, wait 2 hours past the low tide time then cross.
Just so you know this was filmed in Australia at a place called Blacksmiths beach. :)
Diesel vs petrol on sand what would be your pick and why
Depends on the purpose. For fun and a day at the beach petrol for the response power. For a remote desert crossing a diesel for economy
pends on rubber a 10 ply heavy treaded will need to be let down more than a 4,6,8 ply?
True
Nice, good up mate.
Thanks :)

Hey mate what about 4H or 4L on sand , should we always use low ?
Generally 4h is used on sand unless it’s really deep heavy sand.

useful info for a beginner.
Can you drive through soft sand in 4H in your 80? Or do you have to shift into 4L?
It depends on the sand but generally I can do it in H4
in the back next to the recovery gear,
i have a reminder sticker saying,
"air down dummy" 😉
From memory I was down around 14PSI.
