    “Sky-high” Parts 1 & 2

Somehow there’s something about Aperture outside and up on the surface that feels wrong but at the same time oh so right, it’s possible that’s just the rush of real oxygen flooding your brain though.

it’s interesting that they used old aperture assets for this map, it seems to be about as overgrown as your average first few portal 2 maps, and those had assets from portal 1, but destroyed. I just found that a bit interesting, anyways great video as always!

Yeah I lso noticed that, kinda weird how stuff from the deep dark underground fits nicely on the surface.

@For_Builds i find it interesting too, its always really cool to see how creatively people can reuse assets from the games to create something that feels 100% new like this.

Thank you for playing! I'm very glad you enjoyed it. My puzzles ar rather easy (but fun), but I always try to make it up with nice visuals. I'm really sorry for the breaks in Part 1, not sure how I missed that, or how long it went without anyone realizing.
By the way, the second logo was in the outdoors chamber corridor in Part 2, behind some blocks. You can slightly see it at 12:56 at the wall in the left.
Anyway, I've been making a series of classic overgrown style maps. Once the series is finished. I'll probably submit that 👀
    Great video and thank you!
EDIT: Another easter egg was an Above Aperture poster behind the missing panels in the first chamber.

      Hey Cake!
I love all of your overgrown-outside maps. Love how theyre inspired by above aperture which is a great mappack but your maps just add some nice things to it.

@TheCakeTubby thank you so much for making and recommending these, and of course thank you for sharing your work the community! I apologise that it took so long for me to get around to playing them.
The puzzle were quite easy but like i said this really feels like you are building something BIG and these would be the perfect introduction to it, if you do make more of these i'd of course love to see them.
No need to apologise i shouldn't of gone out there, i saw a weird portalable spot and figured that must be where the paw is hidden lol, is it something that would be fairly easy to fix? like can you update that surface to not accept portals? you don't really need to though so i wouldn't worry about it.
i just checked that timestamp! you've got to be kidding lol, i was that close?? like a meter away from it lol i didn't even spot it when i was noclipping for screenshots!
I had a look at your workshop and saw you have more maps with this lovely level of detailed aperture, any others you'd particularly recommend checking out?
Again, thank you so much for the maps, and for watching and commenting too!

@@ngeruma I might submit Decay once I have more parts, although I think it's too easy for a video considering that the style is nothing new.

0:13 - They've been posting a lot of really fancy maps lately, especially the ones they've shared on your server :P
    3:16 - A skybox?
4:20 - Huh, I thought of a different solution entirely. Put the second cube on the cube faith plate button, then respawn the first cube. It launches up to the exit button, then move the second cube to the player faith plate button
    6:59 - ngeruma!
8:42 - That was the smoothest transition I've ever seen. Bravo sir!
13:29 - Technically, it's a girl, given the whole "turret wife serenade" thing and the Cara Mia song :P

I had a little look at Cake's workshop page, looks like they've gotten really good at the overgrown dilaperture aesthetic
3:16 i meant the stuff you use in between your playable space and the skybox, the stuff that gives the impression everything doesn't just end, another comment referred to them as "Depth Queues"
4:20 interesting, i think, you might have actually found the more complicated solution than me for once?? lol ;)
6:59 according tot he comment by cake i was like just a meter or so from the 2nd hidden paw, looked in it's direction and everything :)
8:42 that one wasn't anything special to be honest, just a jump cut, but i did spend a good while trying to lineup my crosshair before recording part 2
13:29 i wasn't too far off then maybe, i've always thought of the fat turret as the soprano because it does the higher sounding bit in Cara Mia, but i will be honest and say i've never actually looked in to it :D

What a cool set of maps! Beautiful and fun. So rare to be set outside. I also liked the angled light bridge panels. Very nice touch.
Don't know if there is a common term for what you called "skyline junk", but in my business, we call that "depth queues". That encompasses things like scale, parallax, environmental hazing etc.
As far as the big boy turret, if it was male, it's most likely be a tenor, unless it can reach a really high register(like Dimash can), it'd then be a countertenor. Female soloists would most like be sopranos.

    • @ngeruma
      @ngeruma  Рік тому +1

BurningCakeDoesAche did a great job with detailing these space and keeping the sense of huge aperture even outdoors like that, easy puzzles but yeah feels like the intro levels to a much bigger mod series.
thanks for teaching me a new term and yeah that makes perfect sense for what to call it, Depth Queues would most likely be the proper term in level design too thinking about it, i mean especially since level design and special effects have crossed over into each other so much now.
I always thought of that fat turret as the soprano because it does the higher sounding solo bit in Cara Mia Addio. i will admit to honestly never having looked it up though :)
      As always, thanks for watching!

    • @savasyn
      @savasyn Рік тому +1

As it's been quite a few years since I finished Portal 2, I had to look it up and indeed, it was sung by Ellen McLain of GLaDOS fame, so you are right, that turret is a soprano. The wiki says that having that big turret was a nod to the saying "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings" :)
