The somgkran festival is a Buddhist festival. You celebrate it with a water cleansing ceremony. To the young people it's just a big water war and fun and games. But to a devout Buddhist the water ceremony represents a cleansing of old misfortune and a clean start for the new Year.
You can also do both. There 3 days for the festival (not to mention government's special day off +2 days)
Also Songkran festival is originally from Burma ( AKA Thingyan festival)

When Songkran became famous, many countries would claim for Songkran’s originality with their false belief. It’s easy just to claim.
@@alvinjonas1096 Thailand and Myanmar both practice Buddhism and follow the solar calendar for New Year celebrations, tracing these traditions back to India. It’s disrespectful to say Thailand copied Myanmar, as these practices evolved locally. Thai New Year involves pouring water over Buddha statues and elders, which has become a playful water-throwing festivity enjoyed for centuries. Myanmar celebrates this time similarly but calls it Thingyan. To promote cultural understanding, it's better to appreciate each country’s unique celebrations rather than claim one’s own as superior.
