    Your attention to detail on the importance of proper techniques and working clean shows you are definitely a seasoned and experienced professional. I am old school to back in the 70’s working on our rides, it is refreshing to watch true professionals on UA-cam. Thank you for taking us to see underneath, and more importantly sharing your talent and knowledge. Please keep more vids coming on the LC. I have the 2018 LC 500 Inspiration series in Structural Blue, six years and it still invigorates me amazingly, with the muscle car sound and feel, manual paddle shifting and pushing the R’s on this naturally aspirated V-8. - RudyC, Mercer Island, WA

I used to work as a service writer/tire salesman at a local Sears Auto back in the day. Sears Auto rented garage space to a large quick lube chain, on more than 1 occasion they put motor oil in the transmission and transmission fluid in the crankcase. These small plastic pieces are called air deflectors or sometimes air dams. They are used by engineers to control air flow in different parts of the vehicle. This one in front of the tire, in specific, is generally used to reduce the drag on the vehicle by reducing the air impact to the tires surface area. These are some of the things they use air tunnels for when engineering the car. Science beyond my pay grade! Lol. Thanks for the comment!

    Is it better to let the engine reach normal operating temperature before checking the oil level?

    • @OrtoTechGarage
      @OrtoTechGarage  3 місяці тому

      @Marks.Reviews Although all fluids expand as they heat up, it's not really necessary. Just let it run long enough to circulate the oil throughout the engine and then turn it off and let it sit long enough to drain back to the bottom of the engine. 30 seconds for each is plenty. Ideally, you will have already warmed up the engine before performing the service as well. The fluid will drain faster and more thoroughly. Thanks!

    I always install plug after filter is removed and some time elapses for draining. The mfr instructions for vertical cartridge filters is to donthis in most cases as these will have a spring loaded drain for filter housing that unscrewing filter cap pulls filter away and opens. If the filter on any engine air locks the oil pump circuit then that oil does not drain out. Does Lexus have any instructions for order of filter service during oil change?

    • @OrtoTechGarage
      @OrtoTechGarage  3 місяці тому

      @jimmyaber5920 Thanks for the comment, Jimmy! Lexus gives no specific detail for how long to drain the oil pan or the oil filter housing. It's always best to let them both drain until they are completely empty, which will leave you with nothing more than a very slow drip at each point. In the video, I let the oil drain completely while putting air in the tires, and you could see before I installed the drain plug, there was barely a drop coming from the hole. The same is true of the filter. The valve you are referring to in the filter housing is the pressure relief valve. This will be drained as much as you possibly can by using the process shown. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed the content and stick around for more. 👍

    Questions:
    1) Why don't you pre fill the filter with some motor oil? Why do you want to start it with no pressure?
    2) Why can't toyota/lexus create a simple way to just crank the motor without firing spark plugs as a way to help build pressure before starting after an oil change?
    3) What mileage is required for oil changes on this motor and what is difference in miles between normal / severe category for oil changes?

    • @OrtoTechGarage
      @OrtoTechGarage  3 місяці тому +6

      @fazman6218 Great questions! I'll try my best to give you my point of view. It's very difficult to prefill a horizontally mounted filter like this one. You may saturate the cartridge and squeeze a couple of ounces of oil in there, but the reward is not worth the mess. Most manufacturers do not specify this procedure in the service procedures, either. The engines today are built to much tighter internal clearances than years ago, and they build pressure very rapidly. The engine bearings and components are never completely void of any oil after draining either. There's is enough lubricant to withstand the 1.5 seconds or so that it takes to get to full pressure. The size of the filter really negates this process as well. When filters hold 0.5 quarts or more, it obviously takes a bit longer to generate oil pressure. These filters are tiny now. These reasons combined are likely why the manufacturers don't waste any effort or lose any sleep over the priming process. If you were building an engine from scratch, I would certainly recommend priming the engine before starting. It's just unnecessary for an oil change. If you have a filter that hangs vertically, you can certainly add some oil easily and give yourself a little extra piece of mind. I dont ever care what the manufacturers state for oil intervals, I've seen too many high mileage engines apart. The ones with frequent synthetic oil changes always look new, have minimal wear, minimal oil leaks, and overall better health. 5,000 miles between synthetic services is the maximum I would go for any vehicle. It's just cheap insurance. Especially when replacement engines on modern cars can cost in the 10's of thousands. $$ I hope that helps! Thanks for commenting and watching!!

      @@OrtoTechGarage One last question that has always been burning for me to ask, I see in the video you are using Mobil1 oil but the Dexos certified oil... shouldn't it be the oil for Japanese cars? I know my Euro cars need A3/B4 spec which is also LL-01 cert... but aside from makeup oil... which spec of oil should be used in Toyota/Lexus?
      Or does it not matter if you are doing short drain OCI's? I am sure the weight matters a lot so I am sure the 5w-30 you put is the right weight for your nevada environment.
      I am not trying to nit pick, these are honest burning questions I have always wondered.

    • @OrtoTechGarage
      @OrtoTechGarage  3 місяці тому +1

      As far as I know, there isn't a specific oil just for Japanese manufactured cars, but I should preface with I am also not an oil specialist. Although there are Euro specific oils that have special formulas for emissions needs, they label them ESP. They are not backward compatible. You may be overthinking the Dexos moniker as that just indicates that it meets, what was, General Motors specific guidelines when they unveiled it years ago. Not that the oil can only ne used where Dexos is required I know Toyota has several specific formulas used in most of their products ranging from 0W16 in the 4 cylinder, to 0W20 in the majority of their products now. These both currently are only offering in a synthetic formula. The Lexus LC500 non-hybrid version calls for 5W30 ILSAC GF-6A which is the most current backward compatible oil for this weight. I wouldn't overthink these designations too much. They can get very confusing. Just follow your owners manual for the proper rating and weight. The turbo powered models I would be more strict with, as they are under a lot more stress. This model Lexus with the V-8 naturally aspirated engine will likely perform well long-term with a variety of options. Changing the oil frequently is far more beneficial than scrutinizing all the different flavors from all the oil manufacturers. And I would only use synthetic oils for anything I own...I hope that helps. I may have to make a deep dive video into all the oil designations and choices in the near future. We used to be safe with the latest SH, SJ, etc, ratings on every model. They've really gone wild with the formulas.

Synthetic is much better and most modern cars require it now. The oil weight is a little less important. I use a 5w30 in our climate, but a slight variation on that is fine. Hope that helps. It's possible the design of the oil pan is different due to the components around the oil pan. There may be a crossmember in the way in the LC necessitating a different layout. I would have to see them side by side.

    Pro tip: You don't need to use any tool to remove any o-ring. Run your fingers in the shape of a big "C" across the 0-ring, pushing it to one side of the filter housing, sort of like you're trying to pinch the 0-ring off the housing. The 0-ring will "loop up," grab and remove.

    You didn't give a reason why you would set the tire pressure higher than what the Mfg. specifies. I can see in the fall as temperatures drop you would want a couple lbs. higher as pressure drops with temperature. But why in summer?
    The last thing most owners of the $100,000+ cars want is to crawl around under it to save a few bucks on an oil change. A true enthusiast who loves their car passionately would, but they likely long ago learned how to change their oil. Not sure who your target market is for this vid...

    • @OrtoTechGarage

      Gary, Thanks for watching and engaging with great questions! We live in the desert here in Las Vegas, and the temperature changes front the daytime high to nighttime lows can vary as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine that with the fact that drivers have been trained by the manufacturers to go with extended oil change intervals, and we tend to see the TPMS lights set of a low pressure indicator more frequently. A few extra pounds seems to help combat those things here. As far as a target audience, I think anyone who could use automotive knowledge would enjoy some of our content, obviously not all. We are trying to include a wide range of topics to appeal to the masses. We have started off with some simple projects and processes to give our viewers a good base line knowledge as we ease into some more complicated things. If you look through the comments on this particular video, you will see that we have inspired a few LC500 owners to attempt their own service, and even provided those who don't intend to do it on their own, a good understanding of the process and materials used when they bring it to a professional for service. Any of this information can be applied to any other vehicle as well. I hope you will stick with us and find some value in some of the other content we provide. We really appreciate your support! 🙏

    any reason why synthetic oil was used.

      I use synthetic oil in everything. Our garages no longer even carry conventional oils because the majority of vehicles we work on, require synthetic. It is a superior product and well worth the additional cost, especially when considering the cost of engines and/or engine repairs. Just think "cheap insurance" The specific oil for this vehicle is 5W30 ILSAC GF-6A. You pick the flavor, as long as it's compatible with the manufacturers recommendations.

    Why change the oil on a 2024 car? Is the owner doing a lot of miles..

      @@Shane-zx4ps The owner requested a break-in oil change. First service on the car after 8 months of ownership. I think doing the oil change after 1500-2000 miles on a brand new engine is a smart idea. You never know what kind of material is accumulating during that period. Cheap insurance...

      @Shane-zx4ps You're welcome! I have yet to service the hybrid. They are pretty rare here. Lexus makes a superb product, and they have the best hybrids of all manufacturers, in my opinion. Enjoy the car, it's very special. Thanks for the comments. 👍

    Change your synthetic oil every 8K or more often. The Owner's Manual recommendation is way too long.

    • @OrtoTechGarage
      @OrtoTechGarage  3 місяці тому

      @dtna I totally agree with you and would even take that interval down to 5,000 miles. I will probably just make a video about this topic soon with all my thoughts, experiences, and concerns about extended oil service intervals. These manufacturers are in the business of selling cars, not making them last for 250,000 miles. Thanks for the comment. 👍

      the interval for the LC is 5k miles anyway, not 10k like most other vehicle intervals out there

    With UA-cam being loaded with millions of DIYer videos, every UA-camr should know that targeting beginners is a waste of time. You don’t need to show us how to open the hood or how to put the gloves on, what you need to do is to make a very professional 5min video not a long 30min documentary. This is free advice to gain more viewers.

    My pet peeve is using a used dirty/used towel to clean the gasket/fastening surfaces. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of cleaning it in the first place? Sorry just being anal.

      @OrtoTechGarage  3 місяці тому

      No worries! It's a fair question. I wouldn't use an excessively dirty rag, specifically dirt or metal particulate on it, but a lightly oiled rag is of no concern. You need to make sure the sealing surfaces are free from large debris, like mud visible dirt, etc. You'll be removing those things with your rag and an oily rag won't leave anything behind that will affect the ability of the gasket and O-ring to seal. If it makes you feel better, just follow your gut and only use a new, lint free towel. There's nothing wrong with that either. You have to feel good about your work when you're done, so don't compromise your own standards. Thanks for watching!
