A setting that would be recommended for about 14 ga steel ...18 volts and 230 ipm using 75/25 and 19 volts with 230ipm using straight co2.
    Then Bend tested both plates using a simple bend test fixture made mostly from 1-1/2" round stock and adapted for a Harbor Freight 20 ton press.

    I'm loving my lincoln 210mp and I'm showing my "tween-age" daughters how to use it, on the mig side. No it's not "The Beast" but it is a great tool and really versatile. It's been my go to for most jobs since I got it 4 months ago. Still haven't used all the settings yet, but I'll use them as I need them. Thanks for the videos. Please keep them coming!

    Reminds me my first straps, geezzz was I pissed when it failed... Now, lacking practice, too much machining not enough welding... Guess the lowering eyesight got something to do also... Love Welding as much as love machining.... Life is fun in the shop :-))

    Great video. Just goes with what I've said for 10 years about"fancy smancy" gas mixes. They have their place.I was elated with it in the mid eighties.
    Then I was pissed because I couldn't find C25 in S.America. I went back to the old days.CO2. After a couple pounds of wire and a proper gas regulator I laughed at myself.
    Hey. It works for beer it **must** be great !
    Ground. Stick out. Gas flow.Use only your ears to adjust wire speed.Good to go.

    Jody, you should do a 3 way comparison/bend test with that machine...one joint tig, one mig, and one stick...er70s-6, vs er70s-2, vs 7018....same thickness, same output, different process...I always "heard" when I first started out that tig was the "strongest" process...i think it would make a great vid...

    Could you do a video on maybe like, strength test comparison between flux core wire versus using mig/gas wire?
    Also what applications you'd use 025, 030 and 035 wire for and what their limits might be
    Thanks!

    I can testify on breaking those cast iron plates on my 20 ton Harbor Freight press. It liked to have given me hart failure and wet pants. Got some good old steel plates now. Love your videos Jody, they are the best on you tube. I have learned a lot watching them, please keep them coming this 72 year old can't wait for the next one.

    i've found the use of cooking spray helps reduce the sticking of that splattering. and i learned early not to sit beneath the weld wile wearing polyester pants. you'll know why when one small piece of arch splatter lands in your lap. right on the tip of your manhood. have you ever slapped at a fire caused by arching to put out the fire. well when that burn is in your lap. you learn quick to refrain from that.

    Another well put together, informative video. As a novice welder I like that the past few videos have been specific to my particular welder (Lincoln 210MP) as I am just becoming familiar with it. I learn something every week and, as time passes it all starts to sink in. Very good teaching skills Jody. If you have time, can you run some flux core through the 210 on 10 gauge HSS. I don't have a shop and will probably be building my trailer frame outdoors in the breeze. No worries if you can't as I have been practicing and have a feel for it. Just nice to see someone who knows what he is doing so that I can pick up a few extra pointers.

      David,
      TIg or even MIG with gas is best done in a shielded area the slightest breeze can remove the shielding gas from the weld with predicable results.
      Build a breeze proof barrier out of tarps and a few poles to keep the breeze out and you should be good to go.
      Cheers

    I was using CO2 in my Lincoln ProMig 175 and started experiencing porosity. After trouble shooting, I discovered the entire hose/cable assembly had come loose and was pushed out of the machine. I posted pics of the issue on my Instagram and all of the keyboard warriors started telling me the porosity was because I was supposed to be using 75/25, ignoring the fact that the hose was completely outside of the machine.

    I just want to point out that the 210MP has a C100 setting in the setup wizard, this is supposed to use a different table of presets and help you get closer to where you need to be. I had an old CO2 tank from some carbonation I did 10yrs ago, so I've been using CO2 exclusively with the 210MP.

    Thanks for the videos.
    You were talking about having a good ground with mig welding.
    I have a metal table that I weld on and I just noticed that the metal power strip is grounded to my table causing it to be earth grounded with the plug on the power strip.
    Will the earth ground affect my weld? Reason why I’m asking , sometimes after I start a weld about 2-3 seconds into the weld I get a sputter then the welder welds fine. I’m welding with a new Hobart 140.

    Jody, i think welding with CO2 isn't mig, but mag.. Carbon dioxide is a active gas so mag (metal active gas). Correct me if I'm wrong please

    • @davidmarquardt2445
      @davidmarquardt2445 5 років тому

      @Austin Carlson Yes Acetylene is obviously active. But I would call CO2 semi-inert, in that under certain conditions like in a arc the carbon and the oxygen dissociate, and for a fraction of a second recombines as CO (carbon monoxide) it then re-associates withe the oxygen atom to reform CO2. Even C-90 (90%helium,7 1/2% argon, 2 1/2 CO2) which is used for SS MIG is not inert. Only aluminum MIG is truly inert, as it only uses argon or argon/helium mixes and is spray transfer.

  • @xrookie650
    @xrookie650 9 років тому

    Jody, first of all great videos. I enjoy them very much and you clearly know your stuff. Perhaps things have changed but I don't believe there is a documented aws procedure for welding short circuit on anything, much less 3/8". Let's see the difference between this and FCAW. For anything 1/4" and up, IMHO FCAW is the way to go. Short circuit will work but it's not ideal. I'll use it on 1/4" but only if I can remove all the mill scale or put a bevel on it. If not, I steer clear of short circuit on thicker steel.

    • @christophercumbee1576
      @christophercumbee1576 9 років тому

      Jason Antley There are no pre-qualified procedures but you could certainly have a procedure qualified if need be, just have to go through the process.

    what specifically does each gas do in the 75/25 mix, how and why does argon help the weld

    • @dalemyers9265
      @dalemyers9265 9 років тому +2

      jrcll as i've learned. each gas is to force out any oxygen from the area around the weld. now argon promotes electron flow. much as it does in neon lighting. it's used in plasma lighting to create a given color of light versus other plasma gasses. and being it's a good plasma gas it makes for a hotter weld. much like helium does when welding aluminum. hence the welding process heliarch.

      steisje I'm welding with straight CO2 cos its cheap. My regulator gets very cold but hasn't frozen yet, however in another video Jody mentions that using a nylon washer between the regulator and bottle instead of a fibre washer does help prevent freezing.

    • @steisje
      @steisje 7 років тому +2

      Hello. thanks for the reply. I did use a nylon washer, but it still froze up. But I have solved it now. I glued 5x 12v resistors on the back of the regulator. And then covered them in chemical metal. (each resistor got over 160 degrees Fahrenheit before mounting) so now it gets cold but not freezing up anymore. Regards.

    I just bought the Power Mig 210mp on your recommendation and my local welding supply. I am attempting to weld a 5/8 inch bolt 5 inches long to a piece of 1/8th inch thick angle iron. I am using the angle iron as an axle and using the bolt lengthwise in the V of the angle iron with the threads sticking out. Do I set the 210mp with straight co2 for the 1/8th inch angle iron?

    • @EddieTheGrouch
      @EddieTheGrouch 9 років тому +2

      g1moore Good question: Set machine for thinnest piece? In your case the 1/8" settings may be a little cold for the bolt.
      Let's see - 5/8, sounds about right for 8-13 inch dolly wheels. With nut and washers that would leave about 1.5 - 2" for weld. I am guessing here to set the scenario to apply my 2 cents.
      First remove any plating on the bolts and scale from the angle iron. Then I would set welder for about 3/8"(1/4 minimum). Tack weld the 4 corners to keep the bolt aligned with the angle. Start the puddle on the bolt to get the heat into it and wash into the angle iron. Spend more time on the bolt and control the heat into the angle by how long you dwell on that side of the puddle as you go.

    • @Brainmalfuction
      @Brainmalfuction 9 років тому

      Actually you can use a lot of heat in 2 G.
      I've ran spray transfer on 2 G plates its just fine.
      Being that it was open root, he needed the right heat to fill the gap and fuse both sides.
      After the root was in he could have cranked the V up a lot and still have a nice looking weld with better Pen.
      That would have defeated the purpose of the video though.

      Best I found for horizontal with lots of heat and fast rate of deposit is shielded flux core, the slag helps holding the puddle. Never tried spray transfer horizontal though...
