    Hi Jody: I'm a Texas rancher and nobody's ever gonna pay me for my welding. That being said, I am just enough of a welder to understand and really appreciate your clear and helpful advice. We use a lot of scrap oilfield pipe around the ranch for structural stuff, and your 7018 lesson is just what I needed. Also, slick tip on the file!!! Thanks, and greetings from The Republic of Texas!!!

    Ya,Jodi,the file tool,got one similar myself that I made many years ago.Started with an old power hacksaw blade about 2" wide and 14" long.Added a wooden handle and made it so the teeth cut on the pull stroke.All these years it's stayed sharp enough that it can even be used in a pinch to open a root up.

    I've ended up modifying an old power hacksaw blade as my chipper/scraper. I use the saw teeth for exactly the same reason you cut grooves in your file, works wonders.

    Good job jody, well explained each and every video that you have done. It has also helped recently while tig welding an aluminum frame project on 1"x 1" x1/8" 6011 rounded edge square tube.
    Although without %2 lanthanated 3/32 (its on order)and using pure only problem I have had was a balled up electrode trying to get crisp starts unless i keep sharpening them.

    Hi Jody
    I have enjoyed your vids - I now have Phoenix weld rod dryer
    And the right rod does a great job - even in Glendale, AZ we have monsoons and they add moisture to the rod so the dryer does the trick and as you have said the right rod and in the right conditions the peal up is awesome.
    I have friends that have small fridges that have heat in them to dry the rod but from my past I was always told to buy a Phoenix rod dryer so - yea I did
    anyway
    Thanks
    Great Job

    Can you make a video about 6011 down hill ? I've been trying it lately at my high school shop but I keep leaving undercut. My school only provides 6011, 6013, and 7014. So I can't use 7018.

    Hi Jody, thanks for your youtube videos, as a DIY welder I've really learned a lot from them. The Powermig 200MP looks great but it's not available in the UK, do you know if the Speedtec 200C, which is available here, is the same machine? It looks the same.

    Have a question would appreciate the help I have some Half inch plate steel to Weld on to my tractor bucket having a 200 amp inverter welder would using a 7018 1/8" Rod be sufficient for penetration and strength, I have to world half inch plate on to to a 3/16 inch tractor bucket, Will it give me enough penetration on the half inch without burning through the 3/16, I would presume I would have to do multiple passes. Thanks for the help

    I own this powermig I recently tripped the 230 breaker in my warehouse NOT KNOWING it was connected to plug that was meant for my 230 AC tig welder. Now my power mig turns on but automatically shuts off. I hear a loud BUZZ or rattle at the corner of my shop, followed by a shut off of the machine.
    I purchased a new circuit breaker for $7 from Lincoln. It didn't help. Waiting on power switch to be shipped.
    Machine is 8 months old, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

      Abom79 Huge difference in quality, clarity, wetout, and slag removal. Cant believe a major distributor like Airgas doesnt stock the best Lo Hi out there.

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79 9 років тому +4

      That's a whole other subject id rather not get into, but yea, they don't stock a lot. Usually what I want or need they don't have..... But can order it. 😣 I remember once going up there for some nickel rods and all they had was these two rods per package hanging on the shelf. I was like Wtf?? I want a can full of rods dude, not two. "We can order some" 😣
      I want to get some of those Excalibur rods and try. I do a lot of 7018 stick welding.

      Abom79 I feel your pain my friend, I feel your pain. I have to drive 30 miles to the nearest welding shop, and all they stock are off-brands, or "I can order what you need". I have learned to call ahead and hunt up the right store, which is always different, so I can never seem to build a relationship with any one guy or store...

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  9 років тому +1

      Abom79 Adam, I do see a difference for certain jobs and if I set heat just right and dont sneeze, slag peels off easier than some other brands.

    Jody I just got my first arc welder from my father inlaw for free and it's a brand new 110amp cheap buffalo Chinese welder and it's pretty old but I notice that my slag when I go to chip it away it is really hard to get off and doesn't break in big pieces like yours. I'm using 7018 3/32s lincoln rods from home depot. the welds look pretty decent and get good penetration and heat at 80amps for some scrap 1/4 in a36 plate but I'm just curious if this is ok? is it just the series of electrode I'm using?

    I heard somewhere that your supposed to use your slag hammer to put dimples in the weld when your done to release surface tension so the weld does not fracture as it cools down.. ? I have no idea if there's any truth to this but for the times I have to weld I just do it for grins. Is there any truth to this or can I stop making my welds look worse?

  • @allinlen

    Would that be considered to much weld for that thickness pipe?

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  9 років тому +1

      allinlen yep, that would be overwelded because the wall thickness on the pipe is less than 1/4" ...but if the round part was solid, that weld might be about right. I just made the weld big for the video and for the practice.

    My 210 mp works nice with just about any 7018,8018 and 10018.
    However ,it's hard to maintain a proper keyhole during 6011 open root, and it's the worst I've tried in a 6010 open root.
    That being said, it's still one of the most capable little machines, for the 'do it yourself' person, for the money !

    G'day Jodie!
    Why did you have to do so many passes on this?

      Jesus is the man
      "So many" passes provides enough content to edit from, so he can share the amount of information he deems necessary for the video.
      Generally, a weld fillet size is specified in an a WPS provided by the engineers to the weldors. The weldors therefore do the amount of passes required to attain that required fillet size as specified by the WPS.

      Jesus is the man the comment by chopperdan88 was spot on .....I made the weld big for the sake of practice and for
      video editing reasons. His comment on the WPS (welding procedure specification) was spot
      on as well.

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 9 років тому

      If you're ok doing wiring you can get a female plug that fits the welder, then a male plug that fits the outlet along with a short bit of wire to go between them. Wire the male and female together and you can make a short pigtail adaptor for the welder.
