  • This video first shows the warm up. Note that the prosthetic foot is adjusted in the stirrup to make sure it doesn't come out during the race. The damper is set to achieve a drag factor of 116. The start is relatively slow in order not to over stress the good leg. After 10 short strokes the stroke lengthens, and for the first 500 meters the motion is smooth and efficient. Fatigue begins to set in during the second 500, and by the final 200 meters the good leg loses power (note the reduced leg compression). Greater lay back, and arm flexion are required to maintain speed.
Fred Southwick required an above the knee amputation on September 18, 2012. He has rowed his entire life and thanks to Kyra Ketnick, his prosthetists, he now has a free knee prosthesis that allows him to row. These video clips are from the Southern Erg Sprints in Melbourne, Florida, February 1st, 2014. He won his race with a time of 3:53.6 for 1000 meters. His goal next year is to break the world record of 3:45. Only 8 seconds to go!
