The WORST 1st Overall NHL Draft Picks - NHL Draft Busts

These are the worst 1st overall NHL draft picks. 1st overall selections have a lot of pressure to perform, but these picks were NHL draft busts.
Today we are looking at the worst 1st overall NHL Draft picks, featuring the Atlanta Thrashers, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators. Now, it's not just about how much of a bust these draft picks were, but who was drafted after them. These NHL draft picks made it onto this list because of disappointing play and being outperformed by those drafted with later picks. Not everyone here is an NHL draft bust yet, but they are well on their way.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are known for trading away their first-round picks and making bad first-round selections. However, they've never blown it when drafting first overall, but these other teams have. We've beaten up the Leafs recently, but today we will discuss how they won the 2012 draft.
First up is Alexis Lafrenière, the 2020 draft pick for the NY Rangers. While he's not a bust yet, his slow growth and lack of expected production land him on this list. Maybe it's time to rethink automatically playing the 1st overall pick. To make matters worse, Tim Stutzle at #3 is outperforming Lafrenière.
Next is Nail Yakupov, the 2012 draft pick for the Oilers. Yakupov's point production declined despite a promising start, and he eventually returned to the KHL. While picks 1-4 in that draft failed to meet expectations, Morgan Rielly at #5 proved to be a steal for Toronto.
The 1993 draft pick for the Ottawa Senators, Alexandre Daigle, also lands on this list. He had a few solid seasons, but inconsistency and injuries plagued him. To make matters worse, Chris Pronger, Paul Kariya, and other successful players were drafted directly after him.
Finally, Patrik Stefan, the 1999 draft pick for the Atlanta Thrashers, didn't perform well. While the Sedin twins were drafted after him, the '99 draft was disappointing overall.
